    Ep. 218: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s pt.2

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard rockin’ 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Naked Sun – “Psycho-Activate” from Naked Sun (1991)
    2. Funhouse – “Y.R.S.” from Generation Generator (1990)
    3. No Walls – “Naive” from No Wall (1992)
    4. Animal Bag – “Missing Out” from Animal Bag (1992)
    5. Red Sea – “Blood” from Blood (1994)
    6. The Hatters – “Sacrifice” from The Madcap Adventures Of The Avocado Overlord (1994)
    7. Loudhouse – “Faith Farm” from For Crying Out Loud (1991)

    Haunty Jaunts

Season 2, Episode 27:  Just in time for Halloween, we have three little tales to get you in the mood:  "The Cookie Man," about a scary urban myth heard in our small town NJ  neighborhood; "The Pelican Club," a story of misguided  adventure, exploring an abandoned building that once housed a night club; and finally, "The Haunted Tunnel of Morris County," offering a brief historical account of numerous explosions at a NJ gunpowder and bomb factory over the course of 69 years.  Names have been changed to protect the innocent.  In this podcast series, Tom Nielson tells stories, shares memories, and concocts whimsical, light-hearted tales inspired by his own life experiences, channeling the styles of Jean Shepherd, Garrison Keillor, Mark Twain, Jerry Seinfeld, and other famous storytellers.

Funhouse (w/ Mike, Tommy & Chad)

Funhouse (w/ Mike, Tommy & Chad)

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House, Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ, and Tommy Coombs the Pop Daddy here to talk about the Christmas episodes of the 1988 syndicated game show “Funhouse!” Hosted by JD Roth, two teams competed in Christmas themed stunts for the opportunity to run through the Funhouse to win ultimate prizes!

The season 1 episode sees the red team face the gold team by making snowman, hanging ornaments, and stuffing presents in Santa’s bag. In the Grand Prix race, they alternate pushing Santa’s sleigh. The red team, having defeated the gold, run through the Funhouse and earn a bevy of prizes!

In the 1989 season 2 Christmas episode, the stunts were even wackier! The boys tossed reindeer noses to the girls to put on audience members! They spun a giant dreidel for candy and even matched ornament halves “I Love Lucy”-style! The Grand Prix had each team deliver presents to children of the world as Santa and Mrs. Claus! The red team emerged victorious and ran through the Funhouse for some great gifts and cash!

Schmutz? Check. Zany stunts? Uh huh. World’s worst Santa beard? Looking at you, JD! So grab your British Knights, collect the blue and white tokens, and try to win with this episode on Funhouse Christmas!

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with Kristopher Woofter & Will Dodson (Fixed Audio)

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with Kristopher Woofter & Will Dodson (Fixed Audio)
Will Dodson and Kristopher Woofter, co-editors of American Twilight: The Cinema of Tobe Hooper join me to talk about Texas, chainsaws, massacres and the career of TCM director Tobe Hooper. The far-reaching conversation touches on politics, film techniques, history and the disputed authorship of the Hooper directed/Steven Spielberg produced blockbuster Poltergeist. Learn more about their excellent book at its University of Texas Press page (https://utpress.utexas.edu/books/woofter-dodson-american-twilight) and check out Woofter's horror research hub The Hauntologist (https://www.thehauntologist.com/). The original TCM is streaming on Shudder here (https://www.shudder.com/movies/watch/the-texas-chain-saw-massacre/425866499d2b1164). The Tobe Hooper-directed Peter, Paul & Mary Doc is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDa2718k15o). Hooper's early short film The Heisters is here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3qpHOwAb2I) I believe that this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmyaT8OSXh4) is the Hooper/Funhouse interview Kris mentioned. Evidentally Hooper's name is pronounced "Toby" and I look like a total idiot in front of these two eminent horror movie scholars.

    Safari in Suburbia

    Safari in Suburbia

What happens when two young kids brave the jungle of a large, weed-infested vacant lot in New Jersey? Adventures aplenty abound, including a scary visit to an unfinished home under construction. Tom Nielson tells stories, shares memories, and concocts whimsical tales inspired by his travels and life adventures, reminiscent of the style of the late Jean Shepherd of WOR-Radio in New York.
