Episode 200: Responding to the Mormon Missionary Message [Part 2] with Cory Miller and Ross Anderson

Recognizing just what the personal struggles are like for LDS missionaries is essential for having fruitful and compassionate dialogue with them. How to cultivate that compassionate understanding is but one of the facets of the new book by former LDS Corey Miller and Ross Anderson, Responding to the Mormon Missionary Message. This is part two of president of Watchman Fellowship James K. Walker's conversation with Corey and Ross. We hope it may serve as an encouragement to you to engage your LDS friends and neighbors with the truth and love of Christ.

Corey Miller, Ph.D., was born in Utah as a seventh-generation Mormon. His ancestor was a polygamist and one of Joseph Smith’s bodyguards. Miller is president and CEO of Ratio Christi (ratiochristi.org), a campus apologetics evangelism ministry on 125 campuses. He has four graduate degrees and taught nearly 100 college courses in philosophy and religion at places such as Purdue and Indiana University. He and his family reside in Indiana.

Ross Anderson was born in Utah and was raised LDS. After leaving Mormonism as a young adult, he earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Ministry degree. Anderson has served as a church planter and pastor in Utah for four decades. He taught at Salt Lake Theological Seminary and served as a denominational church planting director for the region. Ross is currently a teaching pastor at Alpine Church. He and his wife, Sally, are parents to five adult children.

Episode 199: Responding to the Mormon Missionary Message [Part 1] with Cory Miller and Ross Anderson

Episode 199: Responding to the Mormon Missionary Message [Part 1] with Cory Miller and Ross Anderson

A slammed door in the face of Latter-Day Saint missionaries is justification for any Mormon that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the only true church in possession of the only true "restored gospel." But for Christians who extend kindness, compassion, and the love of Christ to missionaries who come to their doorstep, the experience can be life-changing for young LDS missionaries.

This week and next on the Profile, president of Watchman Fellowship James K. Walker sits down with former LDS and authors Corey Miller and Ross Anderson to discuss their new book, Responding to the Mormon Missionary Message. It is a short but helpful and encouraging volume with contributing Christians who are all former Mormon missionaries.

Episode 194: The Book of Mormon and the Gold Plates Controversy [Part 2] with Bill McKeever and James Walker

This week we pick up in part two of our conversation with author and missionary to Latter-Day Saints Bill McKeever. Bill continues to share with the Watchman Fellowship 2023 mission team to Utah more difficulties about the official LDS Church accounts of the gold plates as well as some historical and textual difficulties with the LDS Book of Abraham.

Bill McKeever founded Mormonism Research Ministry in 1979 with the hope of informing the Body of Christ about the differences between Mormonism and Christianity. He has also made an effort to reach out the many individuals who are members of the LDS Church, desiring to show them in gentleness and respect the truth about God’s Word. His writings include In Their own Words: A Collection of Mormon Quotations (Morris Publishing, 2010), Answering Mormons’ Questions: Ready Responses for Inquiring Latter-day Saints (co-authored with Eric Johnson, Kregel, 2013), and Mormonism 101: Examining the Religion of the Latter-day Saints (Baker, 2015).

Episode 193: The Book of Mormon and the Gold Plates Controversy [Part 1] with Bill McKeever and James Walker

Episode 193: The Book of Mormon and the Gold Plates Controversy [Part 1] with Bill McKeever and James Walker

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is founded upon the Book of Mormon. But from where did the Book of Mormon originate? According to Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, the Book of Mormon comes from sacred gold plates he uncovered in 1827 near his home in Manchester, New York. What were these plates? How did Smith obtain them? How did he bring them back to his home? Where are they now? Find out this week and next as the Watchman Fellowship 2023 mission team to Utah sat down with author and missionary to LDS, Bill McKeever, of Mormon Research Ministry (mrm.org) to discuss these and other questions. Bill shares with us the history and stories behind the gold plates.

Bill McKeever founded Mormonism Research Ministry in 1979 with the hope of informing the Body of Christ about the differences between Mormonism and Christianity. The Exmormon Bubble, LGBTQIA+, a convo with James Rhodimer

The Exmormon Bubble, LGBTQIA+, a convo with James Rhodimer

Have you ever had a conversation with a stranger that ignited a sparked your brain? This happened this morning as Jim and I were having breakfast at a cafe in Provo Utah, we happened to have an amazing conversation with someone else who was doing what we were doing, eating. I share that conversation with you today. I invited James to join me today on the podcast because, well, he was there and we ended up having our own several hour conversation that was started by this happenstance meeting today with a stranger. We also discuss what we think is the exmormon echo chamber and the Barbie movie. I would love to hear your thoughts too.

