Today we hear a Combat Story from the very tip of the spear from “Dutch” Chris Moyer, a long-time special operator who spent 14 years in Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in addition to years at 1/75 Ranger Battalion, and CIA’s Global Response Staff (GRS).

Dutch walks us through a very open and honest approach to what it’s like operating in the elite ranks for so long, including the pressure, brotherhood, and chaos. He doesn’t shy away from sharing where he felt he fell short, and how, even after decades of service he still felt like he had more to give.

He saw combat in multiple theaters in the pre-and post-9/11 era, fighting at the same time as and friends with many of the former Tier 1 operators we’ve heard on this show.

Be sure to stick through to the end where we hear Dutch describe his own “Mr. Goodbar” story (if you don’t know about Mr. Goodbar, check out Episode 30) where Dutch ends up in a room one on one having to fight none other than John “Shrek” McPhee (from Episode 25 https://youtu.be/6hvQj06fQUQ).

It’s hilarious. Dutch now runs DCM Consulting where he teaches military, government, and civilians how to apply the skills he learned in the Tier 1 community from shooting to CQB to leadership.

In fact, when I reached out to Dutch I had to leave him a message and his voicemail was one of the best I’ve ever heard and said something like “You’ve reached Dutch, I can’t take your call because I’m out on the range shooting, teaching CQB, or doing some other cool shit right now…”

Moyer served 31 years in the Army – 26 of those in Special Operations.

He has taken part in over 1,000 successful combat assaults in classified & unclassified missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He found that the Army in the 1980s was not what he had hoped. After a five-year break, he returned. This time he “Wanted to be in the worst possible places with the best possible people.”

This show, as always, was a true honour to create.Originally planned to be Pat McNamara of Delta Force, Joe Hotai of Australian SAS and Clint Emerson of Seal Team 6 and CIA, Clint couldn't make it due to a book launch commitment for " The Rugged Life".

SO as always with Special Forces types, we pushed on and achieved the mission objective ( Sorry Clint) and it turned out to be an amazing show.

We spoke about how Special Forces skills  can carry over to everyday life and self defence.

The differences and similarities between the units they have all worked for, and worked alongside.

Pat served with the US Green Berets, Served in the Cold War in Berlin and Soviet Germany and then on to 12 yrs in Delta Force and finished the Sergeants Major Academy.



Joe served in the NZ Army, Passed NZSAS Selection and Cycle of training. He then served with 4 RAR Commandos and went on to pass Australian SAS  Selection and served with them for 5 yrs.

They speak with such wisdom and humility and I am sure you will be surprised at their openness.

Watch out for the middle of. the show where I may be the only person who has stumped Pat with a question!! It is hilarious.

A watershed event in the history of US Special Operations was the 1979 hostage rescue attempt at the embassy in Tehran, Iran. Known as Operations Eagle Claw, this failed mission and the tragedy at the Desert One landing site led to the formation of US SOCOM and pushed special operations into the next generation. The best way we can honor the hostages who remained in captivity and the service members who lost their lives is to draw some lessons learned and acknowledge their sacrifice for having "The Guts To Try."

Chili Palmer (his nickname) was one of the military advisors for the hit Netflix film “Extraction” starring Chris Hemsworth. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I have to say why not? If you are into excellent action movies with fantastic gunplay, then “Extraction” is for you. Too often Hollywood gets it wrong with things like taking the safety off a Glock or holding a pistol with a crazy grip. What about non-existent reloads?

All of this can take people in the know (like the folks of the Firearms Nation) out of the movie and walking away with a big thumbs down. Well, the producers of “Avenger’s Endgame” and “Captain America: Civil War” got it right. They hired Chili Palmer.

Chili was not the only advisor on the film but his contributions made the climax of the film stand out as one of the best action sequences in a long time. Watch it you’ll see what I mean.

The movie “Extraction” came out last weekend and after watching it, I reached out to Chili who graciously accepted to come on and share some of his experiences and participating on the set.

Chili served in the Army for 25 years and had over 13 deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. His first mission was the historic raid in Panama taking in the corrupt Manuel Noriega into custody. Chili served in the Unit alongside Kyle Lamb, who happened to be on last week’s episode and is an instructor for Viking Tactics as well.

Kyle Lamb is a former Army veteran who served the majority of time in Special Operations, and in the Unit (SOFD-D Delta Force). Most people just say “The Unit”. During that time he served in Iraq, Bosnia, and fought in the Battle of Mogadishu.

Once he left the military, Kyle starting teaching firearms instruction and also formed his gear company, Viking Tactics. Kyle has also written several shooting books and a book on leadership called “Leadership in the Shadows” (which he narrates the audiobook version). Kyle also has a very successful podcast, “Team VTAC Podcast” where he interviews other gun industry people and covers historical events.

• Lt. Gen. Boykin's amazing military experiences as well as his work supporting faith, family and freedom at the Family Research Council
• It's a mistake to say God is in control because we're saying we're not going to do anything.  God has the ultimate say but He works through us
• "There's so much evil in our country today and in the world today that somebody has to stand up to it.  Psalm 94 says 'Who will take a stand against this evil for me, who will stand up to these doers of iniquity?' That's talking to us."
• The warrior says "No, I've got something that I'm fighting for".  A statement from WWII says "The soldier does not fight because he hates the enemy in front of him, he fights because he loves what's behind him".  We fight because we love our family, our country, our faith.  We have an obligation to get in the battle.
• The Pharisees in the Bible prayed so others could hear them.  We should pray from our heart, and God understands what's in your heart.  The words don't really matter.

• After being shot in Grenada, the doctors said they needed to remove his arm, but he said they needed to think about plan B, and that God was going to heal him.
• During the Black Hawk Down events, the nurse told him the injured doctor next to him was dead, but Boykin kept praying and that doctor is now alive and well in Virginia and a Sunday School teacher, which is the basis for Boykin's book "Never Surrender".  "As long as you can pray, God can move...you just have to do what God's called you to do, and He'll do the rest"
• "As Christians and Americans we have a responsibility to do the best we can, and we've honored God and we've set an example in some way.  To me that's excellence"
• His life verse is Jeremiah 33:3 "Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things".
• Suggestions for listening on your commute include John Maxwell leadership teaching and the Bible in various translations.
• Final thoughts: "Right now is a time when we as Christians need to be deeply involved in the political process...we need to vote, we need to get other people registered and encourage them to vote...for those who are called we need to run for office.  The most important office in your town is the school board.  The second most important is the city council...Don't tell me that you think the church should stay out of politics, I think that's one of the most damaging and misguided statements."
