Ending Child Marriages - Bongai Mhloyl

Ending Child Marriages - Bongai Mhloyl

Originally from Zimbabwe, Bongai has witnessed the “girl child” being sold into marriage at a very young age (some as young as 10) to men in their 60s and 70s. End Child Marriages focuses on education in African countries so that girls are not forced into marriage. Education equips them with the tools necessary for success.

    ****
Today, Bongai runs her charity from her Philadelphia-area home. Attached is additional information. She is certainly “Better To…” to help young girls in her native Africa.

American-African Youth Leadership Foundation (AAYLF) founded in 2010, is a nonprofit organization, 501©3 registered in Pennsylvania

MISSION: We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving vulnerable girls from poverty ending the risk of early child marriage.
We believe that no girl should be robbed of her childhood, health, education, and her aspirations.
AAYLF funds orphans and at-risk girls from the poorest sections of Zimbabwe so that they can attend school.
Our program will cover all the costs including tuition, books, transportation, nutritious meals, and in some cases, we will provide housing so that the girls can escape child marriages and further their education.

WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO?  When a girl is married before the age of 18, she and her family are more likely to be poor, uneducated, and unhealthy.  In Zimbabwe, more than 50% of girls that are married before age 18, face an end to their education, barriers to vocational and life skills, and increased risks of domestic violence and sexual diseases.  Not only is child marriage illegal, but it is also a direct violation of human rights, one that can be corrected through education.

LONG-TERM IMPACT: We hope to challenge the rigid cultural norms that promote gender discrimination and child marriages in Zimbabwe. Currently, we have sixty (60) girls in our program saved from child marriages. Our goal for 2021 is to save 100 girls from child marriages and keep them in school.

What does it mean to empower the girls we raise? Today Larissa and Jan talk about the exciting new project they are working on in Iringa, Tanzania.

    About Brave Enough:
Brave Enough is here to remind you, you’re not alone and that you have the strength to be Brave Enough for one more day.

When you add one simple word to Brave, it changes the very meaning … by definition Brave Enough means ... to endure or face unpleasant conditions or behavior without showing fear as required for that situation.

Just enough bravery for one minute, one hour, one day, one obstacle at a time.

I have faced struggles in my life that I have not let define me, but they have made me the strong independent woman I am today. I enjoy college football, specifically my Ohio State Buckeyes! If it has to do with Star Wars, Pirates, Marvel or Disney, it is a safe bet with me. Horses and barrel racing hold a special place in my heart. [LEARN MORE]

Jan Sherman: Being a mom to my son Brandon and two step-children is the best job in the world!  I also have three grandchildren that I am incredibly proud of.  My husband, Tim, and I have two Yorkies who are a part of our family and travel everywhere with us.  My heart is full!  I love football, NASCAR, and soccer, and enjoy hiking, kayaking, biking, and snowshoeing.  That fresh air keeps me young – LOL! Empowering our Daughters, Juggling Marriage and Motherhood and Rediscovering Who We Are with Sahar Hamdan

Empowering our Daughters, Juggling Marriage and Motherhood and Rediscovering Who We Are with Sahar Hamdan

In Episode 29, Sahar Hamdan-Khalaf stops by to talk to us about marriage, motherhood and how she's taking the necessary steps to rediscovering herself after all these years.

Sahar fell in love and got married at the age of 18 and one year later she welcomed her first child into the world. Now in her mid 30s, Sahar is the mother of two teenage daughters, a 17 and 15yr old. She is also the mother of two young boys, 10 and 5 years old. Growing up in a strict household, Sahar shares how she's deciding on how to raise her kids differently by earning one another’s trust and learning how to guide her kids instead of controlling them.

We discuss the topic of relationships and marriage, building confidence and empowering our daughters. Sahar also opens up about her inter-cultural relationship. As a Palestinian, she had to deal with the dreaded conversation of telling her parents she was interested in a man from Iraq. She tells us her secrets to dealing with his family’s traditions and expectations that differ from her own.

As an added bonus, Sahar gives us some tips on how to maintain a loving, trusting and successful relationship. Now, after 17 years of solely focusing on her marriage and raising her kids, Sahar has decided to add another title to her name: college student.

This is just the first step that Sahar is taking to regain her identify while discovering who she really is. Whether you're a parent, spouse, college student or anything in between, Sahar's wisdom is universal, and you'll surely gain something from this episode!

Elizabeth Reitz and Bleuet Girl - the mama heart that launched a line of undergarments for tween girls

Elizabeth Reitz and Bleuet Girl - the mama heart that launched a line of undergarments for tween girls

Host Ariana Evans has a great conversation with Elizabeth (Liz) Reitz about Liz's new line of tween undergarments called Bleuet. For those of you who, like me, are a bit skeptical about items marketed to such a small slice of the population, you will love her mission, her empowerment of girls on their journey to womanhood, her mama heart that brought her to a place where she wanted to give her own children what they needed, couldn't find it and so made her own way, and truthfully, her product! You can find more information about the upcoming launch of Bleuet, and the amazing resources they have compiled on parenting girls through tween and teen years with compassion, love and bravery on the Bleuet website and on their instagram page.
