    Cat Popper - Season 3 - Episode 02

    Cat Popper - Season 3 - Episode 02

Cat started out with classical music. Although discouraged to pursue other genres while studying jazz in college, she really found her stride in New York City where she sought out punk, Irish, bluegrass and reggae. The transition from upright to electric bass was hard, but she found her groove. From Jack White to Ryan Adams and the Cardinals to Puss n Boots – Cat has continued to prove she can rock with the best of them.

Podcast 401: Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley

Two of Nashville's finest musicians have teamed up once again for a new album.

On the recently released  'Living In A Song,' Dobro master Rob Ickes and guitarist Trey Hensley perform a collection of tunes that showcase their songwriting chops. On this week's podcast, we talk about the making of the album, Rob's background (he's a rare Dobro player who didn't start out on guitar!), the art of co-writing, working with Taj Mahal, the gear they use, Doc Watson, and much more.

    Doc Watson's 100th birthday celebration - part 2

    Doc Watson's 100th birthday celebration - part 2

    Hi everyone.

Today (March 3rd 2023) would have been Doc Watson's 100th birthday, so I've put together a couple of really special episodes to celebrate.

I spent the past 3 months interviewing people who knew, played with, worked with, were inspired by or just loved Doc and his music. I ended up with hours and hours of wonderful conversation and have edited it all into two episodes. This is the second....

This one focusses on people who were inspired by Doc and his music.

    You'll hear from:

    • Mike Marshall
    • Tony Trischka
    • Laurie Lewis
    • Bryan Sutton
    • Bob Minner
    • Scott Nygaard
    • Chris Eldridge
    • Jake Eddy
    • Sid Griffin
    • Tim O'Brien
    • Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show

All of these are brand new interviews carried out for these episodes.

They've been a joy to put together. I hope you enjoy them (and don't forget to check out episode 1).

Happy picking (and happy birthday Doc!)

    Matt

The United States has more than 1.5 million nonprofits — from homeless shelters, food banks and rescue squads to children’s choirs, science museums and animal refuges — that employ one out of every 10 Americans. Like any company, nonprofits have salaries and bills to pay, a budget to balance. They require money. And if enough people don’t know about them, don’t believe in them, don’t support them — in short, if they lack BUZZ — they suffer and die.

Episode 32: Country Blues with Jamie Shadowlight

Episode 32: Country Blues with Jamie Shadowlight

On this episode I had a special guest and friend named Jamie Shadowlight. Her and I talk about how excited she is to be a guest on my podcast, then we play an old timey song that I learned from the recordings of Dock Boggs & Doc Watson called "Country Blues", then we tell a banjo joke and then that's it for the episode.

    Episode 31: Shady Grove

    Episode 31: Shady Grove

I felt like getting back to an old timey sound and slow things down this week. Sometimes I get so caught up in trying to develop my own fast style that I forget why I fell in love with the banjo in the first place. . Shady Grove is one of my all time favorite songs and I love Clarence Ashley's version. I may not sound like Clarence Ashley, but I certainly try and in my effort a new sound is born that I have grown to accept. The full story can be heard on the audio podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts.
