    S.5 Ep.3: Ash: A Lingering Hope

Sometimes foresters in eastern North America may feel as if they are in a Lemony Snicket novel, with chestnut blight, spongy moth, Dutch elm disease, and emerald ash borer creating a continuing series of unfortunate events.  Emerald ash borer or EAB is one of the most recent invasive pests with the potential to eliminate an entire tree species. And foresters have many questions on how to manage EAB impacted stands and what they can do to help maintain ash trees as a component of our forests. On this episode of SilviCast we talk with two of North America's leading researchers working on EAB genetics and ecology, Kathleen Knight and Jennifer Koch of the USFS Northern Research Station in Delaware, Ohio.

Katelyn Ilkani speaks with Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Laura Bray about raising scholarship funding. As Vice President for College Advancement and External Communications, Bray shares her experiences over the past year as head of fundraising. She describes MATC’s “Healthcare Heroes Fund” and how her team raises funding to support graduates who need to pay for licensure to obtain employment. The conversation focuses on how MATC is working toward ensuring equity in their scholarship awards, and Bray describes their participation in the “Moon Shot for Equity.”

    325: Chanel James

What does the "middle" of a designer's career look like? Does the "middle" exist outside of a corporate company's career ladder? I examine these questions and more with this week's guest, the one and only Chanel James. As a designer for EAB, Chanel works on production and design and for a number of different projects, all with the goal of making education smarter and our communities stronger.

Chanel talked about what attracted her to work for EAB, and also spoke on her work with AIGA DC on their board of directors. We also discussed the South and design, how she acquired a love for illustration from a popular kid's television show, and yes, we went into the mid-career designer topic I mentioned earlier. Chanel lives by the motto "make it pretty", and no matter her role or profession, she definitely brings the skills and experience to the table that make her motto a fact!
