Our Perception Of Time Shapes The Way We Think About Climate Change

Our Perception Of Time Shapes The Way We Think About Climate Change
Most people are focused on the present: today, tomorrow, maybe next year. Fixing your flat tire is more pressing than figuring out if you should buy an electric car. Living by the beach is a lot more fun than figuring out when your house might be flooded by rising sea levels.

That basic human relationship with time makes climate change a tricky problem.

Host Emily Kwong talks to climate correspondent Rebecca Hersher about how our obsession with the present can be harnessed to tackle our biggest climate problems.

Surviving the trauma of war in Ukraine, with Laura Murray, PhD

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, more than 4 million Ukrainians have had to flee the country as refugees, more than 6 million others have been internally displaced, and tens of millions more have lived through shelling and other traumas. Laura Murray, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, talks about mental health care during war and other disasters, what providers in Ukraine are experiencing on the ground, and what we know about the mental health effects of living through war.

FEMA Has An Equity Problem, Part Two: Race
FEMA acknowledges that the way it distributes aid often benefits some people more than others--and those who receive less aid are those people with the fewest resources to begin with. Rhitu Chatterjee talks with NPR climate correspondent Rebecca Hersher about her investigation into FEMA and why the federal government's response to disasters may disproportionately hurt people of color and their communities.

    Why Australia Is Burning

    Why Australia Is Burning

Wildfires are devastating Australia, incinerating an area roughly the size of West Virginia and killing 24 people and as many as half a billion animals. Today, we look at the human and environmental costs of the disaster, its connection to climate change and why so many Australians are frustrated by Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s response.

Guest: Livia Albeck-Ripka, a reporter for The Times in Melbourne a reporter for The Times in Melbourne who spoke with Susan Pulis, a woman who fled the fires with kangaroos and koalas in her car. For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily.

    Background reading:

    • After Australia’s hottest and driest year on record, Mr. Morrison has minimized the connection between the wildfire crisis and climate change and declined to make moves to curb the country’s carbon emissions.
    • Many Australians entered the new year under apocalyptic blood-red skies as smoke from the fires choked the country’s southeastern coast. “I look outside and it’s like the end of the world. Armageddon is here,” one woman in Canberra said.
    • The fires have burned through dozens of towns, destroying at least 3,000 homes. Now, unbridled by continuous fire fighting, the blazes have returned to some scorched areas to level what is left.
    • Rupert Murdoch controls the largest news company in Australia, and his newspapers have contributed to a wave of misinformation about the cause of the fires.

Ep. 806 New Rules: We’re Not Taking Your Garbage Any More
Summary: In this episode I address the disgusting efforts by media conspiracy theorists and swamp rats to blame the tragic deaths of many, after Hurricane Maria, on President Trump. I also address the tech companies and their war on conservatives along with their potential election interference. Finally, I discuss the ridiculous claims that Obama handed Trump a strong economy.    News Picks: Do illegal aliens really commit fewer crimes than native-born Americans?   New Strzok texts reveal a plot to “leak like mad” from the intelligence community.    Will George Papadopoulos testify before Congress?    This Washington Examiner piece exposes Adam Schiff‘s new plan to target Donald Trump.    Twitter rejected an ad for using the term “illegal alien.”    This NY Post piece addresses the absurd notion that Obama handed Trump a strong economy.    New updates in the House IT scandal case.    Copyright CRTV.
