    32. From new student to future doctor - an English learner's perspective with Maja Pastuszka

As summer comes to an end, I thought it would be nice to hear an English learners' perspective on what it is like to be a new student in high school. In today's episode, I interview a former student of mine, Maja Pastuszka, about her experience coming to the United States from Poland and what it was like for her to be a new student and English learner simultaneously.

She explains some of the challenges she had to overcome while learning English, the things her teachers did to support her, and some things teachers did that were not so supportive. Maja also gives us insight on some of the cultural differences between attending high school in Poland and in the United States from her English learner's perspective. She explains several aspects of the new culture that she had to adjust to and how even minor cultural differences can be difficult to navigate.

What you will hear from an English Learner’s Perspective

    • What it feels like to be an English Learner and a new high school student in the United States
    • Cultural differences that English Learners have to navigate
    • Some challenges of feeling confident speaking from the perspective of an English Learner
    • Things teachers did that were supportive and not so supportive

¡Sí, se puede! It can be done!

¡Sí, se puede! It can be done!

Need a little inspiration in your life? You'll find it in this episode of Petey Podcast! Elyria High School Senior Dereck Lopez Guzman came to Elyria, Ohio from Puerto Rico just two years ago. He spoke no English, and he and his family arrived just before the pandemic, making it that much harder for him to learn the language. For a teenager entering an American high school for the first time ever, these obstacles could seem insurmountable. Dereck only worked harder, and became more determined than ever to learn. He worked closely with his EL teacher at Elyria High School, Maria Gilmore, and he did something that Gilmore said is rare for students who don't speak the language to do: he signed up to play a sport. It was baseball that caught Dereck's eye. Elyria Baseball Coach Ed Piazza was instantly impressed by Dereck's drive and "coachability." He wasn't afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. Dereck quickly made friends on the team and started picking up the English social language. He earned the team position of pitcher, and he was good.  On June 8, 2021, Dereck will graduate from Elyria High School. His skills on the field were noticed at the college level, and Dereck has committed to play baseball as a pitcher for the University of Pittsburgh in the fall.

It's a great day to be a Pioneer! Thanks for listening. Find Elyria Schools on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube!

    10. Enabling New Americans in the Workforce

GUEST: KATIE NIELSON, PHD, CEO, VOXY ENGEN. By 2024, as baby boomers reach retirement age, 97% of net workforce growth will come from immigrants and their children. Join Amy and her guest Katie Nielson, PhD, Founder and Chief Education Officer of Voxy EnGen, as they talk about enabling these new Americans in the workforce. With access to meaningful and effective language training, immigrants and refugees can get better jobs and more educational opportunities. At the same time, companies that want to build their talent pipeline can make language learning part of a bigger body of skills-based training, drawing upon their existing pool of workers to fill open positions.  By upskilling incumbent employees, companies can save on recruiting costs and provide their employees with opportunities for economic mobility.
