    What is White Jihadism?

In this week’s episode, we investigate the term ‘White Jihad,’ the seemingly paradoxical interaction between white supremacy and Jihadism online. We ask how this loose online community emerged, who it attracts, and what can be done to counter it.

    A Conversation with Mubin Shaikh

In this episode, I speak with Mubin Shaikh. We discuss his journey into and out of Islamist #extremism, his work as an undercover operative in taking down the Toronto 18, and the evolution and growing influence of online extremism and radicalization. We focus on religious and political tribalism as barriers to critical thinking, interpersonal communication, and relationships, and how these issues are made worse with the viral amount of misinformation and disinformation online.

    Thanks, Mubin!

    A Final Lesson

    A Final Lesson

Grapevine goes to the polls in a contentious school board election driven by the fight over the role of religion and LGBTQ inclusion in public schools. As the dust settles, Ren reflects on the impact of her mother’s allegations. And, after months of feeling as if she’s had to erase herself, Em Ramser reclaims her voice.

    Open The Floodgates

    Open The Floodgates

Evangelical activists open a new front in their campaign to impose their version of biblical morality in public schools — at the Texas statehouse. While legislators debate bills requiring the Ten Commandments and banning mention of gender identity in classrooms, three nonbinary students share the trauma they’ve endured at Grapevine High. Meanwhile, a coalition of progressive parents and disillusioned conservatives pledge to retake control of their school system.

    A Raging Fire

    A Raging Fire

Weston Brown, 28, sees a video of his homeschooling mother calling for dozens of books on sexuality and gender to be banned from public schools in another Texas school district. To counter her political activism, Weston publicly shares his story of growing up gay in a fundamentalist Christian family. Feeling pressured by parents and school officials, Em Ramser removes LGBTQ symbols from her classroom and no longer recognizes the teacher she’s become.

Why are brown and Black people supporting the far right?

Why are brown and Black people supporting the far right?

The Republican Party in the United States has moved farther right in recent years. And as it has, you would think racialized Americans might be distancing themselves from it and its policies.

But at last week’s GOP Primary presidential debates, three of the seven people on stage were candidates of colour. Racialized citizens also have been drawn to far-right politics, including key players in the January 6th Capitol attack and recent racist attacks.

Which begs the question: Why are racialized people upholding white supremacist ideologies that work against them?

Daniel Martinez Hosang, a Professor of Ethnicity, Race and Migration and American Studies at Yale University has been exploring this question for a long time. He is the author with Joseph Lowndes of _Producers, Parasites, Patriots, Race, and the New Right Wing Politics of Precarity_. HoSang sat down with us to discuss what he calls the politics of multicultural white supremacy.

    The Seven Mountains

    The Seven Mountains

Conservatives are gaining power in Grapevine, fueled by a once-fringe movement that calls on evangelicals to control the seven key “mountains” of American society — including education. A cellphone company with a Christian nationalist agenda heeds that call and sets its sights on winning school board seats in Grapevine, following an example set a year earlier in the neighboring city of Southlake.

CORRECTION (Oct. 4, 2023, 08:40 p.m. ET): A previous version of this episode misstated the amount of money Patriot Mobile Action spent in school board elections in North Texas in spring 2022. It was nearly $500,000, not $600,000.

The Girl And The English Teacher

The Girl And The English Teacher

A mother named Sharla publicly accuses a high school teacher in Grapevine, Texas, of using a graphic novel called “The Prince and the Dressmaker” to convince her child to change genders. Reporters Mike Hixenbaugh and Antonia Hylton set out to investigate the allegation. Sharla’s child, Ren, and Ren’s English teacher, Em Ramser, tell them a different story.

How the Far-Right hijacked the Wellness Movement w/ Dr. Stephanie Alice Baker

On today's episode, I am joined by Dr. Stephanie Alice Baker, a Senior Lecturer in Sociology from the University of London. We explore the origins of the Wellness Movement in the U.S. and the people who helped develop its foundations. Then explore whether inaccessibility to healthcare puts more people at risk of medical misinformation or whether other factors are at play. Lastly, we look into the types of influencers that have profited off the spread of misinformation and offer some suggestions to differentiate between reliable information and misinformation, at a time when institutional trust is at an all-time low.

    Tradwife, Tradlife

    Tradwife, Tradlife

In the summer of 2022, Hungary's prime minister, Viktor Orban, flew to Texas to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Onstage, his tirades against immigration, gender studies, and LGBTQ rights were met with roars of approval. Orban has made it his mission to codify traditional family values into law—and dismantle democracy in the process. American conservatives are taking note. And paving the way for these extremist policies is a group of social media "momfluencers" touting the glory of traditional family life. Are Moms for Liberty and #tradwives the harbingers of a backslide when it comes to women’s rights...and American democracy?

Tired of turmoil, Kiel residents rebuke far-right school officials

Tired of turmoil, Kiel residents rebuke far-right school officials
In 2022, a small but well-organized Kiel citizens group pushed restrictions on library books, sought to block anti-racism training and helped flip the school board to a majority that criticized efforts for racial equity and LGBTQ rights. Political tensions boiled over when Kiel schools were forced shutter early due to bomb threats aimed at halting a probe into alleged transgender bullying. But moderates have since regained control of the school board, Wisconsin Watch's Mario Koran reports. Concerns that the school board would oust popular Superintendent Brad Ebert spurred residents to pack a Jan. 4 meeting in which they supported Ebert and rebuked school board members. Facing the public outcry, the board unanimously voted to renew Ebert’s contract and two board members abruptly resigned. Originally published on January 24th, 2023.
