Chris Walla on Quitting, Norway, Alcohol, Perfectionism, and Terrible Music Teachers

Chris Walla on Quitting, Norway, Alcohol, Perfectionism, and Terrible Music Teachers

Chris Walla’s life today is very different from where it has been in the past. The musician and producer isn’t in the Pacific Northwest, for instance, where he grew up and lived for many years. He’s in Trondheim, Norway, where he is putting down roots and continues to compose and produce. And while that happens, Death Cab for Cutie, the band he co-founded in the 1990s, is in the midst of a 71-stop international tour.

In this interview, Chris talks about music instructors and academic experiences that didn’t quite kill his love of making music. He weighs the thrill of playing music with his friends to the painful drudgery of touring and the experience of losing connection with the songs. And he details his struggles with depression, alcohol, and, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the nagging feeling that people don’t really want to hear what he makes.

    Good Vibes

    Good Vibes
We have guests! For this episode, Logan and first time guest Becca join the table to discuss the hard hitting issues. Right away there’s a disagreement on the movie elf, Logan is in the wrong on this one. After another edition of ’Things Rich People Do’, they get into another heated debate involving Christmas songs and the best animal. As with all new guests, we ask Becca the tough questions that no one else can answer. We also play a game of ‘Ask a Music Teacher’. This is mostly a nostalgic trip down memory lane with nonsensical rants and good vibes.

Growing Up and Alongside (feat. Ben Gibbard)

Growing Up and Alongside (feat. Ben Gibbard)

“Music is a time machine,” says Ben Gibbard, singer and guitarist of Death Cab for Cutie. Just a few bars of a beloved song can be transportative, an instant reminder of another time and place. “And if you've been that in someone's life, you have a responsibility to keep that material alive.” For Ben, that means continuing to honor and perform work from Death Cab for Cutie’s back catalog—some of which he wrote when he was only twenty years old—while constantly pushing the band to new creative heights. On this episode of Object of Sound, Ben and Hanif talk about what it is like to live alongside the work we produce, and how our relationship to it changes as we grow up. Hanif closes the episode with a playlist of songs about getting older. For the playlist of songs curated for this episode, head over to radio.sonos.com.

Edited in the middle of the English Channel, please forgive any inconsistencies - It was difficult to hear what I was doing as Pierre Le Bear was entertaining the children rather loudly.

It shouldn't spoil the over all listening of what is some great, insightful chat from the boys about, but not exclusively: Billy No Mates, Katie J Pearson, Death Cab for Cutie, Mogwai, Metallica and Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer.

Playing us out today we have The Hiddens, an Alternative/Post-Punk band, based in Guadalajara, Mexico. Currently working on their Debut album at The Oven Recording co. With producers Diego Romero and Eduardo Flores. The Hiddens have been growing their fan base with the singles All The Same (release on March 26, 2021), A beautiful evening (October 1st, 2021) and We Need Some Time ( June 10th, 2022).

Remember Taping Songs Off The Radio? (with Benjamin Gibbard)

Remember Taping Songs Off The Radio? (with Benjamin Gibbard)

Benjamin Gibbard may follow you in the dark, but he will not follow you in the trendy brunch spot in your neighborhood. On this episode on HOW DID WE GET WEIRD?, we catch up with the frontman for Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service to discuss 20 years of random Bayer hangouts ranging from breakfast to Bonnarroo, what being vegan was like during DCFC's early years and why he is unlikely to become the spokesman for Dunkin' Donuts anytime soon. We also discuss taping songs off the radio as a teenager, the enduring influence of Minor Threat and why "ordering something for the table" is the best way to get something indulgent without a side order of guilt.

Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You into the Dark

Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You into the Dark

Hi Folks!  For this bonus episode we listen to and discuss Death Cab for Cutie's song 'I Will Follow You into the Dark".  First appearing on their 2005 album 'Plans' this acoustic solo ballad was well received by fans, even if it didn't do well in the charts.  'I Will Follow You into the Dark' deals a lot with themes of death, anticipation, grief, and thoughts about the afterlife.  We talk about what this song means to us, how the music video helps depict the songs meaning and why this became a staple of medical sitcoms of the early 2000's.  Thanks for listening!

Jordan Kurland (Brilliant Corners Artist Management and Noise Pop Industries)

Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!!  Hop on board for today's interview with the intriguing and uber-successful Jordan Kurland.  Jordan is the co-founder of Brilliant Corners Artist Management and has been helping guide musical careers for decades -- he works with such artists as Death Cab for Cutie, Real Estate, Toro Y Moi, Soccer Mommy and Pup, among others.  But his expertise does not stop there; Jordan is also a partner in Noise Pop Industries which promotes local boutique music festivals.  He's also a writer, an agent for change, and has worked with famed author Dave Eggers on several political initiatives including some mega-fundraising with the Biden campaign in 2020.  But Jordan's work with artists he loves is his most stunning accomplishment; he is a beacon for independent artists and an SF Bay Area industry icon.  His story is one of perseverance, hard work, and a bit of luck mixed in here and there.  Come join us for this informative and intelligent conversation with Jordan Kurland -- it's a great ride!!

There Goes Antifa Gritty (Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service)

Join hosts Gabe Cook, Grant Hutchison and Martyn Goodwin-Sharman as they argue over which one of them is the Cutie, in the Neutral Cider Hotel!

First, Gabe brings his own t-shirts to the hotel, and a cleanly shaved face for his appearance on Sunday Brunch, expect hatred of dog instagram and Martyn cracks his first can of Oliver’s Cider which inspires a superhero story! Then onto this week’s interview...

Our guest today is Ben Gibbard; the frontman of not one but two of indie rock’s most loved bands, Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. The guys chat about everything, from Gritty and his ties to the radical left, catching covid before it was cool, new music and file sharing, touring with Frightened Rabbit, sports, Death Cab The Musical and a mutual love of certain bands!

To honor Ben’s non drinking, the guys cracked a series of alcohol free ciders, including Westons Low Alcohol Cider, Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider, Cairn O’ Mohr Pictish, Hogan’s High Sobriety and Crafty Nectar 0.5. A game to play along, guess which of the guys has the gushing bottle this time around!

Then, onto Listener Questions where the guys are asked by Richey Featherstone about cooking with cider. If you’re lucky, there’ll be at least something you can cook after listening to them drunkenly rant about food!

So thanks for tuning in and checking out Neutral Cider Hotel, leave a voice message at Speakpipe for the guys, or reach them at the socials below!
