    Our Guests

    Lisa Daniel*

    President & COO, Intechgrate Systems

Family Council Volunteer & 5th Generation Spouse, Lodge Cast Iron

Lisa and her husband Jay live in Sarasota, Florida where they own and operate Intechgrate Systems, an IT services company that they founded together 21 years ago.   Their 3 children have been raised surrounded by both family & business values.  Their youngest daughter is now a college freshman, so Lisa uses her newfound “empty nest time” working on Family Council projects for Lodge Cast Iron.

Lisa joined the Lodge family in 1994 when she married 5th generation family member Jay Daniel. She is very active with the Joseph Lodge Family Council.  The Family Council has spearheaded projects that include a secure family web portal, a digital interactive family tree, family archive videos, quarterly newsletters, online family happy hours and annual family gatherings. The group is currently working on an education plan that will include topics about both the family and the business.

Lisa was born and raised in a small town in Pennsylvania as part of a very large family. She and her 8 siblings are very close and have found ways to stay connected even though they are now very geographically dispersed.  Family values have always been important to Lisa, and she is lucky enough to share those values with Jay’s family.

Lisa is very passionate about open communication between family, celebrating the accomplishments of individual family members, bringing all generations of the family together and capturing family history.

    Jay Daniel*

Jay Daniel is the CEO of Intechgrate Systems, an IT services company that he and his wife Lisa founded together 21 years ago. In 2007 he was elected to the board of another family business, Lodge Manufacturing. The cast iron cookware company was founded in 1896 by Jay’s great, great grandfather, Joseph Lodge.

During his time on the board, Jay has served or chaired each of its committees. He has helped guide the successful completion of several objectives in recent years, including the adoption of an updated Stock Restriction Agreement, introduction of an annual share valuation report, and the establishment of the Joseph Lodge Family Council. Perhaps most importantly, Jay co-chaired the ad-hoc committee which navigated the leadership succession between 4th generation family members and the company’s first non-family CEO and executive team.

Throughout its 125-year history, Lodge has remained committed to its employees and the South Pittsburg, TN community where its foundries are located. The same is true of much younger Intechgrate Systems and its support of the Bradenton & Sarasota, FL community. Jay is proud of what his family and these businesses have accomplished and is enthusiastic about his family’s future.

    13. Is Your Buy Sell Agreement Any Good with Paul Hood & Don Parkhill

Is Your Buy Sell Agreement Any Good?

During this episode we will be focused on the following topics:

    • Horror stories of buy sell agreements that failed the family and the business.
    • Why using valuation formulas is a fool’s errand.
    • 4 of the most significant issues with buy sell agreements, which ones are in yours?
    • The critical steps you must follow before signing a buy sell agreement.
    • Why fundamental fairness is so important in a buy sell agreement?

    This week’s guests:

    Don Parkhill, JD**

    Bluestone Wealth Partners

After graduating from law school in 1983, Don started working and advising business owners when he worked for the “Big Eight” accounting firm, Price Waterhouse. He later joined a law firm in Columbus, Ohio that specialized in working with closely held business owners.

Don was instrumental in helping clients protect and plan for their families, the future of their business interests and the transition of the business and the family wealth. Much of the success of the planning was a result of collaborating with clients’ other advisors, often the financial planner and CPA. This included developing and implementing transition strategies and working with the IRS to obtain private letter rulings.

Don inherited his father’s entrepreneurial spiriand left the practice of law to acquire his own business. He purchased several insurance agencies and later merged those with a larger firm, while continuing to do comprehensive financial planning for business owners.

He joined Lincoln Financial Advisors in 2000 and continues to help successful business owners plan for their future, their family and their legacy. With 35 years of experience and an excellent team, he helps his clients create a financial roadmap distinctive to their vision, by listening and learning what is important to them and who they care about.

Don has been active in numerous civic, philanthropic and professional organizations over his professional career. He has attended many national conferences, including The Institute for Preparing Heirs and the Notre Dame Tax and Estate Planning Institute, all of which discuss ideas to help the successful business owner protect, grow and transition family wealth.

Don and his wife, Sheila, live in Westerville. They have a daughter, Annie, and a son, David. When not working, you may find Don traveling with his family or driving the back roads of Ohio with Sheila.

A 1980 graduate of The Ohio State University, Don received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

    09. The Return on Trust: The Multiplier Effect with Host Michael Palumbos

    09. The Return on Trust: The Multiplier Effect with Host Michael Palumbos

What you’ll learn during this episode:

    • The “unfair” advantage family businesses have over non-family owned competitors
    • What really motivates people?
    • Why family businesses should utilize trust as a leading KPI.
    • The foundation you needed to increase your return on trust.

    This week’s guest:

    Michael Palumbos
Owner, Family Wealth & Legacy, LLC.
Host of The Family Biz Show

Michael Palumbos is a second generation family wealth advisor.  He specializes in family business growth strategy, private wealth and estate planning, and business succession and exit planning for families serious about the long-term success of their business.  He is also an author and the host of the podcast, The Family Biz Show.

Michael believes that business is better when it’s family run.  He also knows that many family businesses are not living up to their potential.  They are surviving, rather than thriving because of unhealthy family dynamics or the lack of proper business management practices.  Typically, there is confusion and a lack of a shared vision between the generations and it doesn’t have to be that way.

His vision is to give these family businesses a chance to succeed at a higher level.  The way he and his team accomplish this is by guiding families through a series of healthy, outside-the-box discussions which work to help the family get in alignment.  Once the family is focused and aligned about how they make decisions together, business strategy and plans for business transition…it helps to reduce stress, friction and clears the way for opportunity and growth.  At the end of the day, it’s all about helping families avoid the shirt-sleeves to shirt-sleeves in three generations syndrome that befalls more than 70% of families.

Michael learned long ago that he couldn’t work for a boss and that he needed to be in control of his own company. It gave him the freedom to do things his own way; and to build a team around him that shared his vision.  Today he challenges the families he serves with innovative and novel ways of looking at their situation.  He pushes people to be their best, innovate and to think differently and dream big.  He isn’t a fit for everyone but if this sounds appealing to you, you’ll love working with his firm, Family Wealth and Legacy.

A graduate of The University of Rochester with a degree in economics, Michael and his wife, Victoria, live in Pittsford and have seven incredible children and one adorable grandson.
