Understanding Equine Behaviour For Happier Horses

Understanding Equine Behaviour For Happier Horses

This month we are joined by Gemma Pearson, the Director of Equine Behaviour at
The Horse Trust and Veterinary Liaison Officer for the International Society for
    Equitation Science.

We discuss how Gemma got into equine behaviour and how we can better support
students in regard to behavioural training. Gemma was heavily involved in the BEVA
campaign ‘Don’t Break Your Vet’, so we reflect on its success and why it’s important
to take equine veterinarians' safety seriously.

We dispel some common myths about equine behaviour and treatment, with a
particular focus on the effects of box rest, medications and behavioural motivations.

Gemma shares her knowledge of the three F’s of a horse's physiological needs, the
impact they can have on a horse's stress response and how we define a happy
horse. Lastly, we discuss how to approach tricky clients in difficult situations and the
use of whips in equine sports.

Overcoming Adversity And The Importance Of Professional Boundaries

Overcoming Adversity And The Importance Of Professional Boundaries

In this episode, we learn about two incredible women, Claire Fry and Louise Napier Smith.

Louise shares her incredible journey to becoming a veterinarian against the odds as a teenage mother working in retail. We learn how she overcame her struggles to apply to vet school with limited education and how one particular conversation can
    change your life.

Claire describes how her life experiences during the 2008 recession changed her career trajectory from working for a global insurance company to opening up her own coaching business, Pale Blue Coaching.

In the vet profession, we place a huge emphasis on the continued professional development of our clinical or technical skills, but ultimately, it's a people business. Through coaching techniques, we can all learn who we are and what we need professionally and personally.

Claire and Louise share their techniques for dealing with loneliness at work and the importance of having the right people around you, even if they are not the people
you would necessarily expect help from.

Lastly, we discuss how expectations can vastly differ from reality as a new grad vet and the importance of believing in yourself and your ability to achieve your dreams.

How Can Technology And Data Innovate Equine Welfare?

How Can Technology And Data Innovate Equine Welfare?

Dr Emmanuelle Van Erck, and MSD’s own Equine Marketing & Technical Manager, Blaise Scott Morris, team up to teach us about innovative technology and data-driven equipment that can change the face of equine medicine as we know it.

We ask Emmanuelle how she became interested in the application of technology in her practice and why she is looking at data to move the profession forwards.

We discuss how data is a fantastic tool to improve your horses' training and explore reasons why there has been resistance to using data-driven technology in the equine field, despite the clear evidence for improved welfare in sports.

Our guests explain how this technology can be implemented by general practitioners and clients, and how an app could support the bond between the owner and horse.

We then move on to discuss the technical innovations happening at MSD and, as someone at the forefront of equine innovation, what Blaise’s job really entails on a day-to-day basis.

Blaise explains how MSD’s new thermal microchip is empowering owners whilst improving safety for both vets and horses. By developing innovative products, we can revolutionise the way equine healthcare works.

Make the Most of Your Veterinary Career (While Maybe Still Getting Peed On!) featuring Dr. Mike Bugg

Make the Most of Your Veterinary Career (While Maybe Still Getting Peed On!) featuring Dr. Mike Bugg

If you've ever wondered what the heck you're doing here in vetmed, then this episode is for you. We get to dive deep with veterinarian and author, Dr. Mike Bugg, about his new book, You're Gonna Get Peed On:  How Veterinarians Can Keep Their Dream Job From Becoming a Nightmare While Working Less and Earning More. I can't recommend it highly enough - so make sure to check it out and don't miss the awesome bundle of goodies that he is giving away on The Veterinary Project website until the end of April!
    ...
    About Michael Bugg, DVM

Dr. Michael Bugg is a full-time real estate investor and veterinarian with over a decade of clinical experience in veterinary medicine. After graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, he practiced as a mixed-animal veterinarian before shifting to a small-animal general practice.
Like many of his colleagues, Michael struggled with the unique demands of veterinary clinical practice. Overwhelmed and burned-out, he often felt as if his career was spiraling into a nightmare. He struggled to get ahead financially despite the long hours he spent at the clinic. His entire life was impacted by his career stress—so much so that his wife gave him the moniker Miserable Mike. This, along with working amid the early 2000’s financial crisis and witnessing once-retired veterinarians picking up shifts, motivated Michael to take back control of his life.
In 2012, Michael and his wife, Rosalie, began building their real estate portfolio while working in their respective careers. Eventually, this real estate portfolio allowed Michael to cut back his veterinary hours to part time. In 2018, he decided to take the leap into real estate investing full-time and explore new ways to be a part of the veterinary community.
Michael believes that the greatest way veterinarians can combat burnout is by taking charge of their personal finances and aligning every aspect of their lives with their veterinary vision. He is the cofounder and cohost of The Veterinary Project podcast, which aims to help other veterinarians thrive in their careers and intentionally design more joyful, fulfilling lives.
Michael lives with his wife, Rosalie, daughter, Riley, and son, Ethan, in Saskatoon,
    Saskatchewan, Canada.

