Episode 210: Me + You + Art + Wellness with Marlea Edwards
Greetings Glocal Citizens! I’m back in Accra and it’s HOT and HUMID, but thankfully not so dusty--I’ve successfully evaded the Harmattan! A significant contrast to the environs for my guest this week who dials in from her hometown of London, England. Raised between London and Brooklyn with roots in Jamaica, Aruba and Donimica, Marlea Edwards was drawn to the creative arts from theatre to photography, storytelling, mythology and anthropology from an early age. She is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary creative artist and creative consultant with a key focus on visual storytelling and connecting to audiences. She is CEO and founder of Me + You Films, a boutique production company. As a global, independent professional creative director, producer, director, writer, filmmaker, and edit producer, her early career and work includes working on award-winning BBC shows like Top Gear, Strictly Come Dancing and Eastenders 25 Live, to the London 2012 Olympic Games, London and New York Fashion week and Lenny Kravitz’s Strut Tour. Other Brands and Clients include Endemol, BBC, Tom Ford and Tom Ford Beauty, Gucci, DVF, Kohl’s, FarFetch, Lush Cosmetics, Preen and ITN Productions. Her latest project, Garms: Black Culture's Influence on British Fashion (https://youtu.be/9wnbOFO6lds?si=eZz_tvYQX1O2EgyK), a one-off documentary deep dive into the world of Black British fashion and culture premiers this week on Wednesday, February 21st. Currently writing and freelancing for award-winning brands and production companies, her own and others, when she’s not working with commercial clients she creates artwork with an African spiritualist theme focused on the female form. A New Medical School Designed For A New Generation - Dr. Ramin Ahmadi, Dean and Chief Academic Officer of the American Canadian School of Medicine

Something as complicated as starting a medical school is bound to include unanticipated obstacles, but few schools can match the roller coaster ride of the American Canadian School of Medicine in the Commonwealth of Dominica which just welcomed its first class of students. Our Raise the Line guest, Dr. Ramin Ahmadi, along with colleagues from Yale and Penn State medical schools, had worked for years to design an innovative curriculum and train faculty for a new medical school in Kazan, Russia. Then came Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “Because of the war, we had to pull out. That was the end of the project at that point and we were all very sad,” Ahmadi tells host Shiv Gaglani. Tune in to learn how the project was given new life and how Ahmadi and his team are meeting the needs and preferences of modern students with a flipped-classroom, case-based approach to education. You’ll also hear about ACSOM’s different approach to clinical training, new model for residency programs and other innovations. And be sure to stay tuned to hear about his remarkable experiences in global health and human rights, and gain from his insights on how physicians can protect themselves from burnout.

    Inside Out 😳

    Inside Out 😳

Are you spending all your energy trying to stabilize the world around you to create stability in your life?  Trying to "Fix" everything external ... to change an INTERNAL feeling?  Can we just rest in that question for a moment and get REAL?

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” ― Marcus Aurelius

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." - Dr. Wayne Dyer

"As a Man Thinks..." How many quotes and philosophies have been pulled from this?  Our realities are truly comprised and created by what we believe and think. Our actions are predicated on how we perceive and think about specific situations.
Is YOUR patoot getting irked in life?

You Spot it... You've got it. Look for where that's true, then start to work on your end of the thought equation.

The Art Of NOPE ( Living Lucky )

The Art Of NOPE ( Living Lucky )

Do you say "Yes" to EVERYTHING?  Is it hard to say, "NO"?  In order to stay true to your own Purpose in life and to be available for the best possible opportunities to live into your best possible life, you will have to set personal "Yes" "No" boundaries.

When you say "Yes" to 1 thing, you are effectively saying "No" to the 101M other possibilities available in that time space.  WHOA!!!

If "No" feels too forceful, have fun easing into your personal discernment with the word "Nope".  It's actually fun to say.

The "Yes Mentality" is an amazing way to find your starting point and to get moving. It is also very beneficial/necessary within your "Purpose Lane", but don't get sidetracked or derailed by it.

    Dominica

    Dominica

Dominica, or dom-in-EE-ka as it's pronounced, might seem like every other run-of-the-mill Caribbean island. But it's a little different then the rest.

First off, they are relatively untouched and some say that if Columbus were to go there today, it wouldn't be too much different than when he first arrived. It also has the highest number of volcanoes per capita at a whopping 10! Okay, that's not a lot but it is for this tiny, little island.

It's also home to the largest population of ethnic Caribe people AND is one of the only countries with purple in it's flag.

We go deep on this one, getting into what our own coat-of-arms would be, under what circumstances would we try another human, and even what our own country, CountryBoy Island would be like....*spoiler alert: we all concluded that we would probably end up eating Jason and making a raft out of his hair. Yup.

Have you been to Dominica? Tell us what we missed or what we (hopefully) got right!

Burning her ship to follow her passion: Cherelle George

Burning her ship to follow her passion: Cherelle George

In this episode, Cherelle talks about how she made the decision to  “burn her ship”, quit her full time job, and pursue her passion of sharing her Trinidadian roots through her Caribbean focused dance and fitness company SocaFit. She talks about how imposter syndrome crept in and kept her community smaller. However, once the pandemic hit, she was forced to either go online or close, so she got over her fears and is now serving people internationally.

Cherelle is a proud Canadian born with deep Trinidadian roots that extend farther than you or I can imagine. Little did she know that important events throughout her upbringing would subconsciously shape her into the professional entertainer and entrepreneur she is today.

You could say her journey started at a very young age - playing Mas during Cariwest as a baby and growing up playing the steel drums in her father’s band, Trincan Steel Orchestra, for over 10 years. Fast forward to today, now owning her own Caribbean-focused dance and fitness company, SocaFit. Cherelle created SocaFit to allow her to celebrate and share her Trinidadian culture through dance and fitness and to also create programs to enable youth to explore and learn about their own history. What started as her teaching her mother’s friends in a small room has grown to an international audience for both adults and children.
