The Argument For instant Runoff (aka Ranked Choice) Voting

The Argument For instant Runoff (aka Ranked Choice) Voting
Former Georgia State Representative Scot Turner, now the executive director of Eternal Vigilance Action, Inc, promotes reforming elections by using ranked choice voting - also known as instant runoff voting. This allows voters to rank candidates from most to least favorite. Example: your favorite candidate would be ranked 1, your next favorite candidate would be ranked 2, etc.

Larry Diamond on Election Reform: An Existential Issue for American Democracy

Larry Diamond on Election Reform: An Existential Issue for American Democracy

"The future health, if not survival, of American democracy is in danger in a way that it hasn't been in our lifetime," warns Larry Diamond, who sat down with Francis Fukuyama to discuss voting rights, the Electoral Count Act, and what reforms are needed to avert a future political catastrophe.

Larry Diamond is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, the Mosbacher Senior Fellow in Global Democracy at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. He is also a professor by courtesy of Political Science and Sociology at Stanford. His research focuses on democratic trends and conditions around the world and on policies and reforms to defend and advance democracy. His latest edited book (with Orville Schell), China's Influence and American Interests (Hoover Press, 2019), urges a posture of constructive vigilance toward China’s global projection of “sharp power,” which it sees as a rising threat to democratic norms and institutions. He offers a massive open online course (MOOC) on Comparative Democratic Development through the edX platform and is now writing a textbook to accompany it.

Diamond’s book, Ill Winds: Saving Democracy from Russian Rage, Chinese Ambition, and American Complacency, analyzes the challenges confronting liberal democracy in the United States and around the world at this potential “hinge in history,” and offers an agenda for strengthening and defending democracy at home and abroad. A paperback edition with a new preface was released by Penguin in April 2020. His other books include: In Search of Democracy (2016), The Spirit of Democracy (2008), Developing Democracy: Toward Consolidation (1999),  Promoting Democracy in the 1990s (1995), and Class, Ethnicity, and Democracy in Nigeria (1989). He has also edited or coedited more than forty books on democratic development around the world, most recently, Dynamics of Democracy in Taiwan: The Ma Ying-jeou Years.

Democracy IRL is produced by the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL), part of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University.

Dr. Douglas G. Frank: Election Integrity and Reform

Dr. Douglas G. Frank: Election Integrity and Reform

As Conservatives watched the election returns come in across the country, we saw unprecedented irregularities as Democrats and even Republicans used the Virus as an excuse to do away with many time-honored election integrity measures. No doubt, Trump faced an uphill battle – going up against the leftist media corporations, social media censorship and the pandemic. It was not a fair fight.

However, how are we supposed to identify true election fraud?

Dr. Douglas G. Frank, a world-renowned physicist, approaches the issue using the scientific method.  He was recently featured in two of Mike Lindell’s documentaries (“Scientific Proof” and “Absolute Interference”) after his discovery of two algorithms that he believes were used to manipulate our elections.  Dr. Frank has been working with dozens of teams across the country for election reform and will be speaking in Tennessee in late January 2022.

Episode 86-The Truth About the Election Reform for Georgia

What's REALLY in the Georgia Voter Reform Law and why are some people and businesses so offended by it?  This week the National Crawford Roundtable debunks the fallacies being perpetrated by opponents to the "new" law and also looks at hypocracy of the corporations who choose to join in on the boycott of Georgia but remain tied to foreign companies with abysmal human rights policies.

Show 2021-11 Segment 2 Does Racial Equity Demand Democrats' "For The People Act"

Show 2021-11 Segment 2 Does Racial Equity Demand Democrats' "For The People Act"
Chris Arps from Project 21 (a national network of black conservatives) discusses the “For The People Act” and other efforts to reform elections in the US. Arps disagrees with the assertion that many liberal proposals are needed as part of making voting more accessible to minorities. He also pushes back against the argument that changes including universal mail in voting, automatic voter registration, and ballot harvesting are part of achieving racial equity.

Election Legislation in the States: Moving Forward or Backward?

Election Legislation in the States: Moving Forward or Backward?

The 2020 elections hinged, in dramatic ways, on widely varying state laws and state election procedures. Major changes were made in light of the pandemic, to expand options for mail-in and early voting and to Election Day itself. These changes engendered strong support and strong opposition, and were one reason for the record turnout of 160 million voters. Now, state legislatures are in session all around the country. Will the changes adopted in 2020 be made permanent? Will voting options be expanded further? Or will states seek to roll back voting opportunities as a result?

On Thursday, February 18th, the Ash Center hosted a discussion titled Moving Forward or Moving Backward: Election Legislation in the States with leading state election experts and state legislators to see where things stand, and where they might go.  Tune into the discussion featuring:

    • Dale Ho, Director of the Voting Rights Project, ACLU
    • Nan Grogan Orrock, State Senator, Georgia
    • Wendy Underhill, Director of Elections and Redistricting, National Conference of State Legislatures
    • Miles Rapoport (Moderator), Senior Practice Fellow of American Democracy, Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation
