    Supercomputing: An exascale-sized challenge?

    Supercomputing: An exascale-sized challenge?

Supercomputers are big, they're noisy, and they use more energy than a small town. They don't look like much from the outside, but the inside tells a different story! Supercomputers are helping us solve some of the world's biggest problems, and they could be coming soon to a desktop near you...

Today, host Michael Bird goes down the rabbit hole of high-performance computing. We talk parallel processing, exascale and the democratisation of HPC with Bill Mannel, HPE. 5G: Do you want that slice to go?

5G: Do you want that slice to go?

Super-fast data transfer, ultra low latency, and high bandwidth don't seem to justify the astronomical cost of implementing 5G, especially when consumers aren't willing to pay for it!

Single use cases, exciting as they may be, don't justify the means. But could 5G as an enabler of other tech be the real value we're seeking?

Today, in part two of our 5G extravaganza, host Michael Bird is joined by HPE Chief Technologists Chris Dando and Matt Armstrong-Barnes. We discover what happens when testbeds and trials go big with 5G RuralDorset, Hewlett Packard Labs' Puneet Sharma offers up a slice of networking futurism, and Nokia's Leslie Shannon explains why our 5G devices are getting edgier by the second.

5G: Build it, but will they come?

5G: Build it, but will they come?

5G has got a bit of marketing problem. Depending on who you ask, it's either a revolution happening in the telecommunications space or a load of hot air!

Networking kit has never been so divisive, whether it's fear-mongering vandals tearing down cell towers, rumours about governmental espionage, or skepticism about the astronomical costs of implementation. So, is 5G worth the hassle?

Today, host Michael Bird is joined by HPE Chief Technologists Chris Dando, a fervent 5G evangelist, and skeptic Matt Armstrong-Barnes. We discover the true value of super-fast data transfer from New York Times Creative Technologist Jimmy Chion. Plus, Nokia's Leslie Shannon drops some truth bombs about the real potential of those much-maligned millimetre waves.

Hyperconverged: Does one size fit all?

Hyperconverged: Does one size fit all?

Of all the buzzwords bandied about, hyperconverged infrastructure (or HCI) is quite possibly the buzziest of them all. Why? Because it’s revolutionary.

Hyperconverged Infrastructure is working towards the challenges IT departments are facing now, and in the future, that involve massive amounts of data and the need for agility, stability and speed.

But where has HCI evolved from? What has stood in its place for the past half century? And why might HCI be the right solution for every organisation?

With the help of Luke Peters, Matt Harris, Bageshri Kundu and Chris Middleton (Head of IT Infrastructure Operations at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing), host Michael Bird attempts to untangle the hyperconverged story.

Episode #44: Lying, Intent, and Memetic Warfare

Episode #44: Lying, Intent, and Memetic Warfare

In this episode, Josh and Ian discuss the political implications and cultural uses of lying. They begin by talking about the increasing digitization of people's private information, and how the internet necessarily conceals intent by both governments and corporations. Then they move into discuss the issues of trust, deceit, and political narratives in the ongoing spread of memetic warfare, and unpack an example of a political meme at length.

After the break, Josh and Ian discuss the definitions of lying, and how the intent behind lies is used and what it reveals about the psychology of people doing the lying. They talk about how hyperbole has extended into the realm of mainstream media and the office of the Presidency and taken as truth; the intent to change the world in their image by our elected politicians; the tragedy of Mitt Romney; how the modern Democratic Party have morphed into a party of progressivism and aligned toward minority voters; and how intent in relationships form stronger bonds between people.

The digitization of mental health with Moises Silva

The digitization of mental health with Moises Silva

How is digitization affecting mental health and therapy?

Learn what our psychologist Moises Silva has experienced working with the digital tools of mental health, like chat, skype sessions, and also how he sees the THA interviews fit in the mix. Moises has worked with mental health in Kenya, Norway, Portugal and Brazil, and his curiosity has given him the opportunity to try new tools. Hear his thoughts on the difference between chat, video sessions and face-to-face therapy, and what he sees as the pros and cons with the different methods. Also in which stage he sees the methods could have the most positive effect on us, and what challenges they offer for a professional. Today he is working on the professional description and guidelines for all the THA interviews for the professional platform coming soon, with his professional team. In this episode he shares what this work has taught him and what impact he feels the interviews could give when incorporated in therapy. Jimmy and Moises also discuss what impact this could have on the fact that only between 20-40 % of the people who face a mental health illness seek professional help (WHO). Dive into the future of mental health, but also learn how you could apply what is available out there today in your life, both as a professional, but also if you want to try to tackle your life challenge today.
