58. Plein Air Knife Painting and Fearlessly Creating Public Art: Maggie Capettini
I met Maggie Capettini several years ago after both of us were selected for a public art event. I was captivated by her work and am so glad to have her on the show to hear her story and learn more about her creative process and business practices.

If you had asked 5-year-old Capettini what she wanted to be when she grew up, her answer would have been a mashup: drive a school bus, work at a restaurant, be a ballerina, and be an artist. Only one of those four career goals has come true. Invested in the tradition of plein air painting, Capettini renders landscapes and architecture on location. Studio works, still lifes, and figure studies round out Capettini’s portfolio. She paints from life as often as possible. Using painting knives on panel, she applies and removes paint, creating a textured surface revealing layers of color. Her works embody an energy that draw the viewer in. Raised and currently residing in the Chicagoland area, Capettini holds a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and a Master of Arts in Teaching. She has studied at Palette and Chisel in Chicago. Capettini has won awards for her paintings, and her works are held in museum collections in Warrenville and West Chicago, Illinois, as well as private collections in the United States, Japan, Germany, and Canada.

Man of Many Talents, Melvin Thambi
#74 Graphic designer/fine artist Melvin Thambi joins me to talk about pursuing design and fine arts, how he got his work to be exhibited, how hearing “no” led to him achieving his dream and what advice he has for non-U.S. designers looking to get U.S clients.
Esao Andrews | Haunted Universe
Esao Andrews is a great friend of mine, one of my all time favorite artists and responsible for every Circa Survive album cover to date. Beyond his massive fine art career as an oil painter he has painted murals all over the world, done 30+ covers for the Vertigo Comic Book series "House Of Mystery", as well as dozens of designs for skateboard companies Deathwish & Baker.
Esao is one of the most soft spoken and humble people that I know. While talking about himself for a couple of hours is probably not at the top of his favorite things to do, this conversation was an absolute joy and I think you will be able to tell by the end how much fun we were having.
We get into his journey from art school to happenstance illustrator to fine artist, how our paths crossed in collaboration, tons of wonderful stories involving his craft, some ghost stories and a lot more.
This was recorded October 28th, 2019. One of the strangest and spookiest things that I have ever encountered in my creative work occurred during the recording & editing of this podcast. It happens and I detail it in an overdub. The overdub then expands upon the mystery. It begins around the 1:08:00 mark.
