amoa Air has become the first airline to charge passengers according to how much they weigh. The company carries travelers on hops between Pacific islands that have some of the highest obesity rates in the world. Instead of charging for each seat, Samoa Air has started weighing passengers along with their luggage, and charging them a fee reflecting the total, depending on the length of the flight. Fees range from about $1 to $4 per kilo (2.2 pounds), meaning passengers pay a little under $50 to $200 per 100 lbs. "This is the fairest way of traveling," Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton says. "There are no extra fees in terms of excess baggage or anything.

First Lady Michelle Obama is reportedly being counted among the victims in a string of recent high-profile personal security breaches.
TMZ first reported that upwards of 12 celebrities and political figures -- like Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Ashton Kutcher and Paris Hilton -- had been hacked. Financial and personal information, including social security numbers, bank accounts, mortgage information and credit card details, were "doxxed" (posted online) to the website Exposed.su by a group of Russian hackers.

Airline Fees Soar, Cost Travelers Billions in fees

Airline Fees Soar, Cost Travelers Billions in fees
SPECIAL GUEST CO-HOST ROBIN.  Airline fees are hard to escape, but its not like we don't try. Many travelers today have adapted to a world of baggage fees, service fees and in-flight fees, accepting them as part of the deal. Others avoid fees when they can by carrying on luggage rather than checking it or avoiding in person/over-the-phone fees by making changes on line. But even those savvy travelers can't seem to stay ahead of the game, and for good reason. AÂ

You might want to think twice before whipping out your credit card. As of Sunday, stores in most states could start charging you a "checkout fee" when you pay for something with plastic. The new fees stem from a multi-billion dollar settlement announced in July between credit card issuers and millions of merchants.

At least that's how Tim Austin, founder of the National Association of College Funding Advisors, characterized parents of college-bound kids in a conference call last year to recruit new members to join his group -- which, despite its name, is actually an insurance marketing organization. (MONEY signed up for and attended the session.)
In a follow-up e-mail, Austin's NACFA associate Brian Kay urged prospective members not to miss out on "this obscenely profitable niche." And they aren't the only insurance pros positively giddy about the potential of the college market.

CTUSA - 10 things consumers will pay more for in 2013
In 2013, it will pay to be a vegetarian.
From hamburgers to bacon, most of Americans' favorite meat products are expected to cost between 3% and 4% more this year, according to a December 2012 forecast by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The higher meat prices are linked to the historic drought that struck much of America's farmlands this year, causing the price of corn -- a common ingredient in animal feed -- to skyrocket.

What did you spend for Christmas in 2012 - FINAL SHOW 2012
    Sponor Ticket Finders
Among the throngs of Americans prowling the malls and trawling ?e-commerce sites, it turns out that many Christmas shoppers are looking out for themselves. Retail-research firm NPD Group in mid-December said that, thus far, about one third of consumers have engaged in what is euphemistically called self-gifting. That’s up from 12 percent in a typical pre-recession year, and up from the 19 percent who said they planned to do so last year. The National Retail Federation, the dispenser of all holiday-related data, said that in 2012, nearly 60 percent of shoppers would engage in the practice.

If Congress fails to act the stakes are HIGH on fiscal cliff

If Congress fails to act the stakes are HIGH on fiscal cliff
    SPONOR: TICKET FINDERS.
If Congress fails to act, income taxes will go up for millions of middle-class families when the new year begins.
The National Economic Council and Council of Economic Advisers estimates consumer spending would fall by $200 billion nationwide next year. Retailers from big chains to mom-and-pop small businesses would be affected—which is why even the CEO's of Walmart and Costco have called for a balanced approach that protects the middle-class.
Asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share is an essential component of the President's plan for balanced deficit reduction. The Senate already passed this bill and the President is ready to sign it as soon as the House takes action.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are in spotlight for BIG BONUSES

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are in spotlight for BIG BONUSES
    Sponsor: American Negotiators
A report released Monday by a government watchdog reveals the top 90 employees, excluding the CEOs, received an impressive $92 million in pay last year at Fannie and Freddie -- companies that are propped by taxpayer money.
The median paycheck of the top 23 executives at Fannie and Freddie totaled $1.72 million in 2011, a 9% decline from the previous year. The next 62 executives took home $723,000, a decline of 5%. Even high-ranked federal government employees don't make close to these numbers, which are more comparable to top salaries in the private sector.
Executive compensation for Fannie and Freddie has fallen under heightened scrutiny after the two companies lost billions of dollars when the housing bubble burst. Both companies were the largest buyers of home mortgage loans in the U.S. and have been criticized for lax standards during the housing boom. Their losses were borne by taxpayers when the companies were taken over by the government in September 2008.
