How aligned in your small groups ministry with the rest of your staff? Many in ministry struggle with "buy-in" from senior leadership. But James Browning takes a fairly deep dive into the idea that small group point people would benefit from buying into other ministries in their church. In particular we look at the role of church communication leaders and how to align small groups ministry with church comms.

Our guest on this episode is Shawn Gendall.

Shawn was born and raised on the Canadian plains, but – following a few years in Arizona – met and married Kelly, a Los Angeles native. Shawn and Kelly have served in student and family ministries for 18 years, all on the Westside. They are grateful parents to Delaney (’03), Caden (’06), and Peyton (’08). The Gendalls typically spend their free time on the bike paths and in the basketball gyms of this beautiful city.

Shawn holds a Master of Divinity from Denver Seminary and is currently completing his Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Leadership.

We get to have a conversation about being a disciple making church with James Gleason. We talk about how it is important for the pastor to be investing personally in disciple making if he is going to lead a disciple making ministry.

James is the lead pastor of Sunrise Church in Hillsboro, OR. He has served on staff there as the youth pastor and lead pastor.

James is one of the most humble men I have met. Despite all the things he has done, being a Pastor of many congregations, he is real & straight up. James Anson came to Christ in the mid 80’s during an alcohol and drug fueled season which culminated in breaking up with his partner. Thinking suicide might be his only option he found Christ on his knees whilst living solo. Everything changed…everything. Experiencing an instant sense of call to full-time vocational ministry - after an intense period of personal discipleship James entered the ministry at the age of 24yrs old. Since then he has pastored churches in NZ in rural, regional and downtown Auckland. After 33yrs of leading 5 congregations and planting four churches James’ heart has been to seek the mind of the LORD of what He is saying and doing in this current generation. James is married to Viv with 3 adult children.
