    Chill Filtering: Threat or Menace

    Chill Filtering: Threat or Menace

Almost all alcohol goes through some kind of filtering, and chill filtering has been one of those methods for … well, forever. But recently, some folks have been flagging this as an unacceptable practice. And if it’s considered unacceptable, you know I want to give it a try. It’s an anything-but-chill episode of Agave Road Trip!

Featuring Linda Sullivan, of seynasecreto, and Carlos Soto, CEO & Founder of Nosotros Life and Spirits.

    Don’t Let Your Attention Slide

    Don’t Let Your Attention Slide

Welcome to Navigate the Day, where we explore different ways to navigate life's challenges and inspire you to live your best life. Today's episode is all about attention and the power it holds. As Epictetus once said, "when you let your attention slide for a bit, don't think you will get back a grip on it whenever you wish," and he was absolutely right. Our attention is precious, and once we lose it, it's not always easy to regain it.

In today's journal prompt, we ask ourselves, "how long can I go without letting my attention slide?" It's a question that requires us to be honest with ourselves and take a hard look at our habits and tendencies. As we delve into this prompt, we realize that our attention is not just about focusing on the task at hand, but also about choosing what we want to see and what we want to ignore. Attention is a powerful tool that can be used to shape our reality and determine our future.

It's easy to get caught up in the noise and distractions of everyday life, but we must remember that the power of attention lies within us. We have the ability to choose what we pay attention to, and by doing so, we can create a more fulfilling and purposeful life. We may not always be free from error, but we can strive to minimize mistakes by always being mindful and attentive.

As we reflect on this episode, we feel inspired and motivated to take control of our attention and use it to our advantage. We hope that you, too, feel empowered to make the most of your attention and navigate each day with purpose and intention. So don't let your attention slide, because you never know what opportunities and possibilities may pass you by. Stay focused, stay present, and navigate the day with confidence and joy!

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!

5-13-22 Friday FARcast -- Can Biochar Save The Planet With Jenna Shaputis?

Biochar is the byproduct of burning wood and essentially turning it into carbon/coal, think "Mesquite" charcoal, but it's good for even more than that.  It's a tremendous fertilizer and filtration agent and anyone can make it. While chemical fertilizers are sidelined by the current administration, Biochar could be the key for small and mid-sized farmers looking for something else.

    Why walking is underrated

    Why walking is underrated

Walking is a brilliant form of exercise but it’s often overlooked in favour of running or yoga or HIIT workouts.

Because we are exercise sloths and busy women, we’re always looking for quick and easy ways to get moving.

If you’re trying to get fit and healthy, walking is one of the most accessible types of exercise you can do.

Gab and Sarah look at some good quality research which shows why walking is really, really good for you.

Pilates: does it live up to the hype?

Pilates: does it live up to the hype?

Have you ever tried Pilates? It’s a popular form of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century.

It’s now a worldwide fitness trend and it’s often used as a form of rehabilitation for lower back pain or injury, and recovery after childbirth.

Gab and Sarah look at what Pilates actually involves and if it lives up to the hype.

Plus, another batshit crazy fitness trend, this time involving Kate Hudson and a bag full of water.

Want to exercise more? Try this

How many times have you set yourself a big fitness goal? Did you achieve it?

Research shows that having really specific and fixed goals can actually be a deterrent rather than a motivator.

In recent years there’s been a shift away from the traditional method of goal-setting known as SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timebound); towards a more flexible approach.

Gab and Sarah explain the idea behind ‘open goals’, and how this is proving to be a more effective way of achieving a fitness target.

You’ll also hear about the world record for planking, and a review of Maddie Lymburner’s Low Impact Full Body HIIT workout.

Why aren’t I getting any fitter?

Why aren’t I getting any fitter?

No matter how hard you try, it can often feel like your fitness isn’t improving.

It’s so disappointing when you’ve been doing the same workouts over and over and you don’t see any progress in your strength, or number of reps, or cardiovascular fitness.

Even when you’ve been consistent with your exercise, sometimes it feels like you’ve hit a wall and you can’t get past it.

So what do you do when your progress has stalled?

