    The Kikay Chat Halloween Playlist

    The Kikay Chat Halloween Playlist

If Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands & JK Rowling's Harry Potter hosted a Halloween Masquerade, their playlist would probably sound something like this. Whether you're sipping on a pumpkin spiced latte, cozying up to a thrilling book, or heading over to a Halloween bash, we invite you to step into a world full of magic: where wizards, witches, goblins, & ghouls exist...and where you can party like it's 1999. Rest In Peace Hagrid.

    Ligo & Lakers

Today we share childhood stories that include memorable baon of Ligo sardines as well as our undying love of the Lakers during the 80s. We also kick off our celebration of Filipino American Her-story month during the month of October by honoring our mother.

3 Generations of Women, 1 Leche Flan with Giselle Krachenfels

3 Generations of Women, 1 Leche Flan with Giselle Krachenfels

Leche flan became Giselle Krachenfels’ favorite dessert both because it was delicious and because it connected her with Filipino culture. Having mixed heritage, Giselle felt the need to prove her Filipino identity and leche flan became a way to do just that. Except that she couldn’t get the recipe right. This is a story about how one dessert helped three generations of women navigate new surroundings and a sense of self.

Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay (Featuring Pamela)

Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay (Featuring Pamela)

Welcome to Book Bites! Hosted by teen services librarian Josh Sanchez, each episode will feature a guest who will talk about one of their favorite YA or teen books. We'll make recommendations for similar books, as well as movies, music--even food. New episodes are released on the first Tuesday of every month!

This month, we're celebrating Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage month with LBPL staff member, writer, and youth advocate Pamela, who recommended a book by Filipino-American author Randy Ribay titled Patron Saints of Nothing. The book is a heartfelt but raw look at the violent war on drugs still ongoing in the Philippines and a Filipino-American teen's search for answers about the murder of his cousin.

In this episode, we touch on themes of identity and belonging as a result of the diaspora, the social and educational pressures put on young people, and the effects of social media on activist movements.
