On episode twenty-six of The Platform Podcast I sit down with Mr. New York, a long-time friend of mine from Milwaukee who's been killing the DJ scene. Mr. New York starts off by letting everyone know how he got his start in the DJ industry from throwing house parties to now holding residencies at the hottest night clubs in the city. When he began getting his foot in the door at popular venues, it wasn't always for the biggest pay check. Now he's built up his skills, gained a following and can use that negotiate his rate and even throw his own events. Holding residencies at different venues almost every day of the week is great but it's also difficult to sustain and can be tough on you mentally. Mr. New York reminisces on 2023 and how career wise it was the best year ever but personally one of his worst in a long time. With one of his most popular residencies closing their doors at the end of 2023, I asked Mr. New York what his plans are for a new Friday night residency and where he plans to go in "free agency." Always evolving and wanting to do new things, he recently threw his own Boiler Room set at Miramar Theatre. Bringing new ideas to Milwaukee is something he prides himself on as well as throwing successful events like R&B Tuesday, Saturday nights at No. 720 and many others. Schon als 14-jähriger Junge übernahm ich erstmals Verantwortung für Kinder und Jugendliche, als ich mich als Fußballschiedsrichter auf das Feld stellte und bei Spielen für Fairness sorgte. „Auffällig war, dass er es gar nicht nötig hatte, rigoros durchzugreifen. Er war damals schon sehr emphatisch und schaffte es sich mit Menschen auf Augenhöhe zu unterhalten.“, verrät mein ehemaliger Ausbilder Horst. Regelmäßig fuhr ich in meinen Ferien in einen Kinderferienclub. Als ich mit 16 Jahren alt genug war, wechselte ich die Seite und jobbte von da an selbst als Ferienanimateur für die Kids. „Ein echter Vollblut-Animateur. Er ist sich für nichts zu schade, um Menschen ein Lachen ins Gesicht zu zaubern!“, sagt sein Kollege Malte. Als ich in das Berufsleben einstieg und es erstmal keine Ferien mehr gab, wurde ich von meiner besten Freundin auf eine weitere Möglichkeit aufmerksam gemacht. Seither fahre ich einmal im Jahr mit ca. 180 Kindern und Jugendlichen in ein Ferienzeltlager, um ihnen die besten zwei Wochen des Jahres zu bescheren. Doch damit nicht genug, dachte ich mir im Dezember 2020! Ich möchte noch mehr bewegen. Es gibt noch so viel zu verbessern und ich sehe noch so viel Potential. Mein Ziel ist es, die Welt für Kinder und Jugendliche besser zu machen. Dazu möchte ich so viele Menschen wie möglich auf meine Reise mitnehmen und sie motivieren, sich ebenfalls für Kinder und Jugendliche zu engagieren, auf tolle Projekte für die Kids aufmerksam zu machen und der Generation von morgen den Start ins Leben einfacher zu machen. Wenn uns das gelingt, können wir uns langsam steigern. Seither engagiere ich mich als Multitalent: Ich unterstütze kurzfristige Projekte, die Hilfe benötigen, egal ob physisch oder monetär. Ich sammele sowohl Freiwillige als auch Spenden ein – immer mit 110% Herzblut. Dazu zeige ich mit meiner Facebookgruppe „Einsatz für das Wohl von Kindern und Jugendlichen – mit Matti Lindman“ immer wieder spannende Projekte für Kinder und Jugendliche auf, auf die sie ohne meine Hilfe bestimmt nicht gekommen wären. Ein wahres Nordlicht, ein waschechter Hanseate, geboren in Hannover und aufgewachsen in Oldenburg, von wo aus er eine Ausbildung zum Elektroniker bei der Marine absolviert hat. Heute wohnt er in Hamburg. Von dort geht es Wochenende um Wochenende in ferne Länder zu Gigs und zwischendurch betreibt er gemeinsam mit seiner Frau ein Restaurant mitten auf St. Pauli.
