Episode 131 - You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

Episode 131 - You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

Is it a genuine compliment, an end-of-the-night lament, or simply a pick up line? AJ and Johnny will try to solve this question when "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" goes under the Same Difference microscope. Join us as we listen to and discuss versions by Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra and June Hutton, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Jim Hall and Paul Desmond, and new-to-us artist Danny Jonokuchi and the Revisionists.

Episode 12 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 12 - 'Got You Guessing?'

Episode 12 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 12 - 'Got You Guessing?'

On this week's episode we look into Chapter 12, and see the Eddy Hair Show in all its technicolour glory. We discuss the function of the Eddy Hair show within the narrative and the positioning of Eddy Hair as the anti-Headmaster, we also talk about the function of children's television, the treatment of adults within the media property we're seeing and the show within the show. And stick around at the end for 9 minutes of un-edited pre-podcast chat, covering absurdism, Beckett and copyright, it's a wild ride. Got You Guessing? That's the way I like it.

Episode 11 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 11 - Dinah The Spy

Episode 11 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 11 - Dinah The Spy

On today's episode of Look Into My Eyes we look at Chapter 11 - Dinah The Spy, sadly not Dinah following in the footsteps of her secret agent father (all fan-fiction gratefully recieved) but the story of Dinah's ill-fated attempt to take a recording device into assembly. We discuss the way tension is built up over the course of chapter, Dinah's reaction to the events of the assembly and also the cliffhanger this chapter leaves us on to take us into the book's final third. We also take a brief tangent into Rosemary's food opinions on cheese flan. All this and more on this week's episode of Look Into My Eyes!

    Episode 10 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 10 - SPLAT

    Episode 10 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 10 - SPLAT

In this episode of Look Into My Eyes we consider Chapter 10, our first introduction to the organisation and members of SPLAT. In this iconic chapter we consider each character's introduction in turn, consider the subtle change of perspective that occurs throughout the chapter as we shift from a neutral perspective into Lloyd's and we start to consider some of the lineage of the different versions of the Demon Headmaster and how that affects the presentation in this chapter. All this and more on this week's episode of Look Into My Eyes.

    Episode 7 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 7 - The Punishment

Content Warning: In our discussions we do talk about some topics that some listeners may like to skip, this mostly contained within the first 30 minutes so feel free to skip that if you'd like to. More details in the recording.

On this episode of Look Into My Eyes we discuss Chapter 7: The Punishment. This discussion is largely chronological through the Chapter, dealing with the punishment, it's aftermath and then the discussion with Mrs Hunter at the end of the chapter. We also branch out into other discussions about the nature of discipline in schools, Mrs. Hunter's history with complaining and Jonathan relives his poor memories of GCSE English.

    Episode 6 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 6 - Snow

    Episode 6 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 6 - Snow

Let it Snow, Let It Snow, Let Is Snow, sadly not a cheery Christmas tune, but in fact the title of Chapter 6 of the Demon Headmaster. In this episode we discuss three main topics, including Dinah's discussion with herself and what that reveals about her character. What the process of learning shows us now we've seen it end to end and what Lloyd's reaction to Harvey in the snow scene itself says about their relationship. We also discuss politics briefly and Jonathan attempts to be an orator. Come and hear all this and more on this week's episode of Look Into My Eyes.

    Episode 5 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 5 - Assembly - Keep Out

    Episode 5 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 5 - Assembly - Keep Out

In this episode of Look Into My Eyes we focus on Chapter 5, Assembly - Keep Out, where talk not only about educational theory and further expound on our love of Harvey but also consider questions like:

    • How independent are the prefects?
    • What kind of curriculum is the author satirising?
    • How disturbing is it that at times it's hard to tell if it's Dinah or The Headmaster speaking through her?

Answers to these questions and much more besides, including Rosemary's expasperation with her cat, are all on this week's episode of Look Into My Eyes.

Episode 4 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 4 - The Best School I've Ever Been To

Episode 4 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 4 - The Best School I've Ever Been To

In this episode we consider Chapter 4, The Best School I've Ever Been To, which features our first introduction to SPLAT and our first look at Assembly. We consider questions like, how involved are all the other members of staff in the school? How creepy is the idea of 200 children, eating completely in sync with each other? And how is the Headmaster's attempt to hypnotise Dinah a subtle criticism of an education system that favours teaching to the test? Find out on this week's episode of Look Into My Eyes.

    Episode 3 | The Demon Headmaster - Chapter 3 - The Headmaster

In this episode we cover Chapter 3, and have our first interaction to our bespectacled antagonist. We also discuss Dinah's first interaction with prefects, the collective loss of individuality the school presents and break down exactly how the horror is communicated in the scenes in the playground.

In this episode we discuss the first chapter of the Demon Headmaster, A Girl In The House. We start off with some context as this is the first chapter of a new book and then go on to discuss a variety of topics including:

    • Why is Miss Wilberforce so obsessed with normality?
    • Why is Dinah described as stiff and wooden until she's on her own?
    • The relationship between Lloyd and Harvey

Dinah and Shechem - The Book of Genesis

Dinah and Shechem - The Book of Genesis

In this Bible Story, Jacob’s daughter Dinah is taken advantage of and her brothers, Simeon and Levi, respond. They kill every man in the city, and pillaged all they had. Then Jacob flees back to Bethel and settles there with his family. This story is inspired by Genesis 34-35. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Genesis 34:11 from the King James Version.

Episode 24: As Israel and his family were living in the land of Hamor, a prince of that land named Schechem raped Dinah, Israel’s daughter. However, instead of sending her away in secret, Schechem asks for his father to strike a deal so that he might have her as a wife. An agreement was made to give him Dinah for the price of Hamor, Schechem, and all the men in their city being circumcised. But Dinah’s brothers, Simeon and Levi, would not hear of it. Filled with rage, they attacked while the city's men were recovering, killing them all.
