Puppy Farming and OOH Disasters with UK RVN Abby Wharton

Puppy Farming and OOH Disasters with UK RVN Abby Wharton

Planning to make a quick buck by selling pups? Fancy getting your latest trendy cross breed cocker-labra-pug-doodle bitch pregnant? Think again. Abby tells us about just *some* of the things that can go wrong in the 'puppy trade'. These poor animals are living beings, and as such can (and will) attract large vet bills and welfare disasters. Don't get caught up by inexperience and dubious advice. If you are planning to breed, do your research.  And by that, I mean ask your vet. Not some random social media group.

Episode 13: Justice to Man’s Best Friend: The Ethics of Commercial Dog Breeding, with Candace Croney

Episode 13: Justice to Man’s Best Friend: The Ethics of Commercial Dog Breeding, with Candace Croney

Selective breeding of dogs currently helps meet the high demand for purebred dogs, but there are concerns about the ethicality of this practice.

In this podcast, Dr. Candace C. Croney of Purdue University talks about commercial breeding practices in the United States, social opposition to the practice, and the potential consequences of its outright abolition on the beings central to the discussion: dogs themselves. Her discussion is an extension of her paper “Turning up the Volume on Man’s Best Friend: Ethical Issues Associated with Commercial Dog Breeding,” which is published in Brill’s Journal of Applied Animal Ethics Research.

A Sucker For A Cute Puppy

A Sucker For A Cute Puppy
Puppy eyes resemble the black holes that exist in outer space in that they have so much gravitational pull that once you cast your gaze upon them, your emotions and your sense of logic are sucked in, and there’s no escape. As a consequence, you end up with a dog that is incompatible with your lifestyle, your family, or your existing pets. Making matters worse, your new dog is a genetic mess that will require a direct deposit made out to your veterinarian for the next decade! Tune in this week to learn how not to be a sucker for every cute puppy. Instead, Bryan will be giving tips on how to find perhaps not the cutest puppy, but the perfect one for you and your family. Bryan will also be answering listener questions and emails. If you have a question you would like Bryan to answer on the show, send it to Bryan@TamingtheWild.com Episode Key words (Comma Separated) puppy, dog breeders, dog breeding, puppy mills, selecting a good puppy, finding a good breeder

Episode 110: The Dark Tradition Behind Spain's Hunting Dogs

Episode 110: The Dark Tradition Behind Spain's Hunting Dogs

Today on Animal Instinct, we're joined by documentary filmmaker Yeray Lopez Portillo, who's working on a film about hunting dog culture in Spain. Yo Galgo tells the story of the galgo, a greyhound breed treated like goods rather than creatures. Used for hunting down hare, a strong hunting dog has a short shelf life, such that thousands are abandoned or killed at the end of each hunting season. Yeray tells us about his journey sharing the plight of the galgo on camera.
