    Ep. - 538 - REVENGE: A STORY OF HOPE

    Ep. - 538 - REVENGE: A STORY OF HOPE

Kate discusses what to watch this weekend including The Come Up (Freeform) and Love is Blind 2: After the Altar.

Kate tells the incredible story behind Laura Blumenfeld New York Times bestselling book Revenge: A Story of Hope. Laura's father was shot in Jerusalem in 1986 by a member of a rebel faction of the PLO responsible for attacks on several tourists. Her father survived, but Blumenfeld's desire for revenge haunted her. While plotting to infiltrate her father's shooter's life, Blumenfeld travels the globe gathering stories of other avengers. In a surprising twist, she gets revenge, but not according to traditional expectations. She discovers a third way, a choice beyond "turn the other cheek" or "an eye for an eye." And with it she answers the age-old question: what is the best revenge? It is also the subject of a Primetime special with Diane Sawyer, available on YouTube.

Episode 18: KFJC fm, Bryan Chandler with Sol Mogerman December 17th, 2020
Sol Mogerman was named Stuart Louis Mogerman at birth in 1945 after his father’s father, Solomon Louis Mogerman, to keep the angel of death from confusing him with his then living grandfather. He grew up known as Stuart or Stu Mogerman in Berkeley, California and survived long enough to safely outlive his grandfather and claim his true name as “Solomon”. When he moved to Canada 20 years ago people began to call him Sol. This made sense to him as he was born on the Summer Solstice.

Sol has survived an acquired brain injury (stroke) from a car accident in 1985 to become a clinical counsellor (specializing in restoration of self-image after brain injury and trauma), author, teacher, cartoonist and musician. He is married to the artist Gundula Mogerman, father of four sons, and lives in Victoria, British Columbia where he plays music, writes, teaches and practices counseling.

KFJC fm, Bryan Chandler Interview with Harvey Gold August 27th, 2020

KFJC fm, Bryan Chandler Interview with Harvey Gold August 27th, 2020
Harvey Gold, born in Akron, Ohio, USA, is an American guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, a founder of the avant-rock/new wave band Tin Huey. Describing the musical output of the eclectic Harvey Gold, a founding father of Tin Huey and Half Cleveland, Gold has offered, “We are what we eat and we’ve eaten a lot of different stuff.”

Careening from power pop, to electronic, to “West Akron Appalachian,” this solo album includes an emotional protest/love song in “The Fence,” a sizzling rocker with horns, “In Consideration of Joe Strummer,” a dark take on The Beatles’ “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” AND a nod to Vivian Stanshall with a Music Hall style tune about a hard-boiled egg, “Song For Joanne.” It’s even been suggested that the track, “March of the Elephants,” might be Gold’s instrumental sequel to his Huey’s opus, “Chinese Circus.”

So, he’d like to think he says it all in the title, “It’s Messy Vol. 1.”

096: Travis Van Winkle — An Ascending Loop of Frustration and Mastery

096: Travis Van Winkle — An Ascending Loop of Frustration and Mastery

Today’s guest entered his on-camera career after being eliminated from the first round of a reality TV show. Little did he know how one small connection from this otherwise absurd and hilarious experience would open the door to a creative career that would force him to examine his humanity and the world around him. Travis Van Winkle made it to LA with a few hundred bucks in his pocket and the belief that somehow, he would find a career telling stories on camera. He’s done just that and more, having appeared in films like Transformers, Friday the 13th, Meet the Spartans, and an even longer list of television roles.

We chat about how his capacity for gratitude has expanded since the beginning days of his career, how a life in this business has encouraged deep personal reflection and growth, and how the jobs he’s lost have paved the way to even bigger, better, and more expansive opportunities---like going back to school AFTER his series regular role in THE LAST SHIP.

    Episode 85: It's Treason Then

This week, the Scoundrels continue their discussion of the Star Wars novels with their review of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn: Treason in episode 85: "It's Treason Then."  Before they get to that, they discuss the opening of In-Sync Exotics Millennium Falcon pool.

Star Wars News - The Final Season of Resistance

After some introductory comments, the Scoundrels turn to the news. This week's topics include:

    • A Disney+ bundle arriving in November,

It's Treason Then - A Review of Zahn's Thrawn: Treason

    • Whether Thrawn is a hero or villain.

    Social Media, Email, and More

Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels is a bi-weekly show that features three first-generation Star Wars fans. Each episode, RetroZappers Dennis Keithly, Jay Krebs, and Darth Taxus offer their thoughts and reactions on Star Wars news. Then, they engage in Star Wars discussion in the "Hyperthetical" segment. Top ten lists, book reviews, Resistance and television discussion, and interviews are all on the table. After the Hyperthetical, each episode features listener feedback with Silence Fools!

The Scoundrels on Twitter: Dennis Keithly can be followed @DJKver2, Darth Taxus is @DarthTaxus, and Jay Krebs is @JoyceKrebs.

SCubedPod thrives on listener feedback. Therefore, Dennis, Taxus, and Jay would love to read your email on the show. To reach them, email the show at SCubedPod@RetroZap.com. For instance, have an opinion on Star Wars comics, Rebels, or the novels? We want to hear it. Also, have a question about some Star Wars detail? Send it to us! It doesn't have to be Star Wars to make it on our show.

Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels T-Shirts can be purchased here.

Finally, Dennis, Taxus, and Jay would appreciate an iTunes review for the show. Thank you.

083: Ian Verdun — Taking Responsibility for Your Talent

083: Ian Verdun — Taking Responsibility for Your Talent

Today we are chatting with Ian Verdun, an actor and playwright, seen most recently on Freeform’s hit show SIREN. Ian was born and raised right here in Los Angeles, and graduated from Cal Arts where he studied acting, and also used much his time away from the stage writing his own plays. Today, he candidly shares his journey, from struggling to pay for school, to grinding in New York with multiple side jobs, all the way to booking his big break on SIREN.

He generously shares his insight on the expanding diversity dialogue within the industry, how things have changed since he was stuck playing bit parts throughout school, and how, as a storyteller, he feels characters can and should be depicted by artists from every background.

Verdun's past performances have been described as "brimming with grit and honesty" by Backstage, "quirkily charming" by Variety, and "finely nuanced" by LA Weekly. He has also been hailed by Stage Scene LA as the "brightest stage discovery of 2011".
Ian continues to cut his teeth on the stages of New York and Los Angeles, along with writing and producing several plays himself. After appearing on ABC's Last Resort, TNT's Hawthorne and FOX's Lucifer, Ian threw his energy into his own television creation, Life's A Drag. Following years of experiencing the lackluster opportunities for diverse entertainers, Life's A Drag went on to win a number of awards in the burgeoning web festival circuit, including a special award for recognition in diversity.
