    Being Black Is Dope

    Being Black Is Dope

In the latest episode of Ryan C. Greene's BORN TO BE DOPE!, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Dr. Donald E. Grant Jr., an esteemed leader in the fields of nonprofit, academia, and the private sector. We dove into the critical need for ongoing professional development at the highest levels of leadership, discussing how executive coaching can create environments ripe with creativity and profitability. Dr. Grant and I also explored the essential value of diversity in leadership, sharing insights on how varied perspectives can enrich and strengthen leadership dynamics. Our conversation was not just about the mechanics of leadership but also about the profound impact of embracing diverse backgrounds and ideas to foster more dynamic and effective leadership environments.

Our dialogue took a deeper dive as we tackled the complex relationship between race, mental health, and systemic racism, with Dr. Grant bringing his expert perspective from his work in psychology through his company, Mindful Training Solutions. We confronted the stark realities faced by black and brown boys in foster care and the broader implications of systemic racism on the psychological well-being of the black community. This episode was a powerful mixture of serious discussion, empowerment, and humor, reflecting our shared experiences. We navigated through the nuances of the current political landscape, the colonization of hip hop culture, and the evolving requirements of leadership in a diversifying society. This conversation wasn't just an episode; it was a journey that highlighted the importance of challenging the status quo and the power of our voices in creating a more inclusive, understanding, and empowering future.

Nonprofit Marketing: No job is as glamorous as you think it is (podcast episode #63)

Nonprofit Marketing: No job is as glamorous as you think it is (podcast episode #63)

The How I Made It In Marketing podcast is underwritten by MECLABS Institute, the parent organization of MarketingSherpa. To learn how MECLABS Services can help you get better business results from deeper customer understanding, visit MECLABS.com/results.

When I was in school, I wanted to be a writer.

And then when I started job interviews with ad agencies I thought, ‘Wow! It would be so amazing to be doing this every day.’

Of course, fast forward to a few years into working at an ad agency, and it was a lot easier to focus on the drudgery.

I was reminded of that when I read a podcast guest application with the lesson, ‘No job is as glamorous as you think it is.’

For me personally, now that I am much deeper into my career, my focus is finding – maybe not the glamour, but the fulfillment – of a job where I get to create and help people every day.

However, I thought this lesson would be helpful for anyone starting their career – what may look glamorous on the outside is hard work on the inside. You just see Michael Jordan hit the game winning jumper, you don’t see the relentless practice that got him there.

I discussed the story behind this lesson, along with many more lesson-filled stories, when I talked to Adam Vasallo, Chief Marketing Officer, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (https://www.bbbs.org/).

Vasallo leads a team of nine, along with four marketing agency partners.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. According to its most recent audit, it received $71 million in public support and revenue in its most recent fiscal year.

Unlocking the Power of Relationships: Inspiring marketing stories

In our discussion, Vasallo discussed stories with lessons about what he made in marketing. Here are some lessons that that emerged in our conversation:

Relationships are powerful. Relationships power change.

    • When setting goals, say them out loud and share them externally (and then go exceed them)
    • Start at the end
    • No job is as glamorous as you think it is
    • Always have a point of view
    • Always be confident
    • Follow your passion

    Episode 199-Part 1: Chick-Fil-A; Part 2: Migrant Bussing

    Episode 199-Part 1: Chick-Fil-A; Part 2: Migrant Bussing

In part 1 of this week's episode, we talk about the criticism surrounding Chick-Fil-A going "Woke."   Is Chick-Fil-A  heading down the same road as the Boy Scouts on did-standing firm, but slowly caving to liberal pressure?  From their 2019 announcement that they would no longer donate to any "anti-LGBTQ" groups to their DEI-Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" page on their website which includes "gender identity and gender expression" declaring that DEI is "embedded in everything we do."  While Chick-Fil-A has not gone Bud-light, Target, or full-blown rainbow flags, they appear to be sliding ever so slightly in that direction.  And now a growing number of Christians are turning on them.  Are Christians right to be frustrated with them or are they being hyper-critical?

In part 2, the guys discuss the "controversy" surrounding Republican governors bussing and flying illegal immigrants to Democrat-run cities.  California Governor Gavin Newsom is apparently considering "kidnapping charges"  against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for flying illegal aliens to California.  White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre this week said that doing this is "dangerous", "putting stress on these cities" and " putting people's lives at risk."  Is this dangerous?  Is this the wrong thing to do?

#40. Sobiya Jawaid – Authentic Muslim Leadership Coach

As a British coach, consultant, and public speaker, Sobiya helps people in different ways.  The coaching is one:one support mostly around confidence and mindset to help the client reach her potential.  As a consultant, she works with companies wanting to improve their diversity, equity and inclusion, and as a public speaker, Sobiya draws on both her personal experience as a Muslim woman-of-color in the UK, as well as her professional expertise.  She believes that, as a public figure, her authenticity is paired with healthy boundaries.  This balance allows her to handle difficult situations and continue to support her clients.  Her faith in Sunni Islam and the Sufi teachings support her every day.

    Highlights:
    ·       Being authentic is central to her sense of self and her work.

    ·       Searching for answers led Sobiya to deepen her Islamic faith as a young adult.

    ·       She has experienced discrimination as a visible Muslim woman-of-color, so she empathizes with clients struggling with that challenge.

    ·       Coaching, consulting, and training are each valuable offerings and accomplish different things.

    ·       You can be authentic and have boundaries.  They are not at odds with each other.

How racist is Australia? - Koliko ima rasizma u Australiji?
Racism is unfortunately also present in modern Australian society. It has certainly been present in Australian sports and local communities for a long time. However, a new strategic plan has recently been published which researchers hope will help those experiencing racism get the right help and support.
