Misguided Fishing Ep. 3.6: Fly Fishing on the OBX

Misguided Fishing Ep. 3.6: Fly Fishing on the OBX

Misguided Fishing welcomes Capt Harry Merkalis.  The guy has created a niche on the Outer Banks of NC. He has proven that guiding fly fishers to skinny water species such as reds and specks can be done in one of the windiest places on the East Coast. Harry guides trips out of motorized kayaks, on foot wading, and out of his flats skiff.  One of the most interesting and entertaining guests we have had on Misguided Fishing. Harry is going hard at the age of 65 and is proving that an old dog can teach new tricks.

Foam is Home: Fly Fishing the Kootenays with Paige Johnstone

Foam is Home: Fly Fishing the Kootenays with Paige Johnstone

Here is a delightful episode from a day spent fishing in the East Kootenays of British Columbia with Paige Johnstone and Lisa Tink.

This starts as a lovely day on a small stream. It was so nice to be back in BC and spend time with friends. I had planned this episode immediately after I met Paige last summer while fishing with Curtis Hall. The little stream we fished is in Paige's backyard. She grew up here, long before she became a fly fisher.

Paige has been fishing for three years now. Her attraction to fly fishing though goes back to when she was a young girl fishing with her father and watching folks fly casting elsewhere. Then she met Curtis, a professional fly fishing guide, and the rest is history. She is now very accomplished for someone relatively new to the sport. She talks like a guide and acts like one too. I'm not surprised though. Paige reminds me of me...she wants to figure something out and then does it. Unlike me, however, she does things very well indeed!

As we fished up and down the shady little stream, she offered advice to Lisa and showed off a few of her special fishing spots. It was simply wonderful. Then the conversation turned towards some issues that she's faced in her fly fishing journey. As a teacher, she is good at verbalizing her thoughts, and it was really interesting to listen to her and Lisa chat about issues that newcomers to the lifestyle might face. I love this episode, and I hope you will too!

"Flying" Fish on the Snake River

"Flying" Fish on the Snake River

Michelle and I decided at the last moment to take a quick trip up to Grand Teton National Park in late September. We usually visit in the summer, and went up to Glacier National Park instead. Early fall in Wyoming was beautiful. Michelle did a lot of fly fishing on the Snake River, and on the last day we decided to hire a local fishing guide, Ed Dutilly. We had quite the adventure, including a "flying" fish on the trip.

42 Advanced Fly Fishing Lessons with Curtis Hall

42 Advanced Fly Fishing Lessons with Curtis Hall

Curtis Hall is a professional fly fishing guide on the world-famous Elk River near Fernie, British Columbia. In August I was able to spend two days fishing with him near his home. This episode, perhaps more than any others I've produced, is truly educational. Curtis and I really got into the technicalities of fly fishing for Westslope Cutthroat Trout. I was challenged constantly with Curtis' coaching and experience. It was fascinating for me to learn so much about the things I didn't know I didn't know when it came to fly fishing.

I did my best in this episode to take you with Curtis and me out onto the rivers that we explored on the trip. We talk about fly fishing strategies and techniques, and we catch a bunch of fish! If you are interested in gleaning some tips on ways to improve your fly fishing, then this is the episode for you.

    JASON WILHELM - TALKING BARRA

    JASON WILHELM - TALKING BARRA

Barramundi are truly one of Australia's most iconic native species and there wouldn't be too many anglers who don't have a magic metre barra on their bucket list. Jason Wilhelm guided hundreds of clients to achieve that goal while running his Barra Madness charter business in central Queensland during the 2000s. Jase concentrated mainly on the impoundments such as Lake Awoonga and Lake Monduran. As water levels in these dams drop to those similar to that before the flood events of 2011, Jason predicts the barramundi fishing in these impoundments will be outstanding over coming years. As knowledge doesn't date Jason has created an online masterclass to teach anglers the intricacies of understanding this often frustrating target species and the techniques to confidently catch them with regularity. We were lucky enough to fish with Jase and successfully put his methods into practice and took the opportunity to ask him a bunch of questions i'm sure you guys want answered. Enjoy!

One-half photographic artistry, one-half basic knowledge of the English language, and one more gratuitous half fart jokes (just for good measure), SCOF is the most unique and community-driven fishing publication out there."

Ep. 6 | From Australia to Arkansas With Steve Dally

Ep. 6 | From Australia to Arkansas With Steve Dally

Scotty and Steve Talk Mentorship In Fly Fishing, Streamer Lovefest, Guiding, and More!

Steve Dally was raised on Australia’s island state of Tasmania, in Aussie fly fishing terms the equivalent of being raised in Montana. But he'll tell you he squandered his youth in the salt, surfing, diving, and fishing for all manner of species. Finally convinced in his late 20s to grasp a fly rod, an obsession was born. He cut his teeth on the challenging wild brown trout and rainbows of Tasmania’s wilderness lakes and streams before moving to the US in December 2000. A former journalist, Steve spent 3 years in the US as a traveling fly fishing writer and photographer, a job which saw him land, fly rod and camera in hand in Montana, Wyoming, Alaska twice, Baja, New York, Michigan, New Mexico, Idaho and finally Arkansas.

The experience in tackling North American conditions was invaluable as he fished the mayfly hatches of the Henrys Fork, Firehole and Au Sable, caddis hatches on the Big Wood, chuck and ducked beads on the Kenai, stripped streamers on the Beaverhead, splatted hoppers on Silver Creek, found himself tied to 40lb King Salmon on the Ayakulik, and roosterfish and snook in Mexico.

His articles and photographs have appeared in numerous publications and websites, including Fly Fisherman and Anglers Journal, and he remains a masthead columnist and regular contributor on tactics, destinations and fly tying with Australia and New Zealand’s premier fly fishing magazine FlyLife.

After flirting with guiding, and several job offers on his travels, Steve started guiding out of the Beaver Dam store, in '04 and ran the fly fishing department, building his knowledge of the White River system from Beaver to Norfork and a substantial and loyal guide clientele, before joining the Mountain River Fly Shop in Cotter in ‘07.

Despite a serious and extensive fly fishing resume, Steve’s laid-back Aussie accent and attitude, sense of humor and self-deprecating wit are appreciated by beginners and experienced fly fishers alike. His mantra is that fly fishing is meant to be fun whether you are catching the biggest fish of your life, tangling around the rod tip and everything in between.
