Stephen Sondheim is the composer and lyricist of some of the most well-regarded musical theatre ever made. We delve into his life, work and impact on the form.

We hear archival interviews with Sondheim himself and are joined by performer Philip Quast, author Joanne Gordon (Art Isn't Easy: The Theatre of Stephen Sondheim), director of several Sondheim productions, Dean Bryant, and Sonya Suares, founding artistic director of the Sondheim repertory company Watch This.

It's time to clear the docket! This week, we're tackling disputes about the theater, and we have two very special expert witnesses: the award-winning duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez! Between the two of them, they've made some of the most memorable musical theater works of the modern era: Frozen, The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q and so much more. They've come by to lend their expertise to settle disputes about the ending of Pippin, post-show etiquette in community theater, and – of course – lots and lots of Sondheim.

For the last 30 years, Janie Dee has cemented herself as one of the greatest leading ladies to ever grace the stage. From musicals to plays to cabarets and concerts, Janie has done it all.  In this special interview, she looks back on her career and how her early struggles have led her to see each new job opportunity as a "big present". The conversation starts with her talking about her relationship with Theatre Royal, Bath where she worked with the Peter Hall Company on a number of productions and most recently returned to the Somerset theatre for An Hour and a Half Late. We also hear Janie look back on some recent musical theatre highlights such as A Little Night Music,  The Boy Friend and Follies where she earned her most recent Olivier award nomination. Janie Dee is herself a two time Olivier Award winner, winning for the National Theatre's legendary production of Carousel and also for originating the role of Jacie in Alan Ayckbourn's Comic Potential.

Today, Janie's passion seems to lie mostly with sustainability and climate action. In 2020, she organised the London Climate Change Festival which saw scientists and artists come together to discuss solutions to ongoing climate crisis. The festival led to the Song for Nature concert that was broadcast around the world, bringing together world class performers onto the London Coliseum stage with the English National Opera orchestra and chorus. In our interview, Janie voices her concerns at how slowly theatres are adapting to achieve carbon neutrality and even suggests she might stop performing in a bid further reduce her own carbon footprint. We hear her talk about the ongoing impact humans are having on the planet with landfill sites forming lakes and the impact cruise ships are having on marine life.

Ultimately, we're treated to a fascinating interview with Janie reflecting on her rich career as well as on the real-life climate crisis. Recently turning 60, we can expect Janie to continue working in some capacity and we look forward to seeing what she does next.

Danny Burstein is a seven- time Tony Award nominee for The Drowsy Chaperone, South Pacific, Follies, Golden Boy, Cabaret, and Fiddler on the Roof, who won a Best Supporting Actor in a Musical Tony in 2021 for his performance as Harold Zidler in the stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge! He has also won two Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, and received three Grammy Award nominations. His other Broadway credits include The Seagull, Saint Joan, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. On television, Burstein appeared as different characters in six episodes of the original NBC drama series Law & Order and recurred as Lolly Steinman on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. We vow to Take Action by contacting our local, state, and federal Representatives to pass climate legislation and make sure that they hear our voices directly.

We are encouraged to Leave No Trace.  When we make a mess, we clean it up. We take responsibility for the impact that we make. ​

We laugh, we cry, we sing, we do skits, and we have dance parties!

We are reminded that Earth is the only planet in our galaxy that can support life. Scientists estimate that Earth is home to about 300,000 plant species, over 600,000 species of fungi, and about ten million animal species. We are made aware that we’re the life of the party!
