Episode 137: Let 'er Rip! Let’s Celebrate Every Holiday Tradition

Episode 137: Let 'er Rip! Let’s Celebrate Every Holiday Tradition
In this episode, Bob’nJoyce challenge the tendency to walk on eggshells when celebrating holiday traditions in the workplace. Too often, people and organization tamp down celebrating a holiday tradition to not offend. In the name of fairness, companies put restrictions on holiday celebrations that stifles inclusiveness and learning. We encourage companies to let er rip and allow employees to openly celebrate their traditions. All of that being said, we struggled with the discomfort of this topic and indeed found ourselves walking on eggshells. Come join us as we lean into our discomfort. Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!

Blended Life EP. 170: Step Parenting Red Flags

Blended Life EP. 170: Step Parenting Red Flags

    Step Parenting Red Flags

On this episode of Blended Life, we break down three of our listener's step parenting experiences and give them our perspective on how to move forward.  From different parenting styles to defining your role and taking responsibility for your choices in what you allow and take on, we push and challenge these three individuals (and hopefully you too) to recognize the red flags of step parenting and do something about it!  We hope this discussion inspires you to feel empowered and to seek out support if you need it.  Step parenting is hard and often renders its participants powerless, frustrated and confused; hopefully we've spoken into this enough this episode to get you thinking differently.  This is our final episode of 2023, and so, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  May you be blessed; we want the best for every blended family out there.  We'll see you all on the flip side in 2024!  Enjoy!

Blended Life EP. 168: Navigating the Coparenting Journey

Two Homes, One Love: Navigating the Coparenting Journey

On this episode of Blended Life, we answer three of our listeners questions:

    1.  How do you deal with secrets in a blended family when one household keeps things from the other?  What about dealing with the stress of knowing information as the step parent that both bio parents are keeping from their children?

    2.  How do you as the new spouse get to be okay with your husband's ex being absolutely cruel to him when he won't even try your advice to stop it?

    3.  How do you handle it when your partner agrees to have scheduled time together with you and then allows their child to hijack that time to connect?

These are big topics that center all around the need to be understood.  We hope you enjoy this episode!  Comment below and let us know one thing you took away from our perspectives addressing these issues.

Blended Life EP. 165: Blending Our Family

On this episode of Blended Life you get a peek into our story as we look back on how we came together blending our family and moving forward. Once the holidays have been tackled, Eric discusses how he knew he was ready to remarry, introduce the kids to one another and move in. He also shares what he would tell someone who is ready to throw in the towel and leave their #blendedfamily. You'll hear both Eric and Julie explore what they each wish they would have done differently on their blended family journey as well as what they feel is the best part of this #lifeexperience and what they are most proud of. The pod ends with the #biggestlessons they have learned so far in their blended family life together. This is a favorite episode of ours, may you be blessed by it! Enjoy!

Denise Hemke, Chief Product Officer at Checkr and former Workday GM, discusses using AI to reduce bias in the hiring process

Anyone who has ever hired a new employee knows how important and broken the background check process is. The experience is awful for candidates and employers. Plus, it's inherently unfair for under-represented and non-traditional candidates. Imagine a world where hiring the best people is easier and faster and all forms of verification data are provided automatically from trusted sources.

Today's guest is making that vision a reality. Denise Hemke is the Chief Product Officer at Checkr, the amazing company making employee screening more fair for everyone. Checkr has raised nearly $700M since its founding in 2014. Denise heads up product management, design, and program management after having served in various leadership roles at Workday including most recently GM for Analytics. Denise is also the San Francisco chapter lead for the excellent organization Products That Count started by friend of the podcast SC Moatti.

    Listen and learn...

    1. How to fix the broken background check process
    2. How to give candidates with non-traditional backgrounds access to the labor force
    3. How technology is making the hiring process more fair and helping workers get paid faster
    4. How to use AI to reduce bias in hiring decisions
    5. How AI used for background checks should be regulated
    6. What Denise learned about building customer communities as a General Manager at Workday

The Riddle - The Book of Judges

The Riddle - The Book of Judges

In this Bible Story, Samson battles with a lion, breaks his vow as a Nazarite, and marries a Philistine woman. His foolishness costs him greatly, and his wife marries another man. This story is inspired by Judges 14. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Judges 14:14 from the King James Version.

Episode 67: Samson, now a grown man, was walking around in the city of Timnah one day. He caught sight of a beautiful woman and immediately went back to his home to ask his parents to fetch her for him as a wife. On the way there a lion attacked Samson, but the Spirit of the Lord was upon him and he defeated the lion with his bare hands. In his pride, this became the perfect excuse to set up a riddle to place a bet and win himself 30 new garments at his wedding party. But we should be careful with what we say or do in moments of pride because just like Samson we might end up losing more than we imagine instead.

