What happens when a Fontan patient’s ejection fraction dips too low? Can a person’s heart damage be reversed? Is there hope for a cure for congenital heart defects?

Brenton Ball was born in 1990. He was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome or HLHS and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa in his first week of life. He has had several heart surgeries including a pulmonary artery banding, hemi-Fontan, and completion Fontan. He's had many stents put in, a pacemaker, and two ICDs.

Brenton has been married to his wife Kelsey for 5 years. They live in Iowa with their pet rabbit McBoon, a gift from Brenton’s sister last summer. They live close to their families and are a loving uncle and aunt to their four nephews and one niece. Brenton works part-time as a hotel desk clerk and enjoys reading and spending time with his family.


In this episode of "Heart to Heart with Anna," Brenton shares with Anna what his medical journey entailed, how he came to take part in a revolutionary, new medical procedure using stem cells, and how he endured having COVID-19.

I've been getting a lot of questions about the symptoms known as DKS lately, so here are my thoughts on the topic. Also, we discuss cross ventilation in tarantula enclosures.

NOTE: Although I didn't say it in the podcast, DKS is not a disease but a set of symptoms. We are not sure what exactly causes it at this time. 

Anyone who has ever experienced DKS symptoms in a tarantula can tell you how terrible it is to observe...and how helpless it leaves you feeling. In this episode, I'll review the paper "Dyskinetic Syndrome In Tarantula Spiders (Theraphosidae)" by Emily Draper and Steven A. Trim from the Veterinary Nursing Journal, (www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17415349.2018.1484677). In this paper, the authors discuss these symptoms and their possible causes.

The 20-year old producer from London has been producing for awhile but has only recently been starting to get mainstream exposure after his track "I Know" debuted on MistaJam's 1Xtra show. Subsequently "Can't Get Enough" and many of his other tracks were played on Skream & Benga's BBC Radio One show. He has also been doing collaborations with producers like Datsik and Mojo and remixing Emalkay. After the last few year's influx of screeching dubstep, DKS shows there's still a fresh sound in dubstep after all, and he's the one to push it. Tune in and let's hear it for DKS!
