Ep 385: The Bob's Burgers Movie

If this episode was on the menu at Bob's Burgers it might be called the Emails and Podcastarami special because that's just what it is.

How successfully do Bob and family make the leap from TV to cinema? Who is the main character and is being joyous enough in the cynical self aware phase of the American blue collar family sitcom? More importantly, are there enough butts to keep Tina happy?

Karina Arroyave (aka "Jamey Farrell") - "That Was The First Time I Worked With Kiefer!"
A real thrill to talk to Karina about her role on 24, as well as Orange Is The New Black, Dangerous Minds, Crash and Lean On Me, and the movie set where she met Kiefer Sutherland for the first time!

When Canada got cable TV, she was on my screen several times a day, and you can find her now on NBC's The Blacklist.

Karina brought her A-Game to the podcast, and we are honored that we spent the time catching up with her.

Gregory Itzin (aka "President Charles Logan") - "Service Is A Part Of My Legacy, Shall We Say."

Gregory Itzin (aka "President Charles Logan") - "Service Is A Part Of My Legacy, Shall We Say."
I even got dressed up for our first President to join us on the podcast.

Greg Itzin was such an incredible guest, sharing stories of emulating JFK and his regular golf game with another "24" President! We speculated on the current whereabouts of Charles Logan and if he could return a la Regarding Henry, a film title that eluded me at the time.

Based on the advance response, a lot of fans are looking forward to this one.

Kiefer Sutherland (aka "Jack Bauer") - "The More We Express Ourselves, We Realize We Have More In Common Than We Thought."
When I started this podcast, it was a distant dream that, one day, Kiefer Sutherland could be a guest. Truly distant.

That day is here, thanks to the persistence of my co-host, Justin, and the graciousness of our guest and his team! I purposely dropped this episode between Canada Day and the 4th of July - Jack Bauer is a true American Hero, portrayed by a Canadian born in England. How cool is that?

Kiefer entered the room ready to engage, and we had a great time talking 24. We discussed why 24 is too good an idea to not continue, his unique relationship with Jack Bauer, and the real story behind the still-shocking Season 1 finale.

His passion for storytelling infuses his acting, his music and his life. It was a thrill to revisit his show at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI, this time from his perspective.

"And now we’re watching the death of Network Television! Go figure." was a standout line, for sure.

    Enjoy!

Elisha Cuthbert (aka "Kim Bauer") - "You Felt Like You Were Going To The Movie Theatre Every Week!"
To be fair, all of our guests have been amazing! They are all my favorite, for different reasons. However...

...I am such a massive fan of both 24 and Happy Endings, that I was especially excited to talk both with today's guest, Elisha Cuthbert! And she was so much fun to talk to, once we moved past her initial skepticism that Kim could ever be a fan favorite.

We cover the nail-biting way that the number 24 showed up right in time for Elisha, the coolest place she ever found a 24 box set, and how Kiefer almost (and should have) played her dad on TV again!

Elisha also gives great insight into the 24 Phone Rule, moving from action/drama to comedy/improv, almost doubling Kim's kill count and shooting scenes with "The" Dennis Hopper.

"You see Jack's heart through Kim" is a standout line from our conversation.

Daniel Bess (aka "Rick Allen") - "Nobody’s One Thing! Even The Bad Guy, Somebody Loves Them..."
You met him in the Pilot and you liked him. At first. Then you didn't. Then maybe you did again.

Daniel Bess talks with us about adjusting from theatre to TV, blowing up a van and shooting a machine gun for the first time on 24, and how his experiences have led him to pursue a Masters in Applied Psychology to become a therapist! So many correlations between the therapy profession and acting.

His analytical skills and training smoothly brought us to a discussion of how we define "Success" and the healthiness of redefining that word for ourselves, whatever our profession. He also shared the joy of acting with his wife in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and the thrill of casting against type.

Daniel was a fantastic guest! Be sure to check out his music on Spotify:

Rodney Charters ("24" Cinematographer) - "Thank God For The Commercials. This Show Is Gonna Give Me A Heart Attack!"
If you appreciate the look and feel of 24, you have Rodney Charters to thank! And we did.

