    POTs With Maddie

    POTs With Maddie

This week we will discuss POTs once again with a new guest, Maddie Connell. Maddie is a 27 year old who works in Veterinary neurology and neurosurgery studying to become a Veterinary Neurologist herself.  She runs a popular TikTok to raise awareness and provide research based information on Ehlers Danlos, POTs, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Complex PTSD.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS): A disorder that causes problems with circulation (blood flow), POTS can cause your heart to beat too fast when you stand up. It can lead to fainting, chest pain and shortness of breath.  It is one of the 5 types of Dysautonomia.

Dysautonomia is a general term for a group of disorders that share a common problem – that is, an autonomic nervous system (ANS) that doesn’t function as it should. The ANS is the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary body functions (functions you don’t consciously control) like your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, body and skin temperature, hormonal function, bladder function, sexual function and many other functions.

When the ANS doesn’t work the way it should, it can cause heart and blood pressure problems, breathing trouble, loss of bladder control and many other problems.

Dysautonomia happens when the nerves in your ANS don’t communicate as they should. When your ANS doesn’t send messages or receive messages as it should or the message isn’t clear, you experience a variety of symptoms and medical conditions.

Dysautonomia can affect ANS functions including:

    • Blood pressure.

    • Breathing.

    • Digestion.

    • Heart rate.

    • Kidney function.

    • Pupil dilation and constriction in the eyes.

    • Sexual function.

    • Body and skin temperature control.

S3 E15 - Becoming The Father You Never Had | Alex VanHouten Interviewed "On Wisdom And Grit"
    Hey there, Coach Alex here.

This show is a bit more personal than most.

Corey Huddleston from Wisdom And Grit recently interviewed me in front of his online community in front of thousands of men to explore the answer to this, VERY IMPORTANT question:

“When does a boy become a man?”

I was raised as the oldest of 4 in a single parent home below the poverty line.

Part of my journey in manhood and fatherhood has been to become the father that I never had growing up.

Spoiler alert - I’m still growing and learning.

But there are some very powerful lessons and events that my path has brought me through that I hope to impart to my boys as the become men.

It was an awesome opportunity to share some of my most meaningful - and painful - experiences. I hope that you find it valuable!

#017: Overcoming Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome with Dr. Patrick Lowe

#017: Overcoming Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome with Dr. Patrick Lowe

In this episode of Real Chiropractic Stories, Dr. Patrick Lowe shares his story of early diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome as a teen. Over the years Dr. Lowe has overcome this disorder and is now a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is active in CrossFit. Listen to Dr. Lowe explain the importance of chiropractic in his life, and his three (but really two) key things to strive to achieve a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Parenting with Chronic Illness with Monica

Parenting with Chronic Illness with Monica

Today we’re getting real about parenting (and living) with chronic illness. Fellow podcaster, Monica, stops by to tell us her unbelievable story and what she’s learned the hard way as a parent with multiple health conditions. I share my own struggles, and the two of us talk candidly about humor as a coping strategy, shifting our parenting standards to really low, and how we feel about having to do that. We also discuss marriage guilt, sex life changes, upswings vs. downswings, the insanity that is being your own medical detective, the paralyzation that contradictory advice can cause, and the problem with “mind over matter” and toxic positivity. We both have a hilarious revelation about optimism, and Monica shares about the ultimatum she gave her husband after the passing of a close friend. If you have a “supplement graveyard” (that’s a pile of half-used supplements), then this episode is for you.

119 - Carry Your Cross: The Truth About My Ehlers Danlos

119 - Carry Your Cross: The Truth About My Ehlers Danlos
In case one would mistake my running with a shirt off as vain or arrogant…

The sun on my skin, the wind whipping around my body – the fire of the eyes of God…breath from his nostrils.

In the heat of the summer with sweat dripping on the pavement every step…one foot in front of the other – forward into the heavy, stifling haze – humid and thick.

I bear my cross forward for all to see.

They don’t see the weight on my shoulders, but I know it’s there.

Let them who have ears to hear, hear the message well.

I woke up this morning and accepted my daily bread with grace. I forgave the ills against me and hope to also be forgiven.

The pain is great but my soul is greater.

Let not my will, but yours be done.

And today I choose to carry my cross.

I stoop with worn hands and stiff back…wrap my arms around the beam…and remember what I am fighting for.

A great heave and it is, once again, upon my shoulder – rough, splintery – rubbing callous into my neck and back.

This is my burden – and I choose to bear it well.

I set my sights upon the hill in front of me and move. One foot in front of the other.

The way is narrow and difficult. My lungs burn. My joints ache. My sinew twists, protesting every inch.

I watch the path closely because even small stumbling blocks are tragic setbacks while under this much weight.

Sometimes I hear the silence of the morning dew resting peacefully on God’s green earth.

Sometimes I feel the caress of a breeze easing my salt-soaked brow.

Sometimes I see the faces of loved ones and the jeers of my enemies.

Let them who have eyes to see, let them see.

Not the body I’ve built, but the heavy cross I carry.

I’ve interviewed on several podcasts since starting the Defining Dad Bod movement

    The Dad Edge Podcast

    Generation Ucan’s Show

    Andy Storch’s Hotseat

And Dan Zehner’s Anthem of the Adventurer to name a few

But Kenyon Zitzka got some stuff out of me that I haven’t said on air before — something about his laid back interview style gave me an opportunity to speak more deeply about the Defining Dad Bod movement and how its evolving.

    Powerful conversation.

He gave me the media from his show “No Excuses” and so I am sharing the message here!

Very approachable for anyone new to the movement!
