Balancing the Risks: Examining the $7 Trillion AI Funding Request and its Implications

Balancing the Risks: Examining the $7 Trillion AI Funding Request and its Implications
Good morning from OWITH.ai: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in AI and tech world. Today, we'll be discussing an article that presents seven reasons why the world should reject Sam Altman's request for $7 trillion to fund his artificial intelligence (AI) project. The first reason mentioned in the article is the enormous amount of energy that would be required to run AI infrastructure at full capacity. This would have significant environmental implications, which is a concern that cannot be ignored.Moving on to the second reason, we find that the strain on natural resources, particularly water consumption, has already been observed in previous AI projects. This raises concerns about sustainability and the potential impact on our already limited resources. The third reason presented is the economic resources that would be needed to fund such a project. The amount far exceeds what is currently spent on schools or addressing world hunger, highlighting the magnitude of the investment being proposed.Next, we come to the fourth reason, which is the financial risk associated with such a large investment. A failure in this project could have devastating effects on the global economy, which is a risk that should not be taken lightly.Moving on to the fifth reason, we learn about the negative impact on human intellectual capital. AI projects often require exemptions from copyright, which could harm artists and creators. This raises important questions about the balance between technological advancement and protecting human creativity. The sixth reason mentioned in the article is the negative externalities that AI projects often do not account for. These can include disinformation and cybercrimes, which have become increasingly prevalent in our digital age. It is crucial to address these issues before embarking on such a massive investment in AI.Lastly, the article argues that rushing to invest such a large sum of money into AI is premature. There are still many unknowns and risks associated with this technology that need to be carefully considered. The author suggests that safety and innovation should be prioritized in AI development instead of reckless expansionism. In conclusion, the article sheds light on the potential dangers and drawbacks of investing such a large amount of money into AI projects without thorough consideration. It is important to weigh the potential benefits against the risks and ensure that the development of AI is done responsibly.

    Episode Notes

In this episode of Redefining Cybersecurity, hosted by Sean Martin, listeners are invited to explore the complex landscape of cyber risk governance. John Sapp, a seasoned professional in risk management, emphasizes the importance of defining cyber risk from the perspective of various executives. The CIO, CFO, COO, and general counsel each own different aspects of risk within an organization, and understanding their perspectives is key to effective risk management.

The conversation takes an intriguing turn as John introduces the concept of approaching cyber risk governance as a product. This involves understanding the desired outcomes, defining the requirements, and creating personas for different stakeholders. The aim is to develop a common pane of glass, a unified perspective through which each persona can access near real-time information to make informed decisions.

John also underscores the importance of presenting information to various stakeholders, including the board and cyber insurance carriers, in a way that demonstrates the strength of the organization's cyber risk program. This approach has tangible benefits, such as a reduction in cyber insurance premiums based on the strength of the cyber risk program.

The episode concludes with a discussion on the importance of collective decision-making in managing cyber risk. John emphasizes that it's not about presenting some information and giving somebody responsibility to make a decision, but rather about presenting information in different ways to all the different personas to spur a conversation so that the team can determine the best path forward.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding how to approach cyber risk governance in a way that is both effective and efficient. It provides valuable insights into how to manage risk in an ever-evolving digital world.

066 - WTF happened to SVB, with Victor Horcasitas

A couple of weeks ago, shit hit the fan. A bank run on Silicon Valley Bank had to be intervened because hundreds of companies pulled their funds out of this popular bank.

The US 16th largest bank, very popular among tech companies and startups, had to be sold because it became insolvent due to a series of bad decisions and their accumulated derivates.

We bring in our good friend Victor Horcasitas, CEO at Metropolitan Magazine and President of the American Society of Barcelona, to discuss the happenings and their consequences: how it all happened, what kind of regulations are in place, the decisions of former administrations that might've had an impact in this particular situation, predictions of the future, how to diversify banking risk for companies, and much more.

Grab a very cold clara and join us in this friendly conversation with Victor and Àlex!

Climate Risk, Financial Returns - Ep112: Bob Litterman

Climate Risk, Financial Returns - Ep112: Bob Litterman

This week on Cleaning Up, Michael hosts Bob Litterman, founding partner at Kepos Capital and Chairman of the Kepos Capital Risk Committee. Litterman spent 23 years at Goldman Sachs, during which time he became a partner and established himself as an outstanding authority on financial risk. Since co-founding Kepos and joining the boards of the World Wildlife Fund, Ceres and the Climate Leadership Council, among others, he has become a leading voice on climate policy and risk as it relates to climate change and the transition.

From this unique vantage, Litterman is acutely aware of the time-sensitivity of climate risk:

“We have to create incentives globally to reduce emissions, and we have to do it very quickly. One thing I like to tell people is when you're managing risk, time is a scarce resource. If we have enough time, we can solve almost anything. When you're managing risk and you run out of time, a risk management problem becomes a catastrophe.”

    Guest Bio:

Prior to founding Kepos Capital, Litterman had a 23-year career at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he served in research, risk management, investments and thought leadership roles. Litterman became a partner at Goldman Sachs and head of the firm-wide risk function in 1994, and head of the Quantitative Resources Group in 1998. Litterman is the co-developer of the Black-Litterman Global Asset Allocation Model, a key tool in investment management.

Litterman serves on a number of boards, including the Niskanen Centre, Ceres, World Wildlife Fund, and the Climate Leadership Council, where he serves as co-chair of the Board. Litterman also chairs the CFTC Climate-Related Market Risk Subcommittee, which published its report, Managing Climate Risk in the U.S. Financial System in September 2020.

Litterman holds a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Minnesota, and a B.S. in Human Biology from Stanford University. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Litterman taught at MIT and worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

Climate impacts profits: How businesses should report climate risk

Climate impacts profits: How businesses should report climate risk

For businesses, a changing climate is not just about worsening weather patterns. Businesses must be prepared for what is likely to be an era of rapidly accelerating change to many dimensions of their operations, including changes in shareholder expectations, supply chains, multi-dimensional risks to physical assets, and impacts on labor, among others.

A critical dimension to preparing for these changes is risk assessment and reporting. The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) was established in 2015 to provide businesses with guidance on how to disclose both financial risks and opportunities that are associated with our changing climate.

Emily Wasley runs WSP USA's Corporate Climate Resilience practice. We spoke with Emily to gain a better understanding of the TCFD guidelines, and some perspective on the growing interest from businesses seeking to become resilient to a changing climate.

    Climate change litigation

Climate change is increasingly being raised in courtrooms around the world. The latest was brought by eight Australian school students and a nun who argued that the government owed a duty of care to protect children from the harmful effects of climate change. As journalist Greg Muller reports, climate change is now seen as a legal and financial risk as well as an environmental one.
