Episode 85: Frank Dux gets his ass beat in Cassadaga

We don't like to brag or anything, but the people behind Madness Madness have accomplished some pretty incredible feats of combat prowess, to the point where several hit movies have been based on our exploits: Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Jurassic World, The Lion King, The Avengers, Furious 7, Top Gun: Maverick, Frozen II, and of course Barbie. That’s more than $27 billion at the box office just from the ones we can name off the tops of our heads, so honestly we’ve got nothing to learn from Frank Dux, a fight choreographer and semi-professional liar whose “life story,” the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme breakout “Bloodsport,” pulled in a mere puff of dust to the tune of $11.8 million worldwide, which I don’t even think is enough money to wipe your ass with these days.

Nonetheless we’ll hear about this valor-stealing boomer schmuck, then imagine him dropped into Cassadaga, Florida (formerly New York), the fortune-telling capital of the world, mouthing off to a series of increasingly irritable palm readers until the ghost of Patrick Swayze manifests and Road House roundhouses him so hard he lands in a different ZIP code from his medals of honor, which turn out to be made of cardboard and cellophane anyway. Join us, won’t you?

    Bloodsport (1988) - REVIEW

    Bloodsport (1988) - REVIEW

Episode 7 - Jean Claude Van Damme burst into the mainstream after the 1988 martial arts movie - Bloodsport. Directed by Newt Arnold, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Donald Gibb and Leah Ayres. The film was released in the United States on February 5, 1988. Bloodsport is based on the allegedly true story of Frank Dux, an American martial artist who fought in underground Kumite matches in Hong Kong.
Van Damme plays the US Army Captain Frank Dux, who has been trained since childhood in Ninjitsu by Senzo Tanaka ( Roy Chiao). Dux has entered into an illegal underground martial arts tournament in Hong Kong called the Kumite, where he must fight for his life against some of the deadliest martial artists in the world.

The film was shot on location in Hong Kong and Los Angeles. It was released to positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing over $65 million worldwide.
Van Damme's performance in Bloodsport helped to launch his career as a martial arts action star. He would go on to star in other successful films such as Kickboxer (1989), Lionheart (1990), Universal Soldier (1992) and Timecop (1994). Bloodsport is considered to be one of Van Damme's best films and has garnered a cult following over the years.

Discussion topics include: Are all secret worlds in martial arts movies connected? Sexy fight training montages with Punch Dad, One True Art as created by white American individualist dominance narratives, One True Can of Beer held by Ray the entire movie, Being the pink Power Ranger, Frank Dux's astrological chemistry with Chong Li, What is truth?

Because every 10th episode of this very podcast will be dedicated to ‘the muscles from Brussels’, so just get on board. This movie is an interesting one, and goes by many names - Lionheart, Wrong Bet, AWOL, Full Contact, Lyon - but can you call it a classic? This next chapter in our ongoing JCVD saga explores the star’s more serious acting aspirations, his tendency toward bromantic themes, and we explore his place within the broader latpack ecosystem.
