Episode 38 - Sewage Sludge, The Environmental Disaster You Don’t Know About with Dr. David Lewis

Episode 38 - Sewage Sludge, The Environmental Disaster You Don’t Know About with Dr. David Lewis

David L. Lewis, Ph.D., retired from the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development in 2003 as a senior-level (GS-15) Research Microbiologist with 32 years of service. His investigations into public health and environmental problems has been published in Nature, Lancet and other leading scientific journals. This research has prompted the EPA, CDC, FDA and other public health organizations worldwide to upgrade infection-control guidelines and certain environmental policies. His research on adverse health effects associated with land application of treated sewage sludges prompted two hearings by the full Science Committee in the U.S. House of Representative, the passage of the No Fear Act by Congress, and a review of EPA sewage sludge (a.k.a. biosolids) policies by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and new CDC guidelines to protect workers handling biosolids. He was awarded the Science Achievement Award for 2000 by EPA Administrator Carol Browner, and the 2018 Distinguished Service Award by the Sierra Club. His book, Science for Sale: How the U.S. Government Uses Powerful Corporations and Leading Universities to Support Government Policies, Silence Top Scientists, Jeopardize Our Health, and Protect Corporate Profits is largely devoted to efforts within government and academia to downplay adverse health effects caused by land application of sewage sludges and improperly designed dental and medical devices. It refers to research misconduct sanctioned by government, industry and academic institutions, usually to create a body of bogus scientific literature to protect certain politically and economically favorable government policies and industry practices.

All Tequila used to be Mezcal, but now Mezcal is becoming Tequila

All Tequila used to be Mezcal, but now Mezcal is becoming Tequila

Over the last few months there have been a flurry of stories in the news that basically boil down to “celebrities are destroying Mexico by starting tequila brands” and “gringos are destroying Mexico by drinking too much mezcal.” So Chava and I dig into those stories, argue about their relative veracity, and point out all the inaccuracies! It’s an “On the Media” episode of Agave Road Trip!

Be Nosy about the toxic air around you with Dragon's Den contestant Carina Cunha

Be Nosy about the toxic air around you with Dragon's Den contestant Carina Cunha

This week’s guest is Dragon’s Den contestant, Carina Cunha, a behavioural economist & clean-air entrepreneur from Brazil, where she witnessed the devastating environmental effects of pollution. She founded Nosy using cutting edge science and state of the art technology to create a system that protects us from harmful exposure on our city streets.

Carina talks about the debatable benefit of bringing out a specialist mask made to tackle the impact of air pollution, just prior to a global pandemic in which suddenly for the first time in the history of humankind, everyone donned a mask to protect themselves from a hidden virus.

She also questions the accepted view of bringing a minimum viable product to market before it is really tried and tested for consumer appeal. It's been a steep learning curve on many fronts but she holds firm to her vision with courage and resilience.

Carina has dedicated her life and business to combating air pollution, firstly by giving us the protection, and then by creating systems that allow us to monitor our respiratory health so hopefully we can all work to clean up the air in our cities.

Thanks for showing us that when we have a mission for positive change we can move mountains to make it happen.

Building Learning Around the Future We Want with Susan Santone

Building Learning Around the Future We Want with Susan Santone

Ronald Beghetto talks with Susan Santone about two pressing issues that the world is currently facing: environmental issues and social justice, and how those can be remedied through education. Santone shares how she pushes for students to learn more about these issues within the various courses she teaches, including how they can play a role in changing discourses. Santone mentions the necessity of bridging these issues and creating spaces that help people understand their roots, and realize we have more core beliefs in common than we often think. She imagines a future where schools become a true community where mindset shifts are possible, and everyone is involved in creating solutions for these problems.

On this episode of Tech Bites, host Jennifer Leuzzi talks with FoodNiche® Tech Summit Executive Director Julia Olayanju, and Ethan Soloviev, Chief Innovation Officer of HowGood. Interview with Dr. Mark Miller

    Interview with Dr. Mark Miller
There is no doubt that human reliance on fossil fuels has been incredible beneficial for mankind. That said, controversy swirls about this continued reliance on them and their impact on the environment. On this week's episode, Ron Baker and Ed Kless will interview a true expert in this field, Dr. Mark Miller. Mark has enjoyed a long and varied career in the oil and gas industry – petroleum engineer, University of Texas faculty member, worldwide petroleum engineering consultant, and small business owner. He is currently retired and does occasional consulting. Mark is also the 2016 Libertarian Party nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, which as you might guess has nothing to do with railroads. He is the author of the recent book, Oil and Gas and the Texas Railroad Commission: Lessons for Regulating a Free Society.