    Triggered Scrupulosity

    Triggered Scrupulosity

Let's dive into religious scrupulosity and the Doug Fabrizio's Radio West Episode last week. Radio West is a Salt Lake City radio/podcast show. I was a bit triggered by a few things said by a guest on last weeks show and I want to talk about it, what it means and what it may mean to you. Working your way out of religious scrupulosity is possible. For many it stops the minute your religious beliefs dissipate, for others it may take years to unravel. Either way, I want to talk about what is happening for those of us who tend towards the scrupulous ways of religiously believing, even when we did not know it was a thing that was happening to and within us.

    The Little You

    The Little You

It is time to connect with the younger you. Your healing is important. When you slow down and take the time to heal the parts of you that need you, you will be better for it. You will not be as triggered as you may currently be in the corners of your life. Let's dive into why this is so important. The younger you is waiting to hear from you.

    Exmormonology ~ The Second Shelf

    Exmormonology ~ The Second Shelf

Experiencing your high demand religion initial shelf break and subsequent faith crisis is so hard! It is emotional, earth shattering and very overwhelming. Just when you think you are starting to get your footing and everything will be okay, you get hit with another shelf break. Deconstructiong mormonism is the first step, quickly you learn that there is another shelf that comes tumbling down. Are you ready for it? Let's dive into this topic this week and talk about how this happens, why this happens and how it is a good thing.

Exmormonology ~ Is Healing An Illusion?

Exmormonology ~ Is Healing An Illusion?

About a month or so ago, a friend, a former Jehovah Witness friend, asked me a really great question, Is Healing An Illusion? I loved this questiong so much that I created a podcast around it. Let's dive into when healing does feel like an illusion and why and what you can do about it so you do not get stuck in the pain of reliving your pain/trauma again and again and again.

There is healing in telling/sharing your story, it can be freeing in just doing that, sharing, telling your story to a therapist or friend. Does your story come out the same way again and again? Do you judge yourself for not having "healed" faster? Is there a time limit on when you are supposed to be healed?

In this episode I deep dive into the concept of healing and what we think it should look like and what healing actually looks like AND how you can be an active participant to your own healing, possibly speeding up the process.

If you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster of emotions all the time or that your healing is taking way too long, then this episode of Exmormonology is a very important one for you to listen to Wildflower.

Exmormonology ~ Bonus ~ The Irreverent Sessions

Exmormonology ~ Bonus ~ The Irreverent Sessions
Finally, Irreverent Episode 13 is ready! So grab a drink or whatever you prefer and hang with us.
Jim and I talk about Praying at Zupas and well just praying anywhere, anytime, temple tchotchke, Mormon women and careers, your "exmo personality," the changes to the For The Strength of The Youth, and so much more. We start out fairly serious and by the end we are straight up giggles, so much so that we just quite literally fade out. A good time was had.

Exmormonology ~ T is for Trigger

Exmormonology ~ T is for Trigger

Another week of healing wildflower. This week's episode is a twofer, maybe a threefer! (is that a word?) A few topics blended together as we head into the holidays. Family. The void. Faith crisis v. awakening. Thoughts and feelings oh my! You have some decisions to make this time of year. Is your brain going off the rails as you brace yourself for family? Should you go? Should you not? Are you ready for a gathering with your mormon family or would some time off be best for you? This week I want to talk about what may be going on in your brain and in your heart as you head into potential family time.

    Exmormonology ~ Breakdown

    Exmormonology ~ Breakdown
Hey all of you faith transition/faith crisis wildflower...has this happened to you? You have been through, what you thought was the worst of your faith crisis and then one day something happens and it brings it all back. You breakdown. All the work you thought you had done feels like it is erased and you find yourself in a heap of tears, yet again. Faith crisis, faith transition, and moving on is a life long process. Learning how to let those days of breakdown be a part of life and not take over is a key to healing. Nothing has gone wrong if you have a breakdown. Tune in this week as I take you through one of my many breakdowns post faith crisis. amyloganlife.com

    Exmormonology ~ Money

    Exmormonology ~ Money

What is your money story? Do you even know that you have one? Have you spent anytime exploring why you think the way you do about money? Or do you just accept the fact (not fact) that you are doomed and it is what it is? One area of your life you may not have connected the dots with, post faith transition, is how your brain thinks about money because of your religious and social conditioning. Today I want to open the door to exploring this topic with you and get to the bottom of why you think the way you to about money. The truth is that you get to think about money any way you want to, so how do YOU think about money?

Exmormonology ~ I Am Back (grounding tool)

Exmormonology ~ I Am Back (grounding tool)

When your thoughts get on the loose, what do you do? Do you believe those thoughts and go down the self loathing rabbit hole? Grounding tools help you get present and not stuck in the past or future. Here is a little tool to help pull you out of that stuck frame of mind. Also, Wildflower Weekend! We had amazing weekend and I want you there next year. When you plan your life out, do you schedule time for your healing and growth? If not, why? Change that up wildflower. Let's go!