Human Behavioural Change And Improving Our Relationships With The Travelling Community

Human Behavioural Change And Improving Our Relationships With The Travelling Community

We are joined by Malcolm Morley,  President of the British Veterinary Association,  and Nicola Berryman, welfare veterinary surgeon at Redwings Horse Sanctuary, to discuss the relationships with the traveller community and address the welfare concerns people have about traveller-owner horses.

We discuss what human behavioural change means and how we can influence
preconceptions about travellers that are commonly held in the veterinary community. By changing the way we present information to our clients, we have an excellent gateway to a good relationship with improved compliance.

Both Nicola and Malcolm have worked at the infamous Appleby Horse Fair. We learn about what part veterinarians play in the fair, if they are welcomed and how welfare standards are being celebrated by everybody involved.

We also address the feelings of uncertainty about starting to work within the
travelling communities and how the veterinary profession can become an ally and a force for real social change.

When Imposter Syndrome Rears Its Ugly Head in Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Katie Ford

When Imposter Syndrome Rears Its Ugly Head in Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Katie Ford

Have you ever felt like you weren't qualified enough to be treating the animal standing in front of you? You are not alone.  Join me as I chat with Dr. Katie Ford about her experiences with imposter syndrome and why they led her to dive deep into  this topic. She is a wealth of information and I cannot thank her enough for sharing what she's learned along her journey.
    ...
    About Dr. Ford
My name is Katie, I live in beautiful Saddleworth just outside Manchester, UK. I'm a happy space-nerd, obsessed with Gary Vaynerchuk and I love racoons. Getting outside walking makes my heart glow, as does spending time with my partner and our two ridiculously fluffy cats. I love the gym, learning mountain biking, fitness and have done the odd mud run. I'm obsessed with gratitude, its anecdotal and more scientifically proven effects. I come up with new and crazy plans on the regular, and I am fascinated with human potential.
I'm passionate about positive mindset techniques and helping others with them too; I trained as a coach, broadband consciousness trainer & cognitive behaviour therapy. I've also been mentored and still am, by one of Bob Proctor's top mindset coaches in the world, who I'm lucky to call a good friend. I'm also a vet, who works in small animal practice and has an advanced certificate in internal medicine, I've been lucky to be doing this for nine years now. ⁣
Five years ago, this would have been a very different introduction. I would have started with "my name is Katie, and I'm a vet." All of my worth was on my job title; this was a double-edged sword. The profession is amazing, but I left all my hobbies behind. I became overworked (on my own terms), feeling like a fraud for any achievement and constantly chasing happiness. I put myself under more stress than clients, colleagues or patients ever did; I chased perfection constantly, staying longer and longer to disaster prevent. My brain looked for things that went wrong, and tortured me, however minuscule they appeared externally. It was mentally and physically unsustainable. I had achievements galore, everything external that I could want... but internally, I was in a civil war. I felt like one person went and achieved all this stuff externally, and then internally, I felt like a worthless fraud.⁣
The good news was that through lots of methods, help from many sources, harnessing my thoughts, and recognising my personal value...my life is totally transformed. I've since started multiple businesses of my own & grown a social media following of over 12,000. You'll also find me speaking about imposter syndrome on many stages from WellVet to the Global Vet Career Summit, a myriad of podcasts, and recently keynote speaker at BVNA. In 2020, I published a book called "To an amazing vet", with versions for vet nurses and receptionists available too.
I feel lucky every day to know the content that I post about, hence I constantly try to share what I have learned, and why I trained in these methods myself. I love to help people to reconnect with themselves, the real them, and that's not always who we think that we are.

Episode description - Savoring the Positive

Focusing on the positives in our life doesn’t mean we turn away from our negative experiences or the challenges we face - rather we take time to honor the good things that exist alongside the challenges - we purposefully give our brains and bodies time to soak up and enjoy the positive experiences and emotions we have.

Recent research on neuroplasticity has shown how our experiences and what we focus our attention on shapes our brain. Our brain is always changing and evolving. We can counter our biologically driven negativity bias and deliberately take in the good.

Purposefully paying attention to our positive experiences and emotions can have clear outcomes on our daily lives both personally and professionally. For example, research has shown that being in a positive mindset as opposed to negative or neutral can support focus and attention, which can impact accuracy and decision making regarding patient care.

"Savoring the Positive" is a practice in which we specifically direct our attention to a positive experience we've had - and really take the time to savor our feelings regarding this experience. This practice can then be applied to moments throughout our day.
