11 - Your Rights with Collection Agencies

11 - Your Rights with Collection Agencies

Many Canadians are juggling their finances - trying to keep all their payments current. But if you have become delinquent on any of those credit accounts -  that debt may wind up in collections. This means your original lender has sent your account to a collection agency who will contact you repeatedly in an effort to see the debt paid. But what are your rights?  Here’s an opportunity to find out what creditors and collection agencies can and can’t do. In today’s podcast Licensed Insolvency Trustee, Mark Marshall from Allan Marshall & Associates delves into this topic.

Find out the best way to deal with collection calls, when and where collection agencies can contact you and how to correspond with them.  A few of the topics covered in this episode are:

    • How and when creditors are allowed to contact you
    • Things you can do to get them to stop
    • Informal and formal proposals to clear your debt
    • What to do when the contact turns into harassment.

Licensed Insolvency Trustees (LIT) are federally regulated and approved by the Canadian government. They are the only professionals that can administer formal proposals such as a Consumer Proposal or Bankruptcy. An LIT can also help you prepare an informal proposal to settle the debt on your own.

The criteria for this list was that the film needed to be a martial arts film released since the year 2000, and the fight scene needed to be a “person to person” fight. Fight scenes with multiple opponents were excluded. Here are our Best One-on-One fight scenes of the 21st Century, so far. Can you guess which films we chose? Debt Collectors (2020) Movie Review

    Debt Collectors (2020) Movie Review

Debt Collectors (2020) is bloody good fun. This sequel to the 2018’s The Debt Collector, picks up shortly after the explosive end of the original film. A nearly healed French and Sue are reunited for a few final debt collections for their old boss, Tommy, (Vladimir Kulich skillfully reprising the role), as a payback for saving their lives. In the tradition of its predecessor, the duo’s journey to Las Vegas and back to Los Angeles is fraught with obstacles and adversity as vehicles for the film’s bone-crushing action sequences. As the story unfolds we learn that these jobs are more than they appear to be, and have a dangerous connection to their deceased nemesis, Barbosa.

Debt Collectors defies the typical notion that “buddy films” have to be formulaic to be successful. Furthermore, it defies the convention that sequels are rarely as good, or even better than, their predecessors. Debt Collectors is fun, explosive, well-scripted, and well directed movie in its own right. As a stand alone it equals, or surpasses The Debt Collector, as a film. Jesse V. Johnson, together with Scott Adkins, have carved out a niche’ as filmmakers that have elevated the action film from a genre where the script and dialogue are ancillary. Their films elevate the elements that support the action and fight choreography as holistic and indistinguishable elements of a great film.

In this episode Marc Zirogiannis discusses The Debt Collector Series and reviews this action film.

Debt Collectors hits DVD and streaming services on May 29th. I highly recommend it. In fact, during this time when people are consuming more video content, I recommend you make a double-feature of it. Watch these two films back-to-back. They are worth the investment of your time.
