Episode 103: Turning Wood into Wonder with Brad Bond

Episode 103: Turning Wood into Wonder with Brad Bond

When Brad from Q Branch Woodwork spins a piece of wood into a masterpiece, it's not just a craft; it's an act of transformation. Today's conversation takes us through the whirl of woodturning, where danger and beauty dance together on the lathe, revealing how Brad's signature creations have become a heartbeat for the Fremont community. Discover the nuances of working with wood at high speeds, the well-oiled dance between maker and machine, and the anticipation of larger projects with Brad's upcoming lathe upgrade, a promise of grander artistry on the horizon.

Navigating a path from idle pandemic hobbyist to a thriving online business, Brad's story is a testament to the power of passion and persistence. His journey, much like the art of podcasting, highlights the significance of presentation and the meticulous attention to detail—whether it's in shaping stunning wood bowls or crafting conversations that captivate your mind. Join us as we explore the shared dedication that goes into creating things of beauty and value, be it through the microphone or the hands of a skilled wood artisan.

In this episode, we celebrate the intersection of handcrafted goods and the community that embraces them. We step into the challenges of standing out in a marketplace like Etsy, where quality and design become the lifeblood of a woodturner's craft. But it's not just about the products; it's about a dream to weave this art into the fabric of Fremont, to open a storefront in Niles that's more than a shop, and perhaps one day, transitioning from passion to full-time pursuit. Witness the journey, the craft, and the community in an episode that's all about the beauty of wood and the hands that shape it.

Episode 88: Exploring the Transformation of Fremont: A Retrospect with Bob Tavares

What if you could step back in time and witness the transformation of a quaint little town into a bustling city? That's exactly what we're doing today with my guest, lifetime Fremont resident and real estate veteran, Bob Tavares. He's sharing his firsthand account of the growth of Mission San Jose, taking us from an era of cauliflower fields and affordable homes to the modern cityscape.

But it's not all frills and fun, we also confront the complexities of homelessness, the surge of high-rise buildings and the pressure of housing provision in the face of an escalating population. We even take a trip down memory lane, reliving the joyful spectacle of the Bicentennial at the Mission and the community parade that ensued.

As we wrap up, we ponder the future of Mission San Jose, the potential for modernization amid the preservation of its historic structures, and the opportunities budding entrepreneurs could tap into. Bob advocates for the significance of community pride and the importance of listening to the voices of long-standing investors in the locale. Our shared passion for nurturing the unique ambiance of Mission San Jose shines through, as we celebrate the small-town charm that gives Fremont its distinct allure. Listen in and experience the power of community stories; they might just inspire you to share yours.

    A Change of Plans

    A Change of Plans

God's ways are not always our ways. What happens when God changes your direction?

Even the Apostle Paul experienced this. We find it in Acts 16. We see great results when a child of God allows Him to change their plans.

    Acts 16:6-9
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, [7] After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. [8] And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. [9] And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

    Hunger Pains

    Hunger Pains

What do you do when you are hungry? How about when you are thirsty? Don't we naturally find something to eat and drink?

What happens when we hunger and thirst after righteousness?  The Lord Jesus gives us an answer and we find an example in the Psalms of David.

    Matthew 5:6
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

    Psalm 42:1-2
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. [2] My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

    Empty Excitement

    Empty Excitement

Sometimes people get excited over nothing. That happens in the spiritual real as well. People get excited over their anticipation of achieving heaven through their righteous works when in fact that hope is hollow. That is why the Apostle Paul described those closest to him as having a zeal that was without knowledge.

Join Gary as he explores this passage from Romans 10 and explains how we can have a hope that is certain.

    Romans 10:1-4
Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. [2] For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. [3] For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. [4] For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

    God is For Me

    God is For Me

We all have those days when we feel like the world is closing in on us and everyone is against us. Sometimes its more thana feeling and it is a fact. It doesn't matter when you know that God is for you.  Psalm 56:9 reminds us of this. But take a look at that entire chapter. It is filled with encouragement and direction when the world offers discouragement and depression.

    Psalm 56:1-13
Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. [2] Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. [3] What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. [4] In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. [5] Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil. [6] They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul. [7] Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God. [8] Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? [9] When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. [10] In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word. [11] In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. [12] Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee. [13] For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