    Episode Introduction

Welcome to another episode of "Redefining Society Podcast," where we muse on society and technology at their intersecting point, exploring how one influences and changes the other. Today, we are diving into a topic that is not just crucial but also ethically challenging—how those who work in the tech industry can and should approach ethics in their daily practice.

Our guide in this intellectual journey is Marc Steen, a senior research scientist at TNO in The Netherlands. Marc is an expert in Human-Centred Design and Value-Sensitive Design, with a strong focus on the responsible innovation and applied ethics of technology. He asks the questions that many of us perhaps hesitate to ask—especially when it comes to the ethics behind algorithms and AI systems. With an extensive background in both scholarly and popular writing, Marc aims to push the boundaries of ethical discourse in technology.

Now, why is this important? As we engage more and more with technology, its repercussions echo louder and louder through the hallways of our societal norms, affecting our collective values, freedoms, and even democracy itself. So, when we talk about tech, we're not just talking about a tool or a service; we're discussing a societal force that shapes our daily lives.

Marc's recent book, "Ethics for People Who Work in Tech," serves as a roadmap for professionals in the tech industry. Whether you are a computer scientist, a software developer, or even someone involved in policy-making, this book aims to empower you to think ethically. It provides a practical, three-step iterative approach for integrating ethics into projects and uses four distinct ethical perspectives to evaluate outcomes. The ultimate goal? To design and use technologies that contribute to a just society—a society where people can truly live well together.

Today, we are going to explore these ideas deeply. We'll question the uneasy aspects of technology that most shy away from. We'll explore how we can achieve a state where innovation isn't just about creating the new and the powerful, but also about ensuring fairness, freedom, and communal well-being.

So sit back, and let's embark on this philosophical inquiry into the ethics of tech. Because, if technology is shaping our society, it's our moral imperative to ensure that it shapes it for the better. Stay with us.

    _____________________________

    About the Book

This book is for people who work in the tech industry—computer and data scientists, software developers and engineers, designers, and people in business, marketing or management roles. It is also for people who are involved in the procurement and deployment of advanced applications, algorithms, and AI systems, and in policy making. Together, they create the digital products, services, and systems that shape our societies and daily lives. The book’s aim is to empower people to take responsibility, to ‘upgrade’ their skills for ethical reflection, inquiry, and deliberation. It introduces ethics in an accessible manner with practical examples, outlines of different ethical traditions, and practice-oriented methods

    25th Week of Ordinary Time - Year A - 24 September 2023 - Roman Catholic Liturgical Readings

    25th Week of Ordinary Time - Year A - 24 September 2023 - Roman Catholic Liturgical Readings

Have you ever wondered how God's love can be unconditional, reaching us at any time and stage of life?

In this episode of Your Catholic Corner, we explore the 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time in Year A.

Julie South reminds us that God's love is not bound by the ticking clock or our faithfulness. He loves us equally, no matter when we come to Him.

In the first reading from Isaiah (55: 6-9), we journey back to a time of great historical significance.  Isaiah lived during the rise of the Neo Assyrian Empire, a powerful force that threatened many smaller kingdoms.

This context gives depth to Isaiah's words of hope and comfort for the Jewish people, who were experiencing exile in the desert.  These words remind us that even in our darkest moments, God is with us.

Moving to the New Testament, we explore the Letter to the Philippians (1:20c-24,27a1:20c-24,27a ), written by Paul during his missionary travels.

Philippi, an important Roman colony, became a prominent city within the Roman Empire. Paul established a Christian community there, and his letter to the Philippians carries the message of endurance and unity in the face of challenges. It serves as a testament to the transforming power of God's love in people's lives.

The Gospel reading from Matthew (20:1-16 ) presents us with a parable about workers in a vineyard.

The landowner hires workers throughout the day, from daybreak to the 11th hour. When it's time to pay them, he surprises everyone by giving the same wage, regardless of when they started.

This parable reveals the fairness and generosity of the kingdom of heaven. It challenges our notion of fairness and urges us to focus on our faithfulness rather than comparing ourselves to others.

As we explore these readings, we'll take a closer look at the Catholic Bible itself.

With its 73 different texts, it serves as a rich tapestry of human experiences and cultural perspectives, showcasing both Divine Revelations and human responses.

The Bible contains prayers, songs, anguish, and praise from different people at different times.

We'll discuss how each book presents a unique aspect of God's relationship with humankind and how context is crucial in understanding these portrayals.

Visit our website, yourcatholiccorner.com, to follow along with the readings and explore our previous episodes.

Handicapable Black Woman Episode 58 White Cis Male and Why It's So Hard to Talk to You 2
I talk more about cis white men and the issues of talking to them about issues like police, hair and why I think they feel threatened. Know that we want to talk to you and exchange knowledge and understanding but how can we when at the end of the day and discussion you turn around and blame us? After this episode I might try to see how I can create car air fresheners or ones for the house as well but in part of this particular episode.
