EP33 | A Fool's Game: The Murder of Gregg Smart, Derry, New Hampshire (part two)

Part two in the series about Gregg Smart's murder and those who planned and carried out this plot to kill him. It's ridiculous to imagine anyone going through with such a ridiculous plan. Yet four teenagers from Seabrook, NH did at the behest of a 22 year old high school media coordinator. It is a sensational story and mesmerized the region for the better part of a year in 1990-91.

Gregg Smart is the forgotten victim in the crime of the century - as it has been called over and over given its history of firsts. Gregg was murdered on May 1, 1990. The 24-year-old insurance broker was shot dead in his home six days before his first wedding anniversary.

At first, it looked like he'd  interrupted a burglary, because that's what the killers were told to make it look like. As the investigation wore on, it uncovered a plot rife with salacious headlines by a mastermind who was first tried in the media before they were tried in court. The Smart case was a spectacle,  the original crime of the century. The first televised trial.

WMUR Channel 9 in Manchester, New Hampshire preempted its daily programming to televise the two-week trial. People stood in line at 2am to get a seat in the courtroom. The pretrial coverage was frenzied. I often cover stories that affected me. This is one of those. I lived in Southern New Hampshire in the late 80s/early 90s. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing  the name Pamela Smart.

EP21 | Karina Holmer, The Case That Haunts Boston with Emily Sweeney of the Boston Globe

EP21 | Karina Holmer, The Case That Haunts Boston with Emily Sweeney of the Boston Globe

On the evening of June 21, 1996, 20-year-old Karina Holmer went with friends to her favorite Boston club to celebrate summer solstice - a big holiday in her homeland of Sweden. She was reported missing by friends and it was discovered that she was the woman found mutilated in the trash. Her gruesome murder remains unsolved. I want to change that.

I’ve been planning on doing this case for a long time. It has been at the top of my list of those that have most impacted me, one that troubles me. Her story is particularly sensitive because it remains unsolved.

June 22 marked 25 years since Karina was seen alive. She has been gone longer than she lived. I always remember her because June 22 is my birthday, and it was the summer before I started college in Boston. Karina's identity was pushed in the press as "The Swedish Nanny," she was the girl in the dumpster. It is a terrifying story.

Today, we are no closer to learning who did this and why. I’d settle for who. The why. Who knows. Motive is far less important now. We would like to know. Of course. But 25 years in, the likelihood that her case is cracked is slim.

June 22, 1996. The last time Karina Holmer was seen alive.
I want to see her case solved. And I have a plan to try.

EP20 | Abel Harris: The Shooting at Bunratty's, Allston, Mass with David Giammatteo

Allston Rock City: The events of August 1, 1987 are difficult to reconcile. A man nobody knew walked in to a rock club and shot one of the most beloved members of their misfit family.

The rock band Bang was wrapping up their set when a man who had been asked to leave hours before returned to the club, pulled out a gun and started shooting. It took no time for patrons and regulars to figure out the sounds were not coming from the band and everyone ran for cover.

That’s when bartender Abel Harris hopped over the bar and approached the shooter to reason with him to stop firing. Instead of talking, the man raised the gun and put two bullets into Abel's head.

The man no one knew left the club and the hunt was on to find out who did this to to someone everyone loved, Abel Harris.

EP18 | Michael Costin: Reading Hockey Dad Death, Reading, Massachusetts

On July 5, 2000, a group of local kids headed to the skating rink for stick practice. It was a common occurrence. Something they'd done dozens of times. Except for some of them, it will be for the last time. Two dads got in a heated face off. One of the dads, Michael Costin, ended up dead. This case was covered nationwide and became synonymous with parental violence in youth sports.

EP17 | Beth Brodie: Crime of the Hometown Kind, Groveland, Massachusetts with Beth's brother Sean Aylward

EP17 | Beth Brodie: Crime of the Hometown Kind, Groveland, Massachusetts with Beth's brother Sean Aylward

In November of 1992, the murder of 15-year-old Beth Brodie devastated the small town of Groveland, Mass (where I spent my childhood). Her killer was a 16 -year-old boy she knew from school who'd developed a violent obsession with her. For this premeditated and gruesome murder, he was sentenced as an adult to life in prison. That’s only part of her story.

I talk to Beth's brother Sean Aylward to get a first-hand account of Beth's story, about the case, what it’s like for a family of a murdered loved one and how they fight to keep attention on Beth and not about the person who took her life.

EP16 | Shaun Ouillette: Forever Fourteen, Canton, Massachusetts (part two)

    #truecrime #cantonmass #newenglandcrimestories

The murder of 14-year-old Shaun Ouillette in the fall of 1986 remains one of the cruelest in our state's history. Shaun was the new kid at Canton High looking to make friends. He was an easy going boy whose only mistake was trusting the one kid in town with violent intentions. Part two delves into the the many warning signs given off by his teenaged killer, Rod Matthews, and how an entire town seemed to miss every single one of them.

EP15 | Shaun Ouillette: Forever Fourteen, Canton, Massachusetts (part one)

In the fall of 1986, Shaun Ouillette was the new kid at Canton High in Canton, Massachusetts. The friendly, easy going 14 year old freshman had been having  trouble making friends in his new school. Hoping to strike up a new friendship, he took the bus after school on November 20 to another 14 year old's house to buy some fireworks and hang out.
What almost everyone else didn't know is that Shaun was the target of Rod Matthews' murder plan to "see what it feels like". The details of the planning and execution of are stunning, knowing that 14 year old kids are involved.

EP14 | Kristen Crowley: An Unfathomable Death, Peabody, Massachusetts

On the night of June 1, 1996, two ex-Marines and former roommates lied to their girlfriends and headed the local strip club where they spent hours drinking and propositioning dancers. Around 12am, when they failed to convince any of them to leave with them, they happened upon a stunning young woman named Kristen Crowley at a nearby convenience store. They were clearly confusing fantasy with reality. One of the men thought she looked just like one of the girls they'd seen at the club. Within one hour of  her chance encounter with these two men, she was dead. This is the unfathomable story of the murder of Kristen Crowley.

EP 5 | The Boston Murder Hoax, Carol DiMaiti, Baby Christopher, and Charles Stuart

EP 5 | The Boston Murder Hoax, Carol DiMaiti, Baby Christopher, and Charles Stuart

On the evening of October 23, 1989, Boston was rocked by one of  the most notorious and damaging crimes in the city's history. The murder of Carol DiMaiti Stuart was tragic and shocking. She was 7 1/2 months pregnant with her first baby; she was murdered after leaving a birthing class at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. The case was highly-publicized, emotionally-charged, and sensationalized by Boston media and outlets across the country. The crime was captured on an early version of reality television. It scarred the city for life. The police tore through Boston's neighborhoods looking for a "Black man with a raspy voice wearing a black tracksuit".  The man they were looking for didn't exist. It was all a hoax. Marky Mark even wrote a song about it....
