Kelvin Crombie (Part 2 of 2). Holocaust simplified. Is that possible?

Kelvin Crombie (Part 2 of 2). Holocaust simplified. Is that possible?

We finish our interview with Kelvin Crombie from West Australia and his passion and studies in The Holocaust. He tells amazing stories of Jewish people who survived the horrors of that terror and kept or found their faith. And the 7 phases of Hitler's plan to exterminate and rid the world, or at least his world, of Jewish people. Including the Madagascar Plan. I'd never heard of that one!

The historical marker includes Cyprus' queen, the cotton gin's invention and the Salvation Army's movement to the US.

327 - Josef Mengele: Nazi Angel of Death (Happy Holidays)

327 - Josef Mengele: Nazi Angel of Death (Happy Holidays)

Josef Mengele was a great guy! Just very misunderstood. Wait, no. I'm thinking of someone else. Josef Mengele was a MONSTER. His complete and total lack of empathy for anyone not a member of Hitler's nonsensical racial purity dream boggles the mind. He saw his experimental patients at the Auschwitz  concentration camp as nothing more than lab rats who happened to kind of look human. His experiments were cruel and misguided. And mostly dealt with identical twins. Child twins. And saddest of all - his cruelty did not stand out amongst his peers. He was but one of many, many monsters. A product of Nazi brainwashing that had gone on for so long, reality had been inverted. Evil was good, and good was evil in many ways. We look at all of this today. And sorry for the timing! It was a voted-in topic, and is probably about the LEAST festive topic we could Suck this week. But - I did find it fascinating and hope you do too. And next week will be lighter - I promise! :) Hail Nimrod and Happy Holidays!

297 - The Holocaust 2 of 2: Fallout, Atonement, and Denial

297 - The Holocaust 2 of 2: Fallout, Atonement, and Denial

Apologies for my weak voice today! Remnant of a second bout with Covid. Had to drink several cups of hot tea and honey, and take numerous breaks to at least sound somewhat understandable.

Today, we look into how Germany dealt with the Holocaust once it was over. And how occupying powers, including the US and the Soviet Union, dealt with it as well. Who do you punish when millions have been complicit in some way(s) in committing one of the greatest atrocities in human history? We also look at holocaust denial. What evidence can deniers possibly point to to prove their claims that the holocaust either never happened, or didn't happen to the degree that mainstream (actual) historian's claim?

171 - The Warsaw Ghetto - A Tale of Nazi Resistance

171 - The Warsaw Ghetto - A Tale of Nazi Resistance

Ummm.... more Nazis this week. Not EXACTLY a normal holiday choice, but what's normal on Timesuck? Today we look at the Warsaw Ghetto - the largest concentration of European Jews was in Poland, and more Polish Jews lived in Warsaw than in any other city - forced to live in a "ghetto," a walled off city-within-a-city. And the Warsaw ghetto residents were treated horribly. They were shot, starved, and forced to live in squalor. They were taken by train to death camps. And they also fought back in the best example of Jewish resistance in WW2 history. Lot of sadness but also some inspiration in today's brave tale. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Against All Odds: Born in Mauthausen with Eva Clarke -- Holocaust Living History Workshop -- The Library Channel

Against All Odds: Born in Mauthausen with Eva Clarke -- Holocaust Living History Workshop -- The Library Channel
What does it mean to be born in a concentration camp, arguably one of the most inhospitable places on earth? Eva Clarke was one of three “miracle babies” who saw the light of day in KZ Mauthausen in Austria. Nine days after her birth, the Second World War ended. As a newborn, Eva’s chances of survival were extremely slim; against all odds, she lived, making her and her mother Anka the only survivors of their extended family. In 1948, they emigrated from Prague to the UK and settled in Cardiff, Wales. Eva regularly addresses audiences, and her remarkable story has been featured in the British and American media. She and her mother are among the protagonists of Wendy Holden’s book Born Survivors: Three Young Mothers and their Extraordinary Story of Courage, Defiance, and Hope (Harper, 2015). Series: "Library Channel" [Humanities] [Show ID: 32849]

Growing Up in the Shadow of the Holocaust -- Holocaust Living History Workshop -- The Library Channel

Growing Up in the Shadow of the Holocaust -- Holocaust Living History Workshop -- The Library Channel
Since the defeat of the Nazis in WWII, Germans have been forced to confront their “unmasterable past.” What was it like to grow up in a divided country burdened with the legacy of genocide? How does one deal with the knowledge of one’s people’s complicity in mass murder, and how does this knowledge affect one’s identity? Primary witnesses of both German and Jewish backgrounds explore answers to these questions. Panelists include Frank Biess, Deborah Hertz, Margrit Frolich and Brian Schottlaender of UC San Diego. Series: "Library Channel" [Public Affairs] [Humanities] [Show ID: 29486]

Limited Appeal - The Chinese Solution

Limited Appeal - The Chinese Solution
After a seemingly interminable and trivial preamble, we discuss the development of the biggest supercomputer in China (we think it's China, anyway). It's possible the computer's function is to censor discussion of Chinese secrets, or offensive dialog, in which case we probably will set a few flags. So, to make amends, Warren suggests we make deliberately inaccurate and offensive statements that we can then rebuke ourselves. Do we manage? Have a listen to found out. If you work for the Chinese secret service, and wish to poison us by email, here's our address: maskedman@limitedappeal.net. Theme music courtesy of Mugison and Ipecac Recordings.
