I know - this episode is a long one! I tried to cut as much as I could that didn't feel relevant to tell this tale. I really did! There's just so much juicy stuff. So many strange, STRANGE details. Lori evolved, over the course of her adult life, from a manipulative person who was also very religious, into a murderous, manipulative person who became, essentially, the co-leader of a cult when she met her fifth and final husband, Chad Daybell. Chad had, over many years as an LDS author, created a fictional, apocalyptic world that he then later said was actually a real world based on his many prophetic visions of the future. Visions he was able to have thanks largely to two near death experiences. In Chad's vision of the world, there are lightworkers and zombies - angels and demons - continually battling for supremacy as we accelerate quickly into the End Times. And he and Lori were to gather 144,000 of God's most faithful and lead them into battle. And along the way, spells must be cast, zombies must be slayed, and, well, it's all just so insane. In this episode of Building Bridges with Greg and Jill, they interview Tonia Tewell, Executive Director of Holding Out Help. The discussion reveals isolation, abuse, lack of education, and criminal activity. Tonia details how her organization has been able to help and the numerous people involved compassionately giving of their time, money and resources. Recently FLDS leaders have given new demands of the FLDS people that could possibly end the lives of many if law enforcement does not step in. It's a fascinating and inspiring interview.
Ashlen Hilliard is a cult intervention specialist helping families with loved ones in cultic or high-control groups or relationships through her organization, People Leave Cults.
She completed her MSc in the Psychology of Coercive Control in early 2022 and conducted research on the relationship between reproductive coercion, psychologically abusive environments, and the extent of group identity in a sample of those who have left cultic groups.
Ashlen has previous experience working for multiple non-profit settings in the field of cult recovery. Most recently, this has included working as Director of Events for the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA). During that time, she facilitated workshops, webinars, and conferences for those in touch with multiple aspects of the cult phenomenon including therapists, former members, legal professionals, media representatives, academics, and others. Prior to her work with ICSA, she worked as a case manager in Salt Lake City, Utah, for the non-profit Holding Out Help, where she was involved on the front lines of helping individuals leaving diverse polygamist communities out West.
She currently enjoys living in Portland, Oregon where she is a volunteer co-organizer of the Spiritual Abuse Forum for Education (SAFE) Meetup for those who have left or are considering leaving high-demand religious groups in the local community.

In this week's Apologetics Profile, James Walker interviews Addam Swapp, a former member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who became a Fundamentalist Mormon practicing polygamy. Addam was involved in the bombing of a Mormon chapel followed by a 13-day standoff and shootout with law enforcement in which one officer was fatally shot and killed.
In federal prison, Addam found himself on the floor of a dirty cell, broken and defeated. At this time of his deepest despair, he called out to Jesus.
