Haunted Mansion (2015) - A Church Retreat at the Haunted Mansion (We Are Contractually Obligated to Say This Has No Correlation With The Walt Disney Corporation Or It's Affiliates and Partners)

Haunted Mansion (2015) - A Church Retreat at the Haunted Mansion (We Are Contractually Obligated to Say This Has No Correlation With The Walt Disney Corporation Or It's Affiliates and Partners)
    PARTY PLEASER:

Melvin is joined by Shirleon yet again to discuss Haunted Mansion (2015), a movie that has literally no correlation to The Haunted Mansion or Haunted Mansion (2023)! Yes, this movie was picked solely because it shares a name with the other movies. We think that's kind of funny! But don't worry; there are more similarities between this haunted mansion and the Disney Haunted Mansion, too! Tune in to find out!

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 40-minutes discussing watching habits, from things we enjoy the most, things we emotionally connect with, and things we avoid or are learning we dislike (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • The available video quality for the film is low-res and includes frequent stuttering that impacts the viewing experience. Melvin wonders if it was merely cheaper to license and distribute a lower quality version from a foreign market.
    • The lead character Ella is a particularly strong female lead, despite also being "The Special".
    • Haunted Mansion (2015) is a Filipino movie and both Melvin & Shirleon reflected on how the language of the film would alternate between Filipino and English.
    • Melvin & Shirleon discuss the aesthetics of this haunted mansion. Unlike both Disney movies, this mansion is a real location.
    • The two discuss a translation in the subtitles that left both of them shocked, but learn it stands for a ghost-type from the Philippines.
    • Melvin likes Teen Drama movies, but the film is titled and primarily tagged as a horror movie, and he laments the films general lack of horror during its first hour.
    • Melvin realizes that note-taking for a movie is a great way to find scenes that can easily be cut.
    • It takes until 01:07:00 before the movie introduces the threat of violence, and it both works for and against the film as a whole.

    Visions of the Filipina bride

    Visions of the Filipina bride

Growing up in the 1990s, Alan Weedon always wondered why he was one of many kids born to an Australian father and Filipina mother. It was a pattern replicated in the various backyard barbecues and play dates of his youth — where Filipino men were far and few between.

Following the tragic death of his mother Jesusita in 2022, Alan, in his grief, decided to trace his Mum's story of coming to Australia. In doing so, he unravelled a great southern migration, where tens of thousands of Filipinas migrated to Australia via marriage in the 80s and 90s.

But when they landed in Australia, these Filipina brides — many of who had migrated on their own accord — were often subject to racist and sexist stereotypes. Most persistent was the 'mail order bride' tag, a stereotype that stuck and leached into newspapers and popular culture – and which still lingers on today.

10 international singers on performing with The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square during general conference

For the first time in its 175-year history, participants living outside the United States joined the 360-voice Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square during the 193rd Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The singers, part of a pilot program for the choir, sang with the storied choir in the Saturday morning session and both Sunday sessions of general conference on April 1 and 2, 2023. The 10 singers from six countries — Brazil, Mexico, Ghana, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan — join this episode of the Church News podcast to report on their visit to Salt Lake City and their experiences of testifying of Christ through music.

The 10 international singers are Sundae Mae Indino of Cagayan de Oro, Philippines; Ronald Baa of Cagayan de Oro, Philippines; Álvaro Jorge Martins of Natal, Brazil; Rodrigo Domaredzky of Curitiba, Brazil; Thalita De Carvalho of São Paulo, Brazil; Tubo-Oreriba Joseph Elisha of Accra, Ghana; Jonathan How of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Denisse Elorza Avalos of Tijuana, Mexico; Georgina Montemayor Wong of Monterrey, Mexico; and Pei-Shan Chung (Kylie Zhong) of Taipei, Taiwan.
