Death Note (2017) - Criminally Westernized

Death Note (2017) - Criminally Westernized

    PATREON PARTY PLEASER:

This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard!

Shirleon joins Melvin in summarizing one of the single most hated western adaptions of an anime to date: Death Note from Adam Wingard! From sporadic over-the-top violence to an extremely emotional protagonist, Death Note was a Hollywood picture a long-time coming, and while it's soured as a classic example of Netflix' early foibles, we're ready to find out what it is that really separates Death Note from it's anime counterpart.

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 33-minutes of Melvin asking Shirleon what 15-different fictional and non-fictional characters would do if they received the death note, from Dr. Who to John Snow, and how they would be stopped from killing more people. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • A Hollywood adaption of the Death Note story has been shopped around for nearly a decade by the time Netflix got its hands on the project.
    • It doesn't take long before Shirleon and Melvin start to notice a series of issues with Death Note (2017).
    • Discussing the characteristic disparity between Light Turner and Light Yagami.
    • As The Ring is to Ringu, so to is Death Note (2017) to Death Note (2006). Everything is overly Americanized, including the tone.
    • The very second L is introduced is when the movie begins to go completely downhill. It gets embarrassing.
    • Discussing how the third act makes literally no sense if you spend even a second thinking about it.

    #246: The Perfect Anime Tape
We start off the episode with an announcement before going into the topic. Plucked directly from our discord, we are going to blend different pieces of various anime to form THE PERFECT ANIME. This is one of those creative juices thinky tapes where we get creative.

Pretty much, we take a step back and decide what character archetypes, storylines, power scaling, and other aspects of anime can be molded together to form a banger of a show. First we take turns picking these to create our own, and then at the end we sort which anime's top tier ingredients could be mixed together and produce some fire.

Let us know if you like these types of episodes. Also make sure you're tuned into our YouTube next week...

This episode includes: Dragon Ball, DBZ, Naruto, JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen, AOT, Attack on Titan, Death Note, Dr. Stone, Demon Slayer, Cowboy Bebop, One Piece

#241: The Final Attack on Titan Tape

Today we react to this masterpiece of a show, and really see if the ending was as bad as *everyone* made it out to be! From the protagonist, to the antihero, Eren Yaegar took us for one heck of a ride.

During this episode, we dissect the choices made by Isayama and his how he attempts to shape the opinions of his audience when it comes to the Yaegarmeister. We react to the ending credits and everything it alluded to. And lastly, we see if Attack On Titan delivered an ending as powerful as the rest of the series.

#239: The Perfect Horror Series Tape

#239: The Perfect Horror Series Tape

Okay this by far the most abstract episode we have done in years. Absolutely giving Shonen Tapes 2021 vibes. We basically were thinking what would make a good horror series, but instead of doing the usual "what do you" like and "what don't you like" type questions, we ventured into our creative sides and both created a spooky series for spooky season from scratch.

Basically, we grabbed characters from different shows, changed their relationships, and tried to see who could make the more captivating series. Have to warn you - this whole episode felt like a riff, but it was very funny, and fun to do. Let us know if you like these types of episodes and we'll absolutely do more.

This episode Includes: Dragon Ball, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, My Hero Academia, Pokemon, Attack on Titan, Death Note, Sailor Moon, Blue Lock, Ranking of Kings

#235: The One Piece Live Action Tape

#235: The One Piece Live Action Tape

We decided to see what all the hype was about with the Netflix's Live Action One Piece, and it made for a very back and forth episode. Ultimately, the discussion is around a few things...First, if it lived up to the Anime. Secondly, if it broke the traditional of horrible live action remakes. We really dissect every character and story plot point in today's episode. It ultimately comes down to how knit picky we want to be, and if we like the liberties that the show makers took.

How were ya'll liking this remake? Rate it out of 7 thumbs please.

    #234: The Power Scaling Tape

    #234: The Power Scaling Tape

HUuuuahhhhhghHHGHHHHATHHHHH!!!! Welcome to the power scaling tape. Obviously we're going to talk a lot about Dragon Ball, but also how other shows have handled their power scaling, and which ones go about it the best.

Some shows are balanced, like Attack on Titan, while other shows (like Naruto), we have completely different opinions on when it comes to the power scaling.

This episode is about us talking about if writers of Anime shoot themselves in the foot by making their protagonists too powerful, and having trouble finding realistic threats to further the story. We also discuss what type of power scaling we prefer, and which shows do it better.

    What do you think?

The Destroyer Series and Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)

In this thrilling episode, our hosts dive deep into a captivating mix of crime, suspense, and action. They start by analyzing the gripping psychological drama and haunting atmosphere of The Alienist,  they delve into the intense cat-and-mouse battle between geniuses Light Yagami and L Lawliet in Death Note, they survey the oddly barren world of The Last of Us, they infiltrate the espionage-infused adventures of The Grey Man and the muscle-bound heroics of Reacher, and finally, they start their Sinanju training with Master Chiun in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins and The Destroyer pulp fiction novel series. With a blend of analysis, enthusiasm, and Googling stuff, our hosts produce an episode that just may be... a perfect accident.
