Are The Vikings Legit? Nas' King's Disease III Review, Lecrae's Church Clothes 4 and Fruitvale Station Review

In this episode, Wellington and Savon discussed the Bills-Vikings thriller and the critical Josh Allen turnovers. They also discuss the 49ers’ home win over the Chargers, the Packers’ comeback OT win over the Cowboys and Tampa Bay looking more like themselves; in some aspects. Next, they discussed LSU’s close win over Arkansas on the road and TCU’s important victory over Texas. Then they discuss their initial thoughts on the college basketball season starting and Kentucky beating Michigan St. for double OT and Kansas’ win against Duke and them keeping their active winning streak alive; along with analysis on the Nuggets’ strong start to the season. Finally, they review Nas’ King’s Disease III phenomenal new album, Cormega’s The Realness II, Lecrae’s Church Clothes 4 and Coco Jones’ EP What I Didn’t Tell You along with Secily’s new single  “Battlefield”.

In the second half, they review Fruitvale Station, the 2013 biographical drama film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer and Melonie Diaz, they start off by discussing this film being passionate and powerfully acted; along with being a celebration of life and a condemnation of death. They also discuss this being a great film and emotional one that stuck to a single core concept and it being an important reminder of the shortcomings that still take place in our society. Finally, they discuss the chemistry between Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler along with this being one of MBJ’s best performances ever.

Thief's Monthly Movie Loot 34: The March Loot

In Episode 34, I focus on five great films as my main loot: Ran, Dogtooth, Nomadland, Fantastic Planet, and The Whisperers. Aside from that, I still dive briefly into a bunch of other films I saw: from the streets of San Francisco to rural Ohio, from Latin America to the imaginary Kumaandra, from the birth of the Internet to behind the Internet. Check it out!

Justice Somewhere: Local Lament and Joyful Protest in New Haven, CT / Josh Williams & Matthew Croasmun

Justice Somewhere: Local Lament and Joyful Protest in New Haven, CT / Josh Williams & Matthew Croasmun

Matthew Croasmun interviews Pastor Josh Williams (Elm City Vineyard, New Haven, CT) about being a black pastor of a multi-ethnic church in New Haven. In this conversation, Williams provides a window into the incarnational theology that truly makes a difference in the world; he reflects on how increased attention to police involved violence against black life has impacted his life and vocation; he focuses on lament as the first step toward action and justice, but talks about joy and spiritual discipline in the act of protest, and finally, reflects on the fundamentally challenging question everyone is wrestling with right now: What does it mean to love our whole city?

Episode 14 - Production Designer Hannah Beachler

Episode 14 - Production Designer Hannah Beachler

If you didn’t know, every lamp, curtain, wall color, car, and fixture is selected by the production designer and team. It can be as small as finding the right rural home in the case of Dark Waters, or building a fictional country and every single element within it in films like Black Panther. Every visual in this exercise was created by production designer Hannah Beachler.

Beachler has been building worlds like this for over a decade with movies like Creed, Moonlight, Black Panther, Beyonce’s Lemonade, and her latest film Dark Waters to her credit.  Now to get an understanding the anatomy of her process and design principles I had a conversation with Hannah via Skype for this informative masterclass about her creative process and inspirations.

    300: Hannah Beachler

    300: Hannah Beachler

Fruitvale Station. Miles Ahead. Creed. Moonlight. If you've seen any of these films over the past few years, then you're familiar with the work of Hannah Beachler. You may also know her for her Afrofuturist design direction on Black Panther, becoming not just the first Black person to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design, but also being the first one to win it as well. She's even worked with Beyoncé on Lemonade, as well as the On The Run II tour with Beyoncé and Jay Z! In short, Hannah Beachler is definitely #goals when it comes to Black design.

While we did discuss Hannah's career highlights, we also talked about her life growing up in Ohio, her early work in production design, and how she first met Ryan Coogler. Hannah also shared how she prepares for working on films, what life is like after winning an Oscar, and how she stays inspired. Hannah is definitely proof that if you do your best, it is definitely good enough!
