Flannery O'Connor and the Prophetic Imagination with Jessica Hooten Wilson

Flannery O'Connor and the Prophetic Imagination with Jessica Hooten Wilson

Why would a Christian author immerse her stories in darkness? Why would she use violent imagery that directly relates to Christianity, race, class, disability, and illness? And how can this darkness guide us toward the importance of love in the flesh, of personal connection and vulnerability? In this conversation, Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson, author of Flannery O’Connor’s Why Do the Heathen Rage? A Behind-the-Scenes Look at a Work in Progress, and Amy Julia Becker explore:

    • Flannery O'Connor's unique perspective on faith and darkness
    • The portrayal of disability in O’Connor’s stories
    • Love in the abstract versus love in the flesh
    • Challenges of publishing an unfinished manuscript
    • How the prophetic imagination in O'Connor's work confronts the dominant culture's illusions about the good life

    Page Fright | Harry Bruce

This episode of Books for Men features Page Fright by Harry Bruce. A fun read about the fetishes and foibles of famous writers. The book will remind you of the many (often conflicting) ways writers write. Where to write? When to write? What tools to use? How fast to write? Alcohol? Good luck charms? And, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Listen for more!

    S05E06: Everything That Rises

    S05E06: Everything That Rises
It's DQ's directorial debut, a TNT movie called Everything That Rises -- and while there's no discernible connection to Flannery O'Connor, the flick's surprisingly good. Okay, the transfer we watched was very bad, and the dialogue's laconic sarcasm was a little TOO uniform across characters, but between Harve Presnell; an unnecessary but amusing barroom brawl; and Quaid being too busy directing to overact, the thing won us over. It's Hallmark meets Cormac McCarthy, plus the debut of Ask A Horse Girl, so quit Loaf-ing and listen to an all-new Quaid In Full.
