Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #87: Matt Asner (Ed Asner)

Rarified Heir Podcast Episode #87: Matt Asner (Ed Asner)

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to Matt Asner, son of seven-time Emmy winner, actor Ed Asner. Of course, most of us know Ed Asner as Lou Grant from The Mary Tyler Moore Show as well as the dramatic series Lou Grant that followed. But as Matt told us on this episode, Ed Asner was generational. To some, it was his seventies and eighties television work that made an impact. To others, it might be his work (and his voice) from a host of animated series in the 90s from Batman or Superman or Spider Man. Some know him as Santa in the Christmas classic Elf. Others know him as Carl Fredricksen in Pixar’s Up. Still others know him as the bad guy from the sixties film They Call Me Mr.Tibbs and even others from mini-series like Roots and Rich Man, Poor Man.

Regardless of how you know the gruff but lovable actor, Ed Asner was known as a consummate professional, head of the Screen Actors Guild, tireless activist for a variety of causes, and Matt tells us all about them on the latest episode. We also get to hear about Gavin MacLeod’s bubble gum obsession, “Uncle” Ted Knight, The Compass Players who Ed was a member of that birthed Second City, Paul Newman & Fort Apache The Bronx, death threats as well as family LA haunts like Art’s Deli, Madam Wong’s West and The Ed Asner Family Center. The Center promotes self-confidence, balance and wellness in differently-abled individuals and their families. And it’s all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen. Oh Mr. Grant!

    Santa Showdown - Miracle on 34th Street (1994) & Elf (2003)

One Shall Stand. Three Shall Fall.

It's the thrilling conclusion to our Chris Kringle King of the Ring! To recap, all four of us are going head-to-head-to-head-to-head, each having chosen what we each deem to be the ultimate Santa Claus film depiction. This week we cover our final two challengers and determine the ultimate Claus.

    Talking Movies, October 9, 2021
Guest, Eddie Asner (November 15, 1929 – August 29, 2021) was an American actor and president of the Screen Actors Guild. He is best remembered for playing Lou Grant during the 1970s and early 1980s, on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series Lou Grant, making him one of the few television actors to portray the same character in both a comedy and a drama. He is the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, having won seven – five for portraying Lou Grant (three as Supporting Actor in a Comedy Television Series on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and two as Lead Actor in a Dramatic Television Series on spin-off Lou Grant). His other Emmys were for performances in two television miniseries: Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), where he won for Outstanding Lead Actor for a Single Performance in a TV series, and Roots (1977), for which he won for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in a TV series. He also played John Wayne's adversary Bart Jason in the 1966 Western El Dorado. Asner played Santa Claus in several films, including in 2003's Elf. In 2007, he voiced the main villain Krad in Christmas Is Here Again.[citation needed] In 2009, he voiced Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's animated film Up and made a guest appearance on CSI: NY in the episode "Yahrzeit". In early 2011, Asner returned to television as butcher Hank Greziak in Working Class, the first original sitcom on cable channel CMT. He starred in Michael, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, on CBC Television and appeared in The Glades. Asner guest-starred as Guy Redmayne in the sixth season of The Good Wife.