Rodney gives us real insight into the behind-the-scenes decisions that made 24 so distinct and the reason it continues to look impressive as technology evolves. He talks about directing Kiefer, building his team, his unique role as overviewer and the fluidity of motion in a real-time environment.

He also recalls a tense stand-off with the powers that be, how his work on M.A.N.T.I.S. was ahead of its time, and his favorite thing to blow up on the 24 set!

Penny Johnson Jerald (aka "Sherry Palmer") - "You Are Running For The President Of The United States, David. A Black Man!”
We had the privilege of talking to the first main character to appear in the pilot of "24", and it was a thrill

Penny spoke about the absolute necessity and the importance of the historic moment that "24" occupied, life imitating art, her intentional overuse of "David" and her theories about where Sherry is now. She also shared great stories about working with the writers and producers (fans of "The Larry Sanders Show") to make the show more authentic and what it is like to again work with Jon Cassar, this time on "The Orville"!

And I got to geek out about Larry Sanders, yet another 24-Star Trek connection and JR Ewing? How cool is that?

Sarah Clarke (aka "Nina Myers") - "Secrets Are Always The Greatest Asset To An Actor"
Make no mistake - everything has led up to this!

Guest Sarah Clarke shares her belief that Nina was clearly misunderstood, the experience of being a hero in Japan, and of course, how her life (and Xander's life) was considerably more changed than yours or mine, no matter how many times you've binged or streamed it!

And for the record, Nina got her tan in the prison yard, if anybody asks...

Louis Lombardi (aka "Edgar Stiles") - "They Should Do An Edgar-Chloe Spinoff! We Live In Queens, She's My Sister & She Yells At Me All Day!"
Oh, Edgar, how we miss thee.

We talk to the actor who clearly made an impact on the 24 Universe, because his character's death still comes up in conversation on a weekly basis. Louis talks with us about how he landed the role of Edgar Stiles, choosing his gigs carefully and the importance of the right pizza in the life of a family!

Carlo Rota (aka "Morris O'Brian") - "The Characters, That I Usually Play, Scream 'Please Dress Me Nicely'."
This guy is so much fun, we have to have him back, if only to talk more about Yakavetta!

Carlo has this rare ability to bring both gravitas and levity to every role he takes. and it was a thrill to talk about walking the fine line between Little Mosque and 24, The Boondock Saints, becoming Anton LaVey and his new projects with Barry Pepper, Nazneen Contractor, Colm Feore, Yannick Bisson (and great clothes).

Sarah Wynter (aka "Kate Warner") - "You Know, You Never Forget Your First 'Shrink To A Box'."
On "24", Sarah Wynter portrayed Kate Warner, or as we like to call her, "the good Warner Daughter"!

Sarah was a thrill to talk to, confiding in us about the "24" memorabilia she refuses to let go, working with Kiefer and then becoming Keitha, press events with the Guh-ver-nator, the importance of the Pivot and more.

We look forward to sharing news about the film that she produced, A Mouthful Of Air, featuring Amanda Seyfried, Finn Wittrock and Paul Giamatti!

The only person Jack Bauer can trust 'right now', Tony Almeida, is on the podcast!

Guest Carlos Bernard graciously sits down with "24 Universe" Acting Director Aaron Michael Waldo and me to talk about so many things.

We cover his long history of directing theatre, TV and film, the deliberate presence of the Chicago Cubs on 24, the legendary Cigar Room and his amazing powers of persuasion that allowed Tony to, literally, Live Another Day .

Howard Gordon (24 Showrunner, The X-Files, Homeland) - "What Is This Thing? Can We Really Do It?"
It is an honor and a thrill to welcome 24 Showrunner, Author and Writer Howard Gordon to the podcast! Justin has known Howard for years, and I've always been a fan of his work, which includes The X-Files, Homeland, Tyrant and Awake, a personal favorite. He is a firm believer in what he calls "the Pulse of 24", and coincidentally, so are we.

Howard is an open book about the origins of 24 and the actor who almost played Jack Bauer , how he became a 3rd partner on the project and even lets us speak to Jeffrey Glaser, an early champion of the show during his time at Fox TV!

We are humbled that he took the time to hang out with us and share some amazing insights into the past, present and future of Jack Bauer and 24.
