    Tanya Blong - Contemporary Artist

    Tanya Blong - Contemporary Artist

Tanya Blong was our very first guest on the Creative Matters podcast and lucky for us she is back 96 episodes later to talk about her artistic journey since March 2021 and how her practice has developed and evolved.

In this episode we start by talking about the Creative Matters podcast, how it has evolved over the last 2 and a half years since I first interviewed Tanya in episode 1 and my goals for the podcast going forward.

Tanya talks about her upcoming solo show State of Leisure at Allpress Studio in Tāmaki Makaurau which opens on November 2nd and runs until December 1st. She shares her ideas around leisure and being idle, the inspiration for her titles, how music she's listening to or what she's reading can influence the narratives that develop in her paintings. She describes her approach to colour and the 'haloing' process in her paintings and how she almost wants to "halo the halo" and we discuss ways Tanya has got through creative block and grown the business side of her art practice.

What Does The Bible Say About Being Literal Or Figurative?

What Does The Bible Say About Being Literal Or Figurative?

In this episode, Arnie and Fred discuss the literal and figurative  language found in the Bible. Paul mentions having used a figure of speech in the Corinthian letter.  This discussion is important because some Bible students think everything the Scriptures say is literal.  Others think the entire Bible is figurative and everything symbolizes something else.  Neither view is correct. We are reminded that the Bible is verbally inspired and that Jesus treated accounts of certain events as historically accurate and literal. We note some of those events. We note that Jesus and His apostles understood some historical and literal Bible accounts to contain figurative language.  We talk about the times Jesus and His apostles used figurative language themselves. We are reminded that in our daily conversations we do the same. There are ways that we can distinguish figurative language from that which is literal and we note them. Take about 30 minutes to listen in on our conversation and have your Bible handy to verify what we are saying.

    Pablo de Gortari In Conversation

    Pablo de Gortari In Conversation

Pablo de Gortari is a flamboyant and gregarious figurative contemporary portrait painter from Mexico City.

By mixing skills from illustration, animation and painting, his work combines the spontaneity of sketches with the delicacy of painting.

Art for Pablo has always been a way to escape reality and his images and palettes are strongly influenced by fantasy and mythical elements.

The characterisation of each portrait is Pablo's main focus; showcasing emotions and state of mind as each figurative work exists almost within their own unique narrative.  Inspired by Spanish portraiture from the 1600s Pablo brings his unique surrealist contemporary interpretation.

In our conversation, Pablo reflects how life now, being based in a studio in Stockholm, has impacted his work, technique and aesthetic.

Follow Pablo on Instagram and view his works in progress and studio images on his website.

View Pablo de Gortari's artist page over on the Nordic Art Agency website where you can view the works discussed, Leonor, Pernilla with the blue hair and Paolo, the young boy with his sea pony.
    .
On our next episode, we shall be in conversation with abstract artist Chelsea Davine.  Chelsea has been working from her Barcelona studio for 20 years creating paintings with her own decorative style and unique use of material.