    Exmormonology ~ The Bully

    Exmormonology ~ The Bully

Do not underestimate the power of your brain. All healing starts with you, your brain and your emotions. One of meanest things we can do to ourselves is be our own bully. This week I want to talk to you about actual bullying and self bullying. The thoughts going through your brain are optional. What thoughts take center stage of your own brain? Do you speak kind words to yourself or words you would never say to a friend? Do you even notice? I want you to start paying attention. We cannot change anything in our lives if we are completely unaware. Pay attention to your thought soundtrack wildflower.

Episode 141: Part 3 - Brigham Young's great, great granddaughter, Sandra Tanner, and James Walker discuss Mormonism

Episode 141: Part 3 - Brigham Young's great, great granddaughter, Sandra Tanner, and James Walker discuss Mormonism

Racism has been a tragic aspect of our nation's history. But did you know that the Book of Mormon considers dark skin to be a curse? In the Book of Mormon, sections such as Mormon 5:15; 1 Nephi 12:23; 2 Nephi 5:21-22; Alma 3:6; and 2 Nephi 30:6, are clear in what they teach. Dark skin is "loathsome" whereas white or light-skin is "delightsome" and a sign of God's favor. The 1830 version of the Book of Mormon used to read "white and delightsome" (a curious explanation from the LDS Church) but modern versions now say "pure and delightsome." Up until 1978, blacks were not allowed to enter LDS temples or be ordained to the LDS priesthood. But what is the current position of the LDS Church today about racism and dark skin? Is dark skin still a curse?

On part three of our discussion with former Mormon and the great-great granddaughter of Brigham Young, the church's second President and Prophet, James Walker discusses the difficult issue of racism and dark skin in LDS doctrines and what it means for the church today. We will also be featuring a question-and-answer session with our missionary team on this episode you won't want to miss.

Episode 140: Part 2 - Brigham Young's great, great granddaughter, Sandra Tanner, and James Walker discuss Mormonism

Episode 140: Part 2 - Brigham Young's great, great granddaughter, Sandra Tanner, and James Walker discuss Mormonism

In the Book of Mormon, Moroni chapter ten verse 32 says "Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ..."

The words sound familiar, but do Moroni's references to "grace" and "Christ" really speak of the same grace and of the same Christ found in the New Testament? No. Note that Moroni says God's grace is only sufficient if you deny yourself of all ungodliness first. But how is that to be done? According to Romans 7, not even the Apostle Paul could do that!

But according to Moroni, you must deny yourself of all ungodliness before Christ bestows sufficent grace upon you. Then and only then does God's grace "kick in." The second book of Nephi, chapter 25, verse 23 says for example that "it is by grace we are saved" however grace comes only "after all we can do."

Clearly this is not in accordance with what the New Testament teaches. It is indeed by grace we are saved, but not by works of our own. We can't simply do stuff in church to make ourselves right with God. We cannot earn our salvation. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9, NASB).

On part two of our conversation with former LDS Sandra Tanner, we explore in more detail the LDS concept of grace, works, and salvation. We also discuss the problematic LDS scripture known as the Book of Abraham.

Exmormonology ~ What Is The Proper Response? An Essay by Amy Logan

Exmormonology ~ What Is The Proper Response? An Essay by Amy Logan

Drum roll please......It is my 100th Exmormonology Episode! I am excited to share this particular episode with you. I decided to write an essay and read it to you this time around. As exmembers of the church we often hear the same responses to our faith crisis and leaving the church, over and over again. I have seen patterns in the way members of the church respond to us. I will be addressing these repeated responses in this essay. I poised it as a an essay to members of the church, but it is really for you and all the things we want to say when we hear the same rhetoric over and over. I hope it resonates with you wildflower. www.amyloganlife.com

Episode 139: Part 1 - Brigham Young's great, great granddaughter, Sandra Tanner, and James Walker discuss Mormonism

Our very special guest for the next three episodes of Apologetics Profile is Sandra Tanner, former Mormon and the great-great granddaughter of LDS Prophet Brigham Young. Sandra sits down with Watchman Fellowship President James Walker to discuss her and her late husband Jerald's journey out of the LDS church in her new biography Lighthouse - Jerald and Sandra Tanner Despised and Beloved Critics of Mormonism by Ronald V. Huggins.

Sandra was kind and gracious enough to come and speak with our mission team that traveled to Utah this past July to share the gospel with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The full interview was recorded live with our team and part three will feature a question-and-answer session with our missionaries and Sandra.  Here on part one, Sandra describes how she as a Mormon boasted of being related to Brigham Young but had never read any of his most famous sermons.