Gab and Sarah explain how to reframe the way you measure progress, and look for the many ways you are making headway (even when it doesn’t feel like it).

Have you ever had a “runner’s high”?

Have you ever had a “runner’s high”?

This episode we’re talking endocannabinoids and sports bras (the two are not related!).

For years it was thought that the “runner's high” was due to the release of endorphins.

Endorphins are chemicals that are produced by the body to relieve stress and pain, and they work on the opioid receptors in the brain (the same receptors that opiate drugs like morphine act upon).

An increasing body of evidence suggests that this so-called “runner's high” is not due to the release of endorphins but is instead due to the release of another type of neurochemical called endocannabinoids.

And yes, the word endocannabinoid sounds a lot like the word cannabis, and in the same way that endorphins act upon the opiate receptors in the brain, endocannabinoids act upon the same cannabinoid pathways as cannabis.

Sarah explains why it’s theoretically possible to get a little “high” on exercise, and Gab has some sports bra recommendations for you to check out.

    Create Creativity

    Create Creativity
Creating a space for creativity to flourish on your team is intentional. The sparks of imagination fly because you, the leader, manage for this opportunity. Shutting down creativity reduces your chances of getting new, diverse ideas in the future. Why does this matter? Because companies rarely survive on one great idea. Worse yet, companies rarely survive with one great idea person. You already know diversity matters when you hire. That diverse population comes with a variety of backgrounds that lead to new solutions and new ideas. Encourage it. Welcome variations. Imagination is knowledge and you can harness that power.

Does listening to music improve exercise?

Does listening to music improve exercise?

Do you listen to music when you exercise? For Gab and Sarah, a banging playlist is essential. Sometimes the only way to stay motivated during a workout is to turn up the volume and focus on the tunes. Gab and Sarah look at a new study which explains a link between music and exercise, and a beautiful email from a WLY mum.

It's time to stop the negative self-talk

How often do you criticise yourself? When it comes to exercise, we can be way too hard on ourselves. We might believe things like we’re not ‘sporty’, or that we don't have any athletic ability. Most of these ‘beliefs’ come from things people have said to us and have no basis in reality. Gab and Sarah tackle negative self-talk and why what you say to yourself matters.

    35. Self-care isn't selfish. Listener Q&A and Getting Kids on Board with Boundaries

    35. Self-care isn't selfish. Listener Q&A and Getting Kids on Board with Boundaries

Are you operating from empty? Do you think it is selfish to dedicate TIME to replenish YOU?             Click here to read Val's blog post, "Depleted? Mom, It's not selfish to replenish."     The first half of this episode is a vulnerable topic for Val as it includes her road back to health and she reminds moms that when you are depleted, it often leads to defeated. It is not selfish to take care of yourself! In fact, neglecting YOU is harmful to your family. We cannot replenish others when we are depleted.
We moms often neglect ourselves emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Let's talk about the road back to healthy.
Then the second half of this episode is a listener Q&A where we  focus on the four key elements of communicating boundaries to kids effectively and getting them on board with taking the necessary growth steps to increase their freedoms.
    1. Empathy – see it from their perspective.  Have compassion on their PERCEPTION of what’s going on and VERBALIZE your empathy.  2. Humility - even parents need humility and need to give mutual respect 3. Consistent and Clear boundaries and expectations - are the lines constantly changing or difficult for your child to identify? 4. Visionary Standard - avoid  negative labels, your words should point them toward who they are capable of becoming * you believe they are more than their current  behavior and weaknesses.

Boundaries increase with level of *Responsibility *Wisdom *Honesty "As they display these characteristics in an area, that they are faithful with the amount of freedom they’re at, then you can begin considering increasing the freedom.  COMMUNICATE all of this to them all along the way, so they understand that their freedom is in direct proportion to their level of *Responsibility *Wisdom and *Honesty"
"When our kids have constant access to social media, it means that Peers & Strangers are given an influencing-role & constant access to our kids’ heart & mind.   Intentional parents need to have *reoccurring conversation *family agreement that includes actions to take, actions to avoid, clear boundaries, and how to maintain those boundaries *accountability *filtering"
