DETECTIVE COMICS #38: First Appearance of Robin the Boy Wonder!

DETECTIVE COMICS #38: First Appearance of Robin the Boy Wonder!

The Dynamic Duo is born... and right off the bat there's something a little odd about their relationship. Now, we're not taking Wertham's side on this one but it is really strange for a rich guy to simply abscond with a recently orphaned little boy.

It's Detective Comics #38, the first appearance of Robin the Boy Wonder, the multi-murdering sidekick to the Dark Knight Detective. And there are backup stories galore, a few of which contain racism!

Before that: the news! The Fantastic Four are cast. Should the movie open in such close proximity to Superman: Legacy? Or can movie theaters support both films?

Interview: Rick Remender - NAPALM LULLABY #1 (on-sale 3/13) Art by Bengal

    1. Rick, thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast. To start, Napalm Lullaby…what a killer title. How did you come up with it?
    2. This series plays around with theocracy and societal decay, what made these themes important for this series?
    3. You and Bengal have worked together before, what made them right for this project?
    4. While this is a sci-fi story with some incredible world building going on, it also opens with a flashback that features an origin that has a familiar ring to a certain superhero. Is this where the bud of the story germinated for you?
    5. There’s some high-tech sci-fi stuff going on in Napalm Lullaby, do you ever craft future tech with the thought this could be our future, or is it about achieving something in the story more than anything?
    6. There are some sexual scenes in the first issue, which reminded me of the UCLA report saying Gen Z wants less sex in TV and movies, and comics tend to lack them, where do you stand when it comes to sexual themes in their comics?
    7. I understand you just signed a 3-year deal with Image and your company Giant Generator. Aside from say, number of titles released, is there a goal you’re trying to reach by the end of the 3 years, or a credo you follow with each project?

    1. Thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast, to start, when did you guys get the call, aka conscripted to join the Duke project?
    2. Did you get to put your own take on it, completely free, or was there a starting point given by Robert Kirkman or Hasbro?
    3. As someone who loved the toys but only remembers the cartoon lessons that ended episodes I have to say this first issue is exciting. A thriller, what made you take this angle on Duke?
    4. Tom, there’s a lot on your plate, from recreating classic vehicles to possibly updating costumes and looks. What has been the most fun to take on?
    5. Probably an impossible question, but did you have a favorite GI Joe growing up?
    6. There’s a definitive color story going on here via Jordie Bellaire, the crips oranges lend a certain feel. What is the team going for with how this book is colored?
    7. The GI Joe haters might say, “this property is just a bunch of human soldiers without powers running around.” What do you say to them?
    8. It’s well known at this point the Decepticons will be acquiring energy via Cobra, or in some capacity that is what’s going on. It’s early yet, but how do you integrate a multi-story robot into a gritty espionage story like Duke?

DETECTIVE COMICS #27: The First Appearance of Batman!

DETECTIVE COMICS #27: The First Appearance of Batman!

Welcome to the debut of Batman... or should we say, The Bat-Man. In Detective Comics #27 Bob Kane and Bill Finger introduced a character who would impact the pop culture of the 20th century in ways nobody could have guessed. Hell, reading this entire comic book it becomes clear nobody would have guessed this stuff would still be around in ten years, let alone 80+ years later.

We attempted to read all of Detective Comics #27, but the length and the general crumminess stymied us! Still, reading some of the other stories helped give some interesting context for just how samey and yet how different Batman is in comparison to these other detectives.

Also: what the hell is wrong with the movies? We go on a long digression and kind of an argument about the way that franchises - especially action franchises - have disappointed at the box office this year. Are we on the cusp of an inflection?
