Ep 174 David Kline: Great Possessions

Ep 174 David Kline: Great Possessions

David Kline is one of the Plain People, but to us he is anything but boring.  He’s a naturalist, writer, farmer and all-around interesting man.  He joined us at the 2021 Horse Progress Days exhibition in Mt. Hope, Ohio.

Ep 159 Audrey Popoff: Women in the Draft

Ep 159 Audrey Popoff: Women in the Draft

In the spirit of that impromptu moment that often happens in the Bowman universe, today we're going to bring you a quick conversation that occurred at the National Western Stock Show this January. You might know that the draft horses hold a special place for me, and there are very few things that are as majestic and glorious as a full hitch at speed thundering around the ring. One of those hitches this year was driven by a woman named Audrey Popoff, from Colton, California.

And since March is officially Women's History Month, I think it's only appropriate for you to hear this one today. From the National Western Stock Show 2022, here's Champion Draft Ladies Team Driver, Audrey Popoff, of Unhitched Ranch.

Ep 124 Daniel Wengerd, HPD 2021 Speaking Words of Wisdom: Let it Be

Ep 124 Daniel Wengerd, HPD 2021 Speaking Words of Wisdom: Let it Be

Are we happy with more?  Not always (unless it’s more dirt, in which case there’s a direct translation for some of us dirt hoarders).

Today we bring you an interview from one of our newly-favorite events.  Daniel Wengerd, General Coordinator for Horse Progress Days 2021, sits down and talks with us about the planning behind an undertaking like this, and how a team of “Plain People” (you’ll find out what that means if you listen) worked together to create something that is incredibly complex, yet seems so simple.  That’s no small feat with something that involves 40,000 people, 400 horses, and 40 tons of manure, among a lot of other interesting things.  Okay, so maybe the manure was an estimate, but what little was visible went to good use, we can assure you.

There will be more upcoming podcasts from Horse Progress Days 2021, and we’ll be going back again to this fabulous rotating event, no matter which midwestern vowel state it’s in next year.  It’s simply one of the most enjoyable events we’ve covered, with some of the nicest people we’ve met.  And they had manure spreaders.  Life is good.

Ep 122 We're Going To Riceland...(Thank You Paul Simon)

Ep 122 We're Going To Riceland...(Thank You Paul Simon)

Why am I here?  What day is it?  What planet are we on, anyway?  Those questions and more…

Today’s podcast comes to you from a hotel room in Ashtabula, Ohio.  After a crazy month (or two or…) of travel, we’re asking those existential questions of the hotel room ceiling.  It’s hard to keep track of all of those things when the world is spinning faster and faster, it seems, and most especially when a road seems more like a fast way to get somewhere and less like an enjoyable ride.

But we found a man that reminds us of the meaning one might find at the beginning, end and all things in between.  Ralph Rice of Riceland Meadows is an author, blogger and North American Suffolk Horse Association member, but might just be more of a philosopher than any of the above.

We truly enjoyed our NASHA get-together, and most especially our conversation with Ralph, because sometimes, we all need a reminder of why we do what we do, and why it just might be important to travel at Draft speed, instead of lightspeed.
