A Superficial Look On The Future of Islam with Eric Brazau

A Superficial Look On The Future of Islam with Eric Brazau

Can a reformed Islamophobe be redeemed and can a non-Muslim speak about the complex relationship between progressive and orthodox Islam with any creditability? Eric Brazau's look at Islam began in an unexpected place - while he was incarcerated. His enlightening perspectives and observations are shared in his book, 'Muslim Reformers versus Fundamentalists.' This provocative work tackles the pressing question of how Islam is interacting with, and shaping, Western civilization. Eric's book further raises inquiries on which form of Islam - the reformist or fundamentalist - will ultimately gain prominence. But beyond pointing out the differences he offers no solutions or why we should really care.

We challenge Eric on his complaints about laws to prevent Islamophobia, the same kind that landed him in jail years ago. Personal harassment of religious people is just wrong. Get ready for an information-loaded session that fails to offer fresh perspectives on Islam and lightly touches on the western concern about radical Islam which is really no different than concern about Christian Nationalism here in the US.

Episode 83: Christian Fundamentalist Amusement Parks; Albert Broel, Frog Magnate

Episode 83: Christian Fundamentalist Amusement Parks; Albert Broel, Frog Magnate

Florida’s state government isn’t the only bunch to get a bug up its collective ass over Disney not being fundamentalist enough: Turns out there’s a storied history of Old Testament fanboys opening entire theme parks, except instead of a theme there’s the Bible, and instead of a park there’s the Bible. Today we learn more about this string of inexplicable failures, plus one man’s equally successful plan to boost Americans’ frog intake by several hundredfold. Albert Broel is the author of “Frog Raising for Pleasure and Profit,” and believe us when we tell you that’s not even the best part of Albert Brull. All this, plus Doug! Our friend Doug is here, and we love him. Also there's a lot of singing, and most of it's pretty great. Doug! Songs! Frogs! Fundamentalists! It’s all here!

Episode 79: The Blackburn Cult and Explo '72!

Episode 79: The Blackburn Cult and Explo '72!

SPRING BREEEEEAK!!!! Today we're taking a break from not talking about cults, so as to learn more about the Blackburn Cult, the proper name of which is the Divine Order of the Royal Arms of the Great Eleven, a name perhaps designed to remind people that while the Great Depression might be raging, you can still use as many words and letters as you want when naming your Jesus-adjacent child-resurrection grift. Then it's time for a ROAD TRIIIIIIP!!! To a blank spot by I-35, just north of Dallas, in June, for an outdoor Jesus music festival in weather more like Actual Hell than anyone seems willing to discuss! Explo '72 was the fundamentalist Woodstock that people had, I guess, been waiting for? Which people, and since when, are questions I definitely don't care about. Join us, won't you? SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS!

53 - Bill Gothard's Fundie Cult: Only God Can Judge Me Now

53 - Bill Gothard's Fundie Cult: Only God Can Judge Me Now

Bill Gothard created the Advanced Training Institute and the Institute of Basic Life Principles, abusive ministries that shaped the framework of most homeschool curriculum in the 80s & 90s. Through his position, Gothard was able to put in place a system of abusive practices throughout the homes of many of his followers, which helped lay the groundwork for sexual, mental, and physical abuse of women, girls, and young people in particular. An incredible amount of young women and men who worked closely with Gothard have accused him of sexual and emotional abuse, and after taking a closer look at him and his life, we have no reason to doubt their credibility. Join us as we discuss the man, the cult, and the survivors of Bill Gothard and his ministry.

Fundamentalists, Heretics, and Audacious Threshhold Dwellers

Fundamentalists, Heretics, and Audacious Threshhold Dwellers
The two opposing narratives that the dominant media outlets have presented to us are, at their core, fundamentally similar in spite of their oppositions. What we are witnessing is not so much a clash of civilizations, but a clash of fundamentalisms. In spite of the hoopla and euphoria of global village, what we are witnessing are walls rising, hearts constricting, and social imagination shrinking. We cannot afford to remain silent in the face of the clash of fundamentalisms and the deathgiving unraveling. Instead, we must offer a different narrative and become active threshold dwellers to help usher the birth of a new and better tomorrow. A lecture at Plymouth United Church of Christ, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on July 22, 2012. Prof. Fernandez is professor of Constructive Theology at United Theological Seminary in the Twin Cities, Minnesota.
