      • Meaning: a dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent conditions.

      • Sentence 2: To get a job you need experience but you cannot get experience without getting a job. It's a catch 22.
      • Sentence 3: Jamie felt like she was in a catch 22. If she went to work, she would need to pay for childcare. But if she didn't go back to work, she would have childcare but no money.

      • Sentence 1: Claude Monet was one of the earliest defenders of the Impressionist painters.
      • Sentence 2: Japanese poetry is based on impressionism, which suggests a great deal more than they actually express.
      • Sentence 3: Regarded as the founder of impressionist painting, Claude Monet was born and raised in France.

    2. Genre 
      • Meaning: a style of art and music that involves a particular set of characteristics
      • Sentence 1: I am interested in all genres of art, including ultra-realism and contemporary.
      • Sentence 2: The store carries a wide variety of musical genres.
      • Sentence 3: Country music is the only type of genre I like.

    1. Blank slate 
      • Meaning: something that does not show or express anything; someone or something that is empty or lacks knowledge
      • Sentence 1: I never view my students as blank slates because they enter the classroom with value and insight.
      • Sentence 2: Artists love beginning with a blank slate in order to create a new masterpiece.
      • Sentence 3: When babies are born they begin as blank slates, anxiously waiting to learn from their new environment.
    2. Con artist 
      • Meaning: a person who cheats or tricks others by persuading them to believe something that is not true.
      • Sentence 1: The company was full of con artists. They stole millions of dollars from hard-working people
      • Sentence 2: Do not trust him with your savings, he is a con artist.
      • Sentence 3: He is very handsome but his business is a sham. He is nothing more than a con artist

    Allure
    Meaning: the quality of being powerfully and mysteriously attractive or fascinating

    2. Sentence 2: I love the allure of the ocean waters, so I enjoy spending time at the beach.
    3. Sentence 3: The hungry woman could not resist the allure of the bakery.

    Meaning: If a person is used to something a particular way, it is difficult for them to change.

    1. Sentence 1: Bill is so stubborn and obstinate. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
    2. Sentence 2: My mother refuses to learn how to use Netflix because she is adamant that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
    3. Sentence 3: Although you can't teach an old dog new tricks, you can help them learn by building on their already formed habits.


    Dressed to kill
    Meaning: A person who is dressed very well; dressed well for an occasion

    1. Sentence 1: Jenny met up with her date, dressed to kill.
    2. Sentence 2: For my wedding in June, I want to be dressed to kill.
    3. Sentence 3: After getting his suit freshly tailored, Alan was dressed to kill.

    Warts and all
    Meaning: accepting a person as they are, including all their faults

    1. Sentence 1: My dog Max barks a lot, but I love him warts and all.
    2. Sentence 2: Even though it had scratches, Ryan really enjoyed his record of Nat King Cole, warts and all.
    3. Sentence 3: People need to love themselves and be confident about their status in life, warts and all.

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
    Meaning: what one person finds beautiful or admirable may not appeal to another.

    1. Sentence 1: Everyone wondered what he saw in her, but I guess the saying is true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
    2. Sentence 2: Every parent believes their newborn is beautiful because beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
    3. Sentence 3: Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there are common features that are universally attractive.

    Beauty is only skin deep
    Meaning: a pleasing appearance is not a guide to character; physical beauty can be superficial

    1. Sentence 1: Outer beauty cannot make up for a bad attitude, because beauty is only skin deep.
    2. Sentence 2: Although attractiveness is important, beauty is only skin deep.

    Attachment parenting
    Meaning: a way of caring for children that gives a lot of importance to parents and their baby or small child being physically and emotionally close

    1. Sentence 1: I subscribe to attachment parenting because I never want to be away from my daughter.
    2. Sentence 2: Attachment parenting can eventually lead to helicopter parenting if parents are not emotionally mature.
    3. Sentence 3: Because adoptive parents did not get to experience the 9-month pregnancy, many use attachment parenting techniques such as skin to skin to bond with their adopted child.
