    Episode Notes

Could humanity be the first intelligent civilization to emerge in our galaxy? Could that be why, when we look up at the night sky, we are confronted with a "Great Silence"? This is the essence of the "Firstborn Hypothesis," a proposed resolution to Enrico Fermi's time-honored question ("Where is Everybody?")

Psalm 97: Worship the Most High Firstborn

Psalm 97: Worship the Most High Firstborn

    Psalm 97 (NASB95)

Our hosts consider why the author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 97 while talking about the firstborn. Admittedly, it may be a little complex to modern readers, but it is precisely how ancient readers, especially among the Hebrews, read their Scriptures.

How Will Jesus Use His Power? – Firstborn E9

How Will Jesus Use His Power? – Firstborn E9

Under levitical law, touching anyone unclean would make you unclean too. But when Jesus touches people who are unclean, they get healed and become clean instead––it’s like his holiness is contagious. In this episode, Tim and Jon talk about the way Jesus uses his power and authority as the cosmic firstborn.

    God's Firstborn Son – Firstborn E8

    God's Firstborn Son – Firstborn E8

The authors of the gospel accounts in the Bible—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—regularly refer to Jesus as the Son of God, a title that’s connected to the theme of the firstborn. In this episode, Tim and Jon explore what it means that Jesus is God’s Son through the stories of his baptism and testing in the wilderness. Listen in to find out how Jesus uses his power in a way we’ve never seen another human do before.

Hannah’s Poem and Power Reversals – Firstborn E6

Hannah was an oppressed woman, scorned by her husband’s rival wife because of her barrenness. But the way she prayed and trusted Yahweh through this hardship became a remarkable example of how God works through the lowly to subvert human notions of power and status. In this episode, join Tim and Jon as they trace the theme of the firstborn in the scroll of Samuel.

Power Grabs and Patriarchs – Firstborn E4

Early in the story of the Bible, God chooses the family of Abraham, his son Isaac, and Isaac’s son Jacob as his chosen representatives to bless other peoples. But these families are full of the same rivalry, envy, and division present in any other family. What is God doing with these less-than-ideal candidates? Join Tim and Jon as they trace the theme of the firstborn in the narratives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Rivalry Among Brothers – Firstborn E3

Rivalry Among Brothers – Firstborn E3

Only a few pages into the story of the Bible, the story starts to get really bleak. Cain kills his brother Abel, Cain’s descendants become famous murderers, and Noah’s youngest son violates his father and mother. And all of it happens because humans decide that power is worth the cost of harming others. In this episode, Tim and Jon discuss the dark side of human nature and the God who favors the powerless—the people who choose to trust him for blessing and exaltation.

Seizing vs. Receiving Power – Firstborn E2

Seizing vs. Receiving Power – Firstborn E2

It’s not explicitly stated, but the theme of the firstborn first appears in the opening narratives of the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis 1 and 2, Yahweh elevates humans, the latecomers of creation, to rule the land. In Genesis 3, a snake, who is some kind of spiritual being, tricks the humans despite their authority as God’s image bearers. This story is echoed in other accounts of sibling rivalry that continue throughout the Hebrew Bible. Join Tim and Jon as they discuss the land rulers and sky rulers and the theme of the firstborn in Genesis 1-3.

God's Response to Human Power Structures – Firstborn E1

God's Response to Human Power Structures – Firstborn E1

In ancient Near Eastern societies, firstborn sons were prized above all other children and inherited special privileges and authority simply because of their birth order. In this episode, Tim and Jon start a new theme study covering the theme of the firstborn. Spoiler alert: The God of the Bible opposes lots of human ideas about power, and the privilege of the firstborn is no exception. Again and again, we’ll see Yahweh picking younger siblings and people we wouldn’t expect to be his chosen representatives.

Today's Bible verse is Exodus 12:12 from the King James Version.

Episode 37: Though God’s plagues against Pharaoh continued, he continued to harden his heart like stone. Though his servants and wise men begged him to let Israel go; he refused. So God sent a final warning among the people, that whoever fears God should mark the doorposts of their homes with the blood of a lamb, for at midnight God would visit all who ignored His warning and take their firstborn in return for the cruelty Egypt has shown against His firstborn, Israel.

Today's Bible verse is Exodus 9:14 from the King James Version.

    Amanda + Juniper

    Amanda + Juniper

This is truly one of the most honest, transparent, and open conversations I've had on this podcast.  Amanda's sweet Juniper died and was stillborn on August 9, 2018.  After her death, Amanda started to get answers as to what happened.  It was found that Junie had a small placenta, and it was from this realization that Amanda became an advocate for stopping preventable stillbirths through measuring the placenta.  Amanda's signature dark humor makes her such a light and someone that is the true meaning of grieving how YOU want to grieve and never apologizing for it.  Her honest and raw approach to mothering her two living babies while also mothering Junie, gives hope that we can move forward with our precious babies always in mind.  We laugh in this episode, a lot LOL.  Which is OK to do! We discuss dark humor, placenta measuring, trusting professionals, the rude shit people do, baby daddy, the least worst things people should do, and so much more.  Buckle up, this is what it sounds like to be a loss momma.

For info on measuring the placenta, go to MeasurethePlacenta.org

**NOTE: this is always an open platform from the viewpoint of the guest and does not always reflect my beliefs. As always do your own research & use your own judgement on what's best for you. I am not a doctor or a therapist. I am just a real life loss mom describing her experiences with life after loss. This is my real life, and I'm putting it out there so you feel less alone. ***
